"Nemo" Development/Brainstorming #2 : The Home Port and the Ship

So, I really enjoyed the feedback that I got for my series Idea. So much so that I wanted to continue writing on it, jotting down some ideas, and working on the series "Bible" as it were for writers in the world. (All series are eventually a "Shared Universe" and IMHO work best when everybody's on the same page with regards to what's going on in the world)

It also is the most excited about an Idea I've been in a LONG time, and figure it would be a fun thing to continue. Feel free to chime in, criticize and point out plot holes or oversights.

First off, some Mood music for the Place:

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYA_0R7Vw1s]

The Home Port:

Of all the places in the world, the PNW is special to me, but I'm also not blind to its faults. Therefore I want the Home Port of the series to be a good reflection of both the positive and negatives of what we have now, and possible solutions to those problems.

During the last 500 years, there's be a great depopulation due to the religious and secular wars over the ability to make war, so as a result even a city of a 20-30 thousand people is considered a reasonable city, comparable to a Seattle or Chicago of the modern day. As a result, I'm thinking that a great place to set this would be Tillamook, OR. And not just because I want to make Cheese Shop jokes. It's nice, centrally located, and after the major disasters tone down a bit, Has the potential to be a pleasant little community. (As far as location goes. If the name seems off, I'm totally opening to changing it, especially considering that it's a re-founded Port)

The history of this particular town I believe has to start with the group that re-founded it. (I assume the original Tillamook was wrecked by storms, earthquakes, eruptions, and lord knows whatever ecological disasters hit the west coast after an ill conceived idea by the US Government to tap the geothermal power of the "Ring Of Fire") The group was made of a few families and communes in the area that pooled resources after realizing that the government was not coming to help them. As a result, the communities first goal was survival, followed by trying to re-establish contact with other places.

The original group looked to the economic policies that ensured the greatest benefit for the maximum amount of people, and determined that FDR-era New Deal policies were the absolute best for the emergency situation. There was a LOT of public works that needed doing, and a lot of people without the relevant skills. The group even went one step further, instituting the "Four Freedoms" as part of the founding document of the City-state. Hence, all vital infrastructure in the City is socialized, and religions are officially "Tolerated". (In this world, I see the attitude towards religions as being generally ALL or nothing. Tillamook is an exception. Organized religion has lost much of its power, with some minor exceptions. The Mormons, for example, will be better equipped to handle this situation...)

Culturally, the city is a mix of hippie and survivalist. There is a strong martial tradition, since some of the original founders were militia members, and the world is not exactly a safe place anymore. However, most of the hot button political topics are not even addressed, merely treated as old arguments by stupid people. If they are brought up at all it is in parody, or similar to how "Flat Earth" advocates are addressed. Communes are common, as are more traditional arrangements. Ideally, the city should reflect the breadth and depth of human relationships, without trying to advocate for any one.

Technologically, most of the city operates on 17th century science. While there are many artifacts of the U.S. Empire, many are non-functioning, or require electricity, which is in extremely short supply due to the lack of easy resources. Even Solar Panels require a great deal of electricity to maintain and create, and as such are not often used. (Storms and other disasters destroyed much of the stock, and while the capability to create more is there, it's valuable stuff, and displaying it openly is begging a more powerful city state to raid you.) Most newspapers are printed on Kudzu paper, while books are published on hemp paper. (The Marijuana industry ain't going nowhere, and it makes the BEST rope, and since we have wooden ships again...)

Industry in the city is non-existent. Craftsmanship rules the day as far as construction. While there is a mass-transit system it is much smaller scale than anything nowadays, since it's not really needed in a smaller world. Wood is the main construction material, although there is some concrete used. Steel and the like are used only in small amounts, due to the energy and material cost to make.

Militarily, the city functions off a similar policy to the Swiss. They do not maintain a standing army, but do maintain a few Ships of the Line. Mostly for the protection of the trading ships that enter and leave the port. Piracy has made a comeback, and several even call the port home. However, since the pirates spend money and sell cheaply, they are welcome as long as they behave themselves within the port.

The Ship:

The Queen Anne's Revenge was a Frigate, and it seems appropriate for a long distance trading ship. Honestly, I'm thinking an American designed "Super Frigate" (Constitution-Class) would be even more appropriate. The ship was provisioned for up to 6 months, which means it could potentially sail half way around the world without resupply.

The ship Traditionally had a crew of 450. However, that's a bit large for a small community, so many of the guns have been stripped out and replaced with cargo holds. The ship is not outfitted for war, and as a result is nowhere nearly as dangerous as American Frigates were in the past. While the capacity exists to outfit the ship with more "modern" equipment, it's a luxury that almost no small company in the world can easily afford. (In richer societies, they would of course have computer assisted navigation, Modern Naval guns, etc...)

The history of this particular ship is rather checkered. She was originally built approximately 50 years ago and was known as the "S.C.S. Salvation". During the Battle of the Bay, she ran aground in an attempt to escape the lost battle. While the land battle raged, the ship was forgotten, and an enterprising group of Bayfolk stripped out as many guns as they could, floating the ship off and sailing it north in an attempt to escape. Upon arriving at the first major port, They sold the ship, in exchange for homes and citizenship. Now renamed the "C.S. Medea" she served as a privateer for a family that referred to itself as a "House"... (WIP, bear with me on this one. Love the pretentiousness of the whole "House Whatever" as a joke)

Eventually, wood rot and age caught up with the ship, as well as a few dozen battles, and she was sold for scrap rather than repaired. (I see the richer areas as being still caught up in the "Throwaway" society ideal, throwing away good things because they are not PERFECT.) The purchaser moved the ship to their home port of Tillamook, renamed the ship "The Queen Anne's Revenge" and is still a bit in the process of getting her up to shipshape and Bristol Fashion. The ship has all sorts of secrets, hidey holes, and numerous other potentials for great stories.

Phew... That was A LOT of ideas. Feedback welcome, and feel free to help me make this BETTER!

starts off "In the beginning".

In this story "in the beginning" is actually starting over with a new beginning of Home Port rising like a Phoenix from the ashes of destruction.

I noticed your Nemo hashtag, which has been translated as "no man" and spelled backwards is "omen". I'd say you are off to an excellent start.

[Edit: I went back to your previous article and picked up on your musical prelude Nemo. I'll try to keep up now.]

And the name that Odysseus gave Polyphemus...
It's got a rich history, and felt it was appropriate for this. Smile

Glad you're enjoying it. I'm really excited about this idea, and fleshing out this world is a lot of fun as far as world building goes. We now know that the last big holy war was about 50 years ago... which I didn't know when writing this, and occurred on the west coast...
I'm thinking Mormons Vs. Catholics... Seeing as I can totally see the Missions being rebuilt by some of the more militant among that faith if Civilization collapsed...

@UntimelyRippd There are musicians who have made the adjustments necessary to play electric... Mostly Traveling musicians who use kinetic energy on a wagon to charge up batteries for nightly performances. (Very Troubador/Bard style characters, and possibly one of the characters we end up following for the land based adventures/episodes.)

Dang... Ok, want to keep brainstorming MORE now, but Will save the land based episodes for tomorrow... Don't want to burn out here.

@detroitmechworks developing an idea for a "power wagon", basically a utility trailer with unfolding solar panels and an erectable wind turbine, charging up a battery bank to run inverters...not quite as futuristic as your kinetic energy idea. Tesla had some keen ideas for power transference as well. Good luck!

@QMS Essentially adapting the old "Stationary Bicycle Battery Charger" to a wagon wheel. Smile

Do like your idea though, especially if it's part of a small group that travels on the major trade routes overland... AAAARRGGHHH... Tomorrow!

And are they trading or pirating? Back to gimballed compass or celestial navigation? (Latter could be tough in PNW.)

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

detroitmechworks's picture

@riverlover as craftmanship has already been established as a major focus of the ethos of the series, I can see the Gimbled Compass working. After all, it's not the knowledge that's been destroyed, but rather the tools, infrastructure and base skills which would have been rolled back to.

Marine Chronometers on gimbles as well so we don't have to worry about only navigating via Latitude for backup. Smile

Ideally, I see this ship as a bit opportunistic. I don't see them taking advantages of the poor, but am willing to bet a robin hood style ethos would apply whenever encountering the cruel and rich. Smile (Rob from the Rich, Give to ourselves and folks back home.)

As of right now, I see the story starting with it mostly being trading and exploration adventures as the ship and company just try to keep themselves afloat. I envision jaunts up and down the coast, seeing what the remnants of the American Empire have become, some areas better than others, of course...

Seeing as the historical Constitution sailed to China without Resupply, I think the Pacific in general would be a good "Stomping Ground" for the stories. Macro and Micronesia in particular would be great for almost "Galapagos Island" evolution of societies, including some extremely wealthy technologists who retreated to their bunkers... ( With some incredibly specific and detailed castes based off who was who in the pecking order when they decided it was time to run) Smile

Honestly, I Can't wait till the "Down Under" season.

Where does the compass point? It shouldn't point north anymore given the cataclysmic storms and wars.

I like the idea of scavenging and exploring for weapons, technology, and resources. Coming to port and hiking up in the mountains. Ruins and decaying infrastructure...

I think you should game out several nemesis kinds of communities and get a plan for the new map.

I'm in on the brainstorming sessions. Loving it so far.

Ooo... the ship... what year was it built? What does it look like?

I like the idea of like a 20th century frigate that is held together with duct tape where resources and spare parts are always an issue.

detroitmechworks's picture

@k9disc Of course it's been 500 years, so any major changes will have been accounted for in charts via triangulation, etc...

And yes, there are absolutely going to be various kinds of groups that threaten the equilibrium that has settled over the world. Many of them will be thinly disguised characters who represent modern problems. (Right off the bat, I know Organized religions, Corporate Slavers, and Advancement at all Cost Technologists will be some of them.)

What's going to be interesting is I think "Official" maps are going to represent the ideology of the creators of said maps. The remnants of the American Empire will of course not acknowledge any changes to the political structure, which makes their information outdated at best and actively dangerous at worst...

And since this is set in 2517, the ship is of fairly recent construction, but based off the old style of wooden ship. (Age of Sail ships are the dominant form of trade, seeing as supertankers and Giant Cargo ships are not cost effective after the fall of major manufacturing.) (Just off the top of my head, I imagine that Junks will make a comeback in the South Pacific as will Catamarans and numerous other high speed, traditional boats. )

The ship I had in mind as a base model, at least as far as the general look is the USS Constitution. A heavier and more well armed ship than most European vessels of the time. While I like the idea of a modern frigate, I just can't justify it as a main ship for free traders in a post industrial world. (However, I can TOTALLY see one being maintained as a harbor defense vessel for absolute emergencies. Fuel is rare, Ammunition rarer, and most of the electronics would've been ripped out and replaced with manual and analog rangefinders... Sort of like a modern Aircraft carrier in the vein that it's FAR too valuable to lose, so it isn't risked unless there is no other choice.)

steampunk theme. The application of the graphic novel to dog training, I believe, is complete money. It allows me to give people a fast, pictorial, multiperspective look at what dog training actually LOOKS like. And it would be fun, to boot.

I will be going through the process you're going through here with the artist, a buddy of mine, and one of my clients who has pitched a project to me that we can piggy back right on the graphic dog training novel.

I'm thinking that our vehicle will be our bus, suspended by a zepplin, in steam punk style, and myself, my GF, and our dogs will be featured characters. So we'll essentially walk right out of the book into camps, seminars, and contests. It's wacky, but I think it could work.

I'm super into the boat. Would love to see some awkward modern tech or weird tech adapted.

Perhaps a list of potential archaeological tech would be a good move for you. Water powered chargers, not unlike your wagon could be used to power them -- always on the fritz, right?

@k9disc And honestly I'm thinking that things like your graphic novel would be invaluable for folks trying to remember skills of the past without folks WITH the skills to serve as instructors...

There seems to be a lot of interest in the technology in use at the time, so that's going to be today's subject for the brainstorming. I'm not exactly sure where it is going to go, but I'll start writing and see where it leads me. Smile

I do like the idea of a turbine that charges some equipment on the ship. Yes, absolutely it has to be fairly Kludge like... I'm thinking similar to how a low-income gaming enthusiast's PC looks, with an open case, lots of unofficial modifications, and workarounds to ensure the best performance despite not having the best parts...

novel App on the phone, Halftone 2, that uses photos with filters to appear comic book-esque in a host of predefined page layouts. Super amazing app especially with a gopro and POV/interesting angled video screen grabs.

The graphic novel, I believe is an amazing presentation of complex information like dog training. And I agree with you that it will help people on their own and people who are trying to recall things a bit more clearly.

On to Nemo 3...

plenty of guns to fight with, plenty of sail and the best streamlining possible with the technology of the time, so that she could outrun anything she couldn't outgun. Your ship designers should be thinking along similar lines. Smile

@TheOtherMaven It also doesn't hurt that aesthetically it's a gorgeous vessel.

Heck, now I am actually thinking that I need to find somebody who does wooden ship designs for fun, and propose this as a challenge...

Needs to be a ship capable of:
Being a warship and surviving a battle.
Capable of mounting electronics, and possibly a turbine power source...
Being mostly if not completely built in America, with resources only found within a reasonable distance.
Being retrofitted easily.

This would be a fun challenge, and I am now checking online to see if anybody has proposed anything like that... Smile

@TheOtherMaven Ferro-cement are concrete ships build over rebar. My husband showed me the rebar skeleton of one that he and rich(er) friends were building. And then familial girlfriend-stealing drama happened. An abandoned project, a local item-in-a-field here for years. I believe it was designed for sailing oceans, by masts and sails.

Just thinking. All ferrous crap can be used as anchors. Engines, etc. Ti stuff might last longer and would be dense. Bucket of dental implants and joint replacements out of cemeteries? Happy Halloween.

@riverlover it would be a great one off for an episode at the very least.

This is why I love the idea of this as a series rather than a novel, because it allows a lot of authors to bring their passions to it, re-imagined in a scary, but hopeful future.
