Open Thread 10-13-16: Success at an early age and worse!

open thread.jpg

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, son of Murray Wilson Mozart, was forced into music at an early age. Luckily he liked it...although he didn't like his dad. Young Vulfy said this:

I'm bugged at my ol' man
Cause he's making me stay in my room
(Darn my dad)

I came in a little late
And my ol' man he just blew his mind
(Blew it bad)

Why did he sell my surfboard?
He cut off my hair in my sleep

Still, although obviously peeved, he managed to write some tunes

whoa, I'm dizzy! That painting of him must be the most famous one. If you google Mozart and click images you'll see that one done up in various styles. Mozart with sunglasses, Mozart with a Mohawk, etc.

But enough about him.

Frederic Chopin changed the spelling of his name. It had been Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin and in fact Pandora thinks it still is. Whenever this comes on

it says it's Fryderyk etc.

Which is fine. I can figure out who it is from that.

Anyway, Chopin was also a child prodigy, composing at the age of seven. He moved to Paris in 1831, at the age of 21. This wasn't too far removed from the time of Byron, Shelley and Keats, a very romantic time for the arts. He became popular in that Paris scene, especially with the ladies. When asked why they liked him he quipped "because of my shirt". Here's what he looked like in his early 20s.

chopin.jpg

In France he started making friends, one of them being Franz Liszt. You might remember they made a movie about Liszt in the 70s starring that deaf, dumb and blind boy, Tommy. He was also a pop star type of the day. Check out this painting!

liszt.jpg

Liszt was pretty old when he had his first big concert, already eleven!

But back to Chopin...When he got a little older he sort of settled into a relationship with the lady known as "George Sand". It was, I think, not so happy but who am I to judge, right? And then he died at the age of 39 from tuberculosis.

Another child star was Frankie Lymon, who OD'd when he was 25 and who caused a scandal because (gasp!) he danced with a white girl on TV! But that'll have to wait for another installment. We've still got to go through Stephen Foster, the Jubilee Singers, Scott Joplin, Irving Berlin....lots to do!

You know, I like to do these music OTs to help us take our minds off the dire reality of life in 2016. Winter doth approach and with it the wind, the rain and the snow. Also the election and a new President or maybe WWIII. What's left of the human race, thousands of years from now, will ask "didn't they see it coming?" Well, some. I'm reminded of the Poe story, "The Masque of the Red Death", starring Vincent Price and Jane Asher. The story, briefly, is Vinnie has a palace where there's a party going on. Jane Asher is refusing to answer questions about Paul McCartney while Patrick Magee looks upset as he asks "more wine?" While they're reveling there's a plague going on outside. Which is kind of like this OT.

Well, now that we've had our little fun, let's chat. We can talk about Chopin, child prodigies, Roger Corman movies, the perilous state of the world. Anything you'd like to talk about is ok today!

About Chopin and Sand...

Notorious Woman was a 1974 BBC television serial based on the life of the French author George Sand. It starred Rosemary Harris in the title role. The seven episodes were written by Harry W. Junkin and directed by Waris Hussein. In the United States, the series was broadcast in 1975–1976 as part of the fifth season of Masterpiece Theatre on PBS. It won an emmy and a golden globe award.

Impromptu
is a 1991 British-American period drama film directed by James Lapine, written by Sarah Kernochan, produced by Daniel A. Sherkow and Stuart Oken, and starring Hugh Grant as Frédéric Chopin and Judy Davis as George Sand. The film was shot entirely on location in France as a British production by an American company.

So many of the early Masterpiece series are no longer available. One of the best Shoulder to Shoulder on the UK suffragette movement is one that stands in my mind but isn't released. I wonder if they just don't want people to see movements and their costs?

Well, let's play a tune and forget the world this morning!

"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."--Napoleon

Five years since he passed, without Dennis Ritchie none of us would be here like this. Thanks a lot.
Edit: Heh! This is all over the 'nets today, some one at google tweeted something like it just happened, and thus it began. I saw the message in comp.misc USENET group but it wasn't like it just happened there. Changed the link title about his passing. Appreciate his contributions. Cheers.
Dennis Ritchie, Trailblazer in Digital Era

In the late 1960s and early ’70s, working at Bell Labs, Mr. Ritchie made a pair of lasting contributions to computer science. He was the principal designer of the C programming language and co-developer of the Unix operating system, working closely with Ken Thompson, his longtime Bell Labs collaborator.

The C programming language, a shorthand of words, numbers and punctuation, is still widely used today, and successors like C++ and Java build on the ideas, rules and grammar that Mr. Ritchie designed. The Unix operating system has similarly had a rich and enduring impact. Its free, open-source variant, Linux, powers many of the world’s data centers, like those at Google and Amazon, and its technology serves as the foundation of operating systems, like Apple’s iOS, in consumer computing devices.

“The tools that Dennis built — and their direct descendants — run pretty much everything today,” said Brian Kernighan, a computer scientist at Princeton University who worked with Mr. Ritchie at Bell Labs.

More importantly to me, this:

What we wanted to preserve was not just a good environment in which to do programming, but a system around which fellowship could form. We knew from experience that the essence of communal computing, as supplied by remote-access, time-shared machines, is not just to type programs into a terminal instead of a keypunch, but to encourage close communication.

Kernighan and Ritchie C language manual, purchased new just as it came out at the start of 1979. Dogeared and rumpled, with the binding broken in a couple places, but still referred to to this day.

He'll be missed...

almost exactly like him. He and his group, The Teenchords, put out some good doowop also.

Since Frankie's group, The Teenagers, had a salable name they hired Pearl McKinnon of the Kodaks to front the group. Pearl sounded very much like Frankie.(Check out some of the songs by the Kodaks - they only made eight - and it's prime doowop.)

the propaganda machine that is TV news informs me that we lobbed a few cruise missiles into Yemen last night, and that that is a Good Thing, because they are Bad People who tried to attack one of our destroyers.

No. No, it is not a Good Thing. The clock inches inexorably a few seconds closer to midnight. I fell for the unfortunate collateral damage folk on the other end of that: we're much better at killing civilians than combatants with our vaunted "surgical precision", these days.

Question: Why did Murray Wilson mistreat his sons.

Answer: Because they deserved it.

My mother played piano and Chopin was one of her favorite composers. Unfortunately, neither my sister nor i got her musical ability. I like these musical OT's! Good

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

there are pluses and minuses.

We have what's called a 48 hour rule, which allows police 48 hours after an incident (including shooting someone!) before they have to tell their side of the story. That interval allows them to coordinate whatever they're going to tell the investigators. The new contract will do away with that, so that's good. It also gives the police a pay raise.

But it really hasn't been looked into enough. What else is in there? That's what's upsetting people. So they went to City Hall where the thing was being discussed, hoping to get the vote delayed. The council, however, pushed it through with little discussion. So it was out to the street to protest!

This morning, Joanne Hardisty and Norman Solomon covered the situation. Joanne discussed it last Thursday morning also. Think there will be a podcast of the program available at KBOO.fm later today day for those interested.

coincidentally had http://list25.com/25-bizarre-facts-about-classical-music/ this posted. Thought it might fit in.

the Nobel prize for literature and Leonard Cohen says he's getting ready to die. So although not 'classical' here's two 20th century classic poet song writers.

So I wanted to post Bob Dylan's 115th Street Blues but SME whoever they are says forget about it...

Sine last night it feels autumnal. Squirrels are busy raiding the birdfeeder, my dog is going crazy. I got a neurology appointment: Dec 1. Due to a cancellation (my guess is someone died).

I see that my monthly dues for caucus99percent membership just flew to JtC. It's good to find a spot of sanity.
