What I really like to know: Are English sub-titles good enough to enjoy a documentary like this one? Or would you need an English speaking narrator to get seduced to potentially look at this? And if you had an English speaking narrator, would you recommend the series to your own kids to watch?

The terrible experience of the Great War leaves the continent bled white, and more and more divided between fascism and communism.

Ach Europa! (10/10) - Die Entdeckung des Friedens (No English subtitles)

What is to be expected of a continent that has twice plunged the world into chaos? The system struggle, the cold war between communism and capitalism also determines the mood in Europe. The Iron Curtain becomes a symbol of division in East and West and separates the Europeans for 40 years. But the dream of self-determination and freedom is changing the societies, the yearning for the observance of human rights and the desire for freedom of movement a continent. Is this the happy ending for Europe? Not necessarily. To this day the continent of Europe is not perfect, its inhabitants are still unanimous and in some cases even disputed. But with all the national all-embraces and a sense of Europe's depravity, today's Europe is the best ever.

Mimi,

Thanks for the links. I will check them out and share them with my kids. My daughter watches a lot of foreign films with subtitles. My son, not so much, but he is a history buff and this might get him interested.

Great stuff!

@mhagle
I had a horrible boring history classes in highschool and after that never studied it other than occasionally reading a book or watch documentaries on PBS.

Because there goes so much work into making these documentaries I am interested if they would ever cross over to someone who doesn't speack German, just by reading subtitles. Myself I find subtitles helpful, but they distract from the visuals of the video.

coverages do you read or watch?
I would like to know if you read and watch just American or English news articles and videos ABOUT German/EU political issues or if you read and watch English Versions of German newspaper, German magazines articles or German TV channels news/documentary-style broadcasts.
Would you be more interested in what German authors write in German newspapers (which then might appear in English in the paper's online English edition) or would you be more interested in what French, British, American, or authors from other countries than Germany, write about German/European issues?
From your experience, what are the differences for example in the Huffington Post American, British and French vs their German edition? Does the German edition has German authors? French edition French authors etc. or are all different language editions just translations from what the original author (from whatever nationality he might have come from) wrote for the Engish edition. I know that CNN has different productions for their overseas CNN channels and was wondering who else. I think RT might have the same set-up, producing different stories and videos for different target countries.

I would appreciate if someone who has long time experience in reading the news would give me their thoughts about it. Thanks.

@mimi I’m headed there tomorrow to assist a friend who blogs about books and such. When on break I like to hang out at the “taz” stand and chat with folks there who are actually engaged in producing the newspaper. Could be just the kind of contacts you’re looking for.

@mimi Calling it “caregiving” would be an exaggeration and not do our friendship justice. Daily life could be wearing and demanding but was also entertaining, rich in little pleasures and experiments (especially involving food and cooking).

Still, being a good Begleiterin or “helper” took my full concentration. Now that I have various age-related limitations of my own to deal with, the end of the day usually found me too worn out to engage with online news and politics.

@lotlizard
I have no health issues or physical limitations yet due to age aside from being easily worn out after a couple of hours of garden work. Everything hurts, my bones especially. That wasn't the case only two years ago. oh well, I miss my son. The distance of a couple of thousand miles is just really not something I can handle easily. I plan to visit him and hope to have some little pleasures too, like pampering him with food and stuff.. Smile

Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.

Looks like we USians may not be able to enjoy this series you've set up for us. I get this message for those I've tried to sample: "This video cannot be viewed from your current location."

@dancingrabbit
for French/German/European produced documentaries, the way I get them here in Germany for many of the US based videos that are posted in the EB, often artsy music videos orother older movie clips etc.

I want to fight these regulations. Or at least understand why they are restricted in some geographical areas. It's a shame.

I am so sorry about that. I will figure out why that is from ARTE themselves.
