Yeow, that funkin' hurts! I got a visit from the bad tooth fairy.
I have been lax about preventative care, and always knew a cantankerous tooth was on the horizon. My excuse is caregiving and then not having dental coverage. So of course the flare up occurs on a weekend followed by a holiday.
Must tame the Savage.
I don't care what it cost.
Ah, that's better.
No more procrastinating about the dentist.
2018 Blog Roundup. Have a great weekend! The thread is OPEN.

Good morning, Tim ~~~
Dental issues rarely raise their head on normal working days. I know this because I had a problem once on the Saturday of the Labor Day weekend, many moons ago. Glad you got it taken care of. Teeth are important even though going to the dentist can be frightening. I was an early dentist-detester, as I had too many negative dentist encounters growing up. However, today, I realize the need for keeping my own teeth, so I suck it up twice a year. I am an advocate for preventative dentistry!
Spending my last vacation day with some girlfriends. We will be looking into our crystal balls for insight into 2019. I'll let you all know if we uncover anything worth noting. If I fail to mention anything as the months pass, apologies in advance for not wanting to spoil any surprises!
Have a beautiful day and weekend, folks!

buzzword BINGO.
Before caregiving and when I had dental coverage, I did preventative maintenance four times a year. Then I got busy, and no coverage. I can not conceive a rationale for having my teeth and eyes in a separate healthcare paradigm. Sorry about your dental problem
Readers in their "early" adult years should pay attention to this. I made the effort to fix my mouth back in the late 80's early 90's. With no dental insurance coverage I invested around $10K in my mouth with a good dentist over 6 or 7 years. As a child I received regular dental care with coverage from my parents dental insurance. I had a mouthful of amalgam fillings that had begun to break down as I reached my early 30's. I had all of them replaced with gold inlays or crowns. Now 30 years later I still have all my teeth and enjoy good dental health. A buddy of mine who failed to get dental care has recently completed a 2.5 year $50K journey through dental hell. Now after all that pain and cash he has a mouthful of implants. He had to have all his teeth removed. Then bone grafts in his jaw to rebuild the foundation for posts to get dental implants. He is lucky to have enough income to pay for this and a job that allows for unlimited time off. However enduring oral surgery once every six weeks for around two years was NO FUN!
It doesn't take much
The dentist office had a boogie man film loop about all the things that can go wrong with your teeth. I had some gap years during my twenties and now again because neither COBRA, nor Medicare (possible with supplemental plan) cover dental. This time, I was off the cleaning and check up schedule for ~4 years.
I went home with prescriptions and an appointment for extraction. I am looking at a couple of implants, on my nickel. Luckily, the prescriptions are "medical". When I was at the pharmacy, I was still thinking dental and figuring on $50+. When the cashier said $4.80, it was the best I felt in days.

BANKS ARE MADE OF MARBLE
I've traveled round this country From shore to shining shore. It really made me wonder The things I heard and saw.
I saw the weary farmer, Plowing sod and loam; I heard the auction hammer A knocking down his home.
CHORUS: But the banks are made of marble, With a guard at every door, And the vaults are stuffed with silver, That the farmer sweated for.
I saw the seaman standing Idly by the shore. I heard the bosses saying, Got no work for you no more.
But the banks are made of marble, With a guard at every door, And the vaults are stuffed with silver, That the seaman sweated for.
I saw the weary miner, Scrubbing coal dust from his back, I heard his children cryin', Got no coal to heat the shack.
But the banks are made of marble, With a guard at every door, And the vaults are stuffed with silver, That the miner sweated for.
I've seen my brothers working Throughout this mighty land; I prayed we'd get together, And together make a stand.
FINAL CHORUS: Then we'd own those banks of marble, With a guard at every door; And we'd share those vaults of silver, That we have sweated for.

Remember when a congressman was censured...
for wearing a hoodie in congress? Well, we don't care about that any more.
RELIGIOUS headgear is allowed.
I can't wait till our elected body looks like a cult meeting. You'll have the turbans, the yarmulkes, the wimples and maybe a nice big pope hat for the speaker. Nancy would sure like that.
Here's my problem. Now you're making exceptions for ONE religion. No other religion DEMANDS their people wear a badge of their faith openly, (Unless you count the American flag pin). So, in actuality, this is a changing of the rules of the way the government works for ONE religion. Because let's be honest. If Islam gets to be visible in the halls of congress, every fucking other faith is going to start demanding that they be visible in the halls of congress.
So, goodbye separation of church and state. THAT's My fucking problem with the Hijab in congress.

Wouldn't THAT be great to see in the Houses of Congress!
That's hilarious
I'm pretty sure they get a lot of double takes when someone looks at their ID. I know I would.
As far as congress wearing colanders on their heads...I think it'd be a whimsical look they don't deserve. More appropriate would be a chamber pot with logos from the various corporations that pay them.

be more widely used. If we could get a pastafarian elected, they could wear a colander, but that's a long shot.
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Good morning, detroit. I see it as the opposite. A lot of
religions and religious sects wear headgear. Permitting them to wear it permits them to participate. What, after all, is the point of a ho hats rule anyway? Originally, to keep out the Jews and discourage women, who, back in the day, also generally went about covered. They never had a rule outlawing jewelry, pins or other adornment because crucifixes. I was at a venue abroad when I was accosted at the door by a toady who said "no hats are allowed inside" and I replied "to keep out the Jews?" and his expression changed in a way that clearly said "Yes but we don't openly admit that".
Separation of church and state is a phantom we don't have and never have had. They open each session with a fucking prayer, so that buries any pretense of that right away. It's not just Muslims and Jews, Mennonites, Amish, Some Hindus, Sikhs, some extreme Catholics, etc. This rule, regardless of its specific motivation is a good thing, tearing down a christianist religio-fascist attempt at the exclusion of "others" as best they could without naming them.
Have a good one.
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
I strongly disagree with you.
I will NEVER support open worship in the halls of office. I was against it when they pushed the ten commandments, and I grit my teeth every time a politician invokes their god. Or spouts "God Bless America".
If that means that I'm implicity supporting the oppressor, then Fine, EVERYBODY gets to wear whatever they want. But none of this bullshit religious exceptions. You wanna worship, go to fucking church. You want to tell me how to run my life and what laws will govern me, you do NOT get to proclaim that you are superior and fucking empowered because you're hanging up a sign that says "I'm THIS Religion, Fight me."
Either there is a rule or their isn't. If the is a rule, making MORE privileged assholes immune to the rule isn't progress, it's adding more tokens to the "Big Tent".
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
There shouldn't be rules about dress, period. I agree. But,
if they insist on having them, then they should not be a thinly disguised barrier designed to prohibit persons of non-mainstream christian religions from holding office. That, however, is how they have been used and why they were put in place in the first place. I too oppose opening with a prayer, but there it is, the pretense is gone. This has never been a secular country regardless of the propaganda to that effect. The number of laws we have and have had that have their origins in Christian bullshit is enormous. They should all be eliminated. I'm not arguing against a purely secular government, I support it, but the fact is that it is a myth. I am actually writing an OT on that topic right now.
Meanwhile, a Jewish male wearing a yarmulke is no more worshipping by doing so than some Christian wearing a crucifix, Saint Anthony's medal or Opus Dei pin (which some supreme court justices have been known to wear on the bench.) Actually, less so, because, afaik, nothing in the scriptures, afaik, requires crucifixes to be worn, and certainly not opus dei pins and Saint Anthony medals, but Hebrew scripture, for many Jews, absolutely requires the beanie every day. Congress should not be allowed to outlaw membership to such persons, if their electorate elects them, they should be allowed to sit and participate.

Good morning, Tim. Sorry about the tooth issues and the
pain. Looks like you got is resolved. "They say" that implants are really good, if you have to lose a tooth in the first place, so, except for the cost, if you can get them, that's a good thing.
I'm off to see the endodontist later today in spite of regular, good home-care and twice yearly dentist visits. Right before the holidays I started experiencing major, unidentifiable, intermittent tooth pain. So I went to the dentist on like the 28th and he could find nothing and, of course, it was quiescent at that time. So off I go again today to see if we can find and fix something that comes and goes, so I don't expect much success but hope I'm lucky. The good thing is that it is in Berkeley, like my dentist, so whatever happens I can hit some awesome bakeries and wine shops and stuff, maybe even a dispensary.
Have a great one.

I always find it hilarious the pearl clutching that ensues. I mean, we all know who the motherfucker is, but seriously, are they going to impeach him or just... tell me they're going to do it. Because they've been doing the latter a LOT...

Sure, Pain is
what the world(Living) inflicts on us, LIFE is dealing with that Pain(Reality). To choose Joy in the face of suffering? A sad sort of Happiness, maybe. But Joy? That's a stretch. Having FUN in the Moment is a different kettle o' fish!
To wit; Like you(and many others), I avoid the dentist. In my late teens my wisdom teeth came in Straight! However, they made all the rest Crooked. Decades pass and now one of my molars starts to bother me and I'm Not interested in saving it. A Hippy Dentist numbs me up(what Else is New?) and proceeds to extract it. When it lets Go, I start laughing! It made such a Pop in my skull and a Flash of Pain in my head That I Had NEVER Felt Before in five decades of living(and I've felt a LOT of Pain) I couldn't help it, I Had to Laugh. That the pain was followed by Immediate relief helped, I'm sure.
The Doc thought I was crazy, said that was the first time he'd ever pulled a tooth and had somebody laugh over it. Where am I going with this? Fuck if I know!

Good morning, TBU. Sounds like your hippy dentist wasn't
quite hippy enough. I was in my forties or fifties for my first extraction. My dentist sent me to a guy who specializes in them. I was put in a warmed, vibrating, dental chair, and fed Nitrous Oxide while he fired up some Grateful Dead through the Koss headphones he had put on me. I do think that I noticed the tooth become absent right through the grooving, but meh, it was all part of the groove and waaay cool.
