These fish are stoned. Sushi carved from stone may be a bit chewy. Parental warning.

Send independent women with power to think and live over to Japan, and to the world
Heisei has ended and a new era: Reiwa begins.

In this new era, we will continue to produce “independent women” that embody the school philosophy that Tamako Yokoi, the founder, has raised. It is a woman who obtains economic self-reliance, on the other hands, who has also "thinking power" and "energy to live" and can contribute to society.

.. let's cultivate the power to live and power to think, and gain the freedom to choose more possibilities ..

Hope you survived your drinking games with the SOTFU show last night.

Today in history ..

1974 - A grand jury in Washington, D.C. concludes that President Nixon was indeed involved in the Watergate cover-up.

1946 - Ho Chi Minh is elected president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

1930 - Novelist D.H. Lawrence dies of tuberculosis in a sanitarium in Vence, France, at the age of 45.

1931 - (Birthdate) Mikhail Gorbachev, Secretary General of the Soviet Union. Responsible for restructuring the Soviet economy (perestroika) and openness and information (glasnost).

1904 - (Birthdate) Theodor Geisel, better known to the world as Dr. Seuss, the author and illustrator of such children’s books as “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham,” is born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Some Dr. Seuss books tackled serious themes. “The Butter Battle Book” (1984) was about the arms buildup and nuclear war threat during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. “Lorax” (1971) dealt with the environment.

1776 - American troops begin shelling the British in Boston.

1867 - US Congress abolishes peonage in New Mexico.

1939 - Massachusetts Legislature votes to ratify the US Bill of Rights - 147 years late.

modeling some rather bizarre and incongruous postures, gestures and facial expressions? Someone had stitched together a vignette YouTube video, so I went back to scan for proper context. The peculiarities begin toward the end of Brandon’s speech when he addresses toxic chemical exposure of servicemen (and his son) in theatre. Nancy stands up behind him rubbing her fisted knuckles together with a bizarre smile like grimace. Some of the recordings move away abruptly, others hold on Brandon and Nancy on camera a bit longer. The eye contact exchange between Kamala and Nancy that follows is also a bit strange. All of the stitched together YouTube vignette material does come from this portion of the speech, but could be seen as unfairly manipulated, so no link here.

It appears that Brandon is not the only officeholder well past their “best by dates”. This does not reflect well on the state of out nation, at all.

probably the orator reading the teleprompter as well.
Didn't watch it, but read the running commentary at NC.

took a few tries ..

In other news ..

That ship full of cars off from the Azores finally sank.
It was headed here to RI.
Apparently the new *state of the art* lithium ion batteries
in the cars were the cause of the fire. Be careful of new tech.

Apparently some essential “chips” essential for several German auto makers are currently unavailable. New sources may need to be developed, since previously they were made in Ukraine, now a war zone.

What a Beemer-Bummer!

Bernie was Live in NYC last night with Stephen Colbert. Do not worry, you did not miss a thing. Bernie gave his Laundry List of familiar policies.

Just as it seems from the clips that Biden did. I spared myself the SOTU speech and got the gist from a few clips.

The audience was sparse, to say the least . So many empty seats. Bernie was clearly not the only member of Congress or the Senate who blew off this "important" event.

Biden assured the Ukrainian people that they have all our Hopes and Prayers. No Troops. No, No flyover zone. We will be cheering for you, however and demonizing the bad guy who is causing hardship in the USA for the forseeable future. Very comforting to Ukrainians under siege, I'm certain. \s

Oil exceeded $110 dollars per barrel this morning for WTI. That's the West Texas price. The faraway conflict comes to our shores.

Wait until you see your electric bill. I got mine. Maybe it would be a good idea to sit down before opening it up. Con Ed in NYC is a notorious bad actor, so maybe the rest of the country will be doing better.

Pepe weighs in with a few informative Tweets this morning. Here are 2 of the best ones:

Pepe Escobar has been saying that Russia and China and their allies will do just fine without the narrowly designed "world" that is defined by the NATO propagandists. Pepe claims that The Global South will be the New World Power.

What do I believe? No idea. I am confused and a bit frightened by what is clearly coming.

At the least, we are in for prolonged fighting, shortages, rising prices and public disarray.

that the little people in the US will suffer the consequences
of this latest foreign adventure for another 10 to 15 years.
Oh boy! Thanks pentagoons. Playing fast and loose with our
national treasures must be some fun for these idiotic sociopaths.

They are just asking for a bomb in their laps.
Blow their little pippies away.

Is Ash Wednesday the day when you stop drinking or the day you start drinking?

This year it feels like the day you start drinking.

@Bob In Portland

but I think it is along the lines of:
you are to make some kinda pact with your god to cease
some type of heathen pleasure for 40 days to
appease the demons within and suffer with that guy from
nazareth who was undead for a similar amount of time.

so therefore, start drinking!

As a waffling agnostic I have lots of latitude in important decisions like this.
