Open Thread: All Saints Day

Our diversity enhances us, our love guides us, our convictions strengthen us. -- seen in an old cemetery in Charleston

Good Morning C99%'ers,

Happy All Saints Day!
Today we remember those passed (god knows saints aren't alive) by going to the headstones and passing a blessing to the dearly departed. All Hallows Eve (Halloween) was invented to have the kids scare the spirits out of the grave yards the night before the old folks would come to sanctify the dead relatives on "All saints Day" in the mourning. Somehow, the kids got treats for their tricks. The candy man made a fortune.

Just spoke with a fellow political effective. Asked her to have a look at the C99% sight. Said a lot of intelligent people share opinions with tolerance and support. It's a place to try and digest reality without denying the ugly truth. Not always positive, sometimes uplifting, mostly educational and open. Thread.

A topic to get some cerebral sensorial stimulation started. Vroom-vroom.

Anarchy is the condition of a society, entity, group of people, or a single person that rejects hierarchy.[1] The term originally meant leaderlessness, but in 1840, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon adopted the term in his treatise What Is Property? to refer to a new political philosophy, anarchism, which advocates stateless societies based on voluntary associations. In practical terms, anarchy can refer to the curtailment or abolition of traditional forms of government.

Like maybe forming local co-ops.

Well, if voting doesn't get us there, what about anarchy (aside from it being hard to organize)? We've seen the results of progress in the Dakotas, Snowden, OWS, Assange, BLM, Wikileaks, St. Louis and multiple cities where authority has been called to task. People are resisting oppression.

Anarchy is not always organized or publicized, the picture is clear to us. Signing a petition doesn't change much. Creative anarchy is hands-on. Just comes up with values expressed. The media won't show it (but we know it).

BTW Photo your ballot if you can. It's probably the only proof we'll have that votes are counted.

Believe in the philosophy of liberty. The floor is yours...

about what's happening in our world, the oligarchy, the Syrian pipeline war, the NATO troops in Eastern Europe, her criminal heinous, etc., I get told these are CT and crawl back under your rock.

I am aghast at the head-in-the-sand ignorance of the American people. It is easier to just go on with your life and hope none of the above touches/affects you in any manner. "It's not really happening!" Life in America is all peaches and creme.

A co-worker said to me yesterday, "this is like reality teevee." To which I responded, "we are living in a reality teevee show where the consequences will negatively affect us 'for real' after next Tuesday!"

I'm living in an alternate universe, but it's a real one.

Have a beautiful day! Pleasantry

from the world outside their doors. People think that they can wish away the facts of our political/economic environment and they can't: They can only pretend it's not so until the hammer comes down on them and they find there's no help forthcoming. They will become the people they are now mocking.

Emma answered it very succinctly:

the liberation of the human mind from the dominion of religion; the liberation of the human body from the dominion of property; liberation from the shackles and restraint of government.

When the CNT/FAI fighters succeeded in turning back the Fascists in Catalonia and comunismo libertario broke out, Orwell wrote:

But it (the revolution) lasted long enough to have its effect upon anyone who experienced it. However much one cursed at the time, one realized afterwards that one had been in contact with something strange and valuable. One had been in a community where hope was more normal than apathy or cynicism, where the word "comrade" stood for comradeship and not, as in most countries, for humbug. One had breathed the air of equality.

Homage to Catalonia, George Orwell

How I would love to smell that air of equality some day.

Thanks, QMS, for this Open Thread and topic.

Anarchy would be preferable. And we still have another week of it.

The Jive Aces covering the crap out of the old Louis Prima tune "Bring Me Sunshine".

I play this tune with a horn-driven blues band (uke and all!), and it never ceases to bring out smiles and dancers.

I need some smiles, and this week in particular I think we could all use some... Mmmm BOP!

AL HOCEIMA―Thousands of Moroccans Sunday attended the funeral of a fishmonger whose gruesome death in a rubbish truck crusher has caused outrage across the North African country, with authorities vowing to punish those responsible.

Mouhcine Fikri, 31, was crushed to death on Friday in the truck in the northern city of Al-Hoceima as he reportedly tried to protest against a municipal worker seizing and destroying his wares.

An image of his inert body―head and arm sticking out from under the lorry’s crushing mechanism―went viral on social media, sparking calls for protests nationwide including in the capital Rabat.

Footage online showed thousands of people following the yellow ambulance that carried Fikri’s body through Al-Hoceima in the ethnically Berber Rif region on Sunday.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/protests-erupt-morocco-fishmonger-crushed-dea...

Protests were held in Al-Hoceima and other towns in Rif region, long seen as a hotbed of dissent, and also in Casablanca and the capital Rabat, where hundreds gathered chanting "Mohcine was murdered, Makhzen is to blame" in a reference to the royal establishment and its allies.

Fikri's death has echoes of how Tunisia's uprising began in 2011, triggering similar revolts across the region after a young man set himself on fire in desperation because police confiscated fruit and vegetables he was selling.

Activists accused police officers of ordering garbage men to crush Fikri, but the Moroccan police (DGSN) denied those accusations in a statement on Sunday.

Love the OT this am....

Nobody wants to hear anything. My personal FB page is a trip. Pictures of babies, food, and selfies every inch. Mention politics and everyone crawls under a rock. Heaven help them if they actually learn something. The difference I do notice is the conservatives in my feed. They speak out. Prayers and flags everywhere.

With your help it's working. Seems the propaganda machine has achieved it's goal of turning off minds. Almost everyone I speak with are sick of this dog and pony show. The "aware ones" are not fooled though. This is an opportunity to shake things up. Now I'm wondering what to put up for next Tuesday. Oy

Is it possible to host a live thread? Or will there be zero results until evening. Early poll results maybe? Or record of election fraud complaints as they arise?

Not quite sure how that would work. Maybe someone could pick it up in the PM. Will give it a shot. Maybe do a small exit polling of our own? Like: "I voted at (place, time) for xyz. Lines are long, monitors in attendance, demonstrations in evidence, etc. Get a live running pulse of the process as it happens. Quien sabe? Might generate some valuable insights.
Cheers!

first time in US history, both black and white trade unionists teamed up together to stage a 4 day general strike. Alternatively, you could devote the day to anti-war songs in preparation for the years to come.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

Halloween was a needed small taste of normality and creativity on my street. The children came to the door in small bands, so sweet. The scary monsters and goblins were left inside our computers as we stayed down stairs to pass out the treats. No sunshine as it was dark but it cheered me up. Lot's of the parents accompanying the tiny ones donned costumes this year. The last trick or treater's was a small rabbit, his dad was a frog . When Shah held the bowl of candy out for the bunny the dad said please hand the candy to him as I'm trying to teach him not to grab. I liked that. Shah handed the frog dad a treat as he the left the porch. If only we had more people in our society who did not think grabbing was the only way forward.

Thanks for the OT. I shop at a food co-op called Peoples. It's been here since the late 60's and is still going strong. Anarchists congers up visions of bearded mad extremist bombers in the Balkans, 'terrist's who are gonna kill yer family'. Sharing congers up Dr. Commie Rats. I keep wondering how these nasty fucks who own and run the world managed to bring ordinary people full circle back to this fearful, hate filled, anti-human mind set. I thought the rejection of the Bushies, Cheney's Dark Side by we the people would turn the tide.

Too bad their is no counter culture to counter this vicious, cruel 'world as we find it.' They have made it a crime for people to exist outside the hierarchy of the powers that be. Authoritarianism is the mode today. And yet all across the world there are people who are standing up and saying no. Pirate's in Iceland, BLM, Standing Rock, Corbyn/Labour, the movement behind Bernie's candidacy, the Waloons, wikileaks, South America and demonstrations everywhere as more and more humans have had enough . Sand is being thrown in the political gears. I hope it continues.

Don't let the super creeps keep you running scared

back and making it work for us. A strong social safety net, a guaranteed basic income, and a small set of strong laws. So murderers and rapists stay in jail, not drug users.

Government can do good. Pay a living for those who cannot work, healthcare, education, retirement, infrastructure, environmental safety, consumer safety, workplace safety, food safety, fire safety, etc., etc.

We need to make government reflect our economic rights rather than the 1%'s. It needs to provide checks and balances against corporations, not be in league with them.

New photo from the Alabama gas explosion. With Alabama having been in a severe drought, there is danger of the fire spreading. They're trying to dig a trench to contain the oil until it burns itself out.

you see what government in a Capitalistic system gets you: a smug, inbred and corrupt elite that pays almost no attention to the wants or needs of the rest of the society. That's the story of this country from its founding with a few short interludes.

Anarchism is anything but individualistic. It's built on the concept of mutual aid and trusts in our ability to form the needed democratic institutions ourselves.
