Move over Creationists, a "leftie" professor will top your act! It's fun with numbers.

1 + 1 = 2; 2 + 2 = 4; 3 + 2 = 5.

That's mathematics (rudimentary in the example) which is known as "the pure science" because it does not deal with actual objects although it is regularly applied to objective things, like gravity, or astrophysics or even those computer things that often plague us.

Dear reader, please be aware that the following comment is coming from a college professor. Or, at least that is the claim.

A University of Illinois math professor believes that algebra and geometry perpetuate “white privilege” because Greek terms give Caucasians unearned credit for the subject.

But that isn’t the professor’s only complaint. She also believes that evaluations for math proficiency perpetuates discrimination against minority students, if they do worse than their white counterparts.

Archimedes--racist
Pythagoras--racist
Carl Sagan--racist
Albert Einstein--racist
etc...

Now if any of you consider Ben Carson's ignorance deplorable (e.g., earth is only 4500 years old; Egyptian pyramids are granaries) then you will love this.

How this moron ever got a job teaching at a university is beyond my ken (or Barbie--sorry, couldn't resist). So let's see what invaded her neurons (the few still functioning). Now these guys listed above (and the list stretches on hugely) are all white guys--thus the pure science is racist, even though it functions perfectly in the absence of any phylogenetic/psychosocial attachments. My, my.
Has she heard of Chandreshakar, astrophysicist? He was Indian yet used these horrible racist numbers. More recently, how about Michio Kaku? Definitely not a WASP or even white.

Next this "professor" will be calling mathematics and science sexist (watch out Marie Curie etc.)

So on to treating people of color more leniently when it comes to other science education foibles, such as testing real knowledge of the subjects. Professor Gutierrez thinks that POC math students who add 1 + 1 and derive 11 should be given some slack. How'd you like to be riding in an elevator designed by one of those poor, disadvantaged students who somehow managed to matriculate a college?

How far can this pure stupidity go?

This question, of course, reminds that we had an election between Clinton and Trump. Now that's pretty stupid.

The problem is that she wrote texts teaching teachers not to be sucked into the trap of Pythagoras--why don't we call the theorem he devised the Gutierrez theorem, after all, she's a she and hispanic?

Dead white guys DIDN'T come up with an easy-to-use numeric system - dead brown guys did. And the concept of "zero" was invented independently in brown India and red-brown Mayan Central America.

Oh yes, and the same group of dead brown guys who came up with the numerals we now use also came up with - and named - algebra (from the Arabic "al-jabbr", "putting together").

When does ideology cross the line into psychosis?

other terms in mathematics, most prominently "algorithm" -- a corruption of the name of Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (who lived in Persia, but wrote in Arabic), the man who wrote down a collection of step-by-step methods for solving for unknown quantities, in his book The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing, or in Arabic, Al-kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī ḥisāb al-ğabr wa’l-muqābala;.

You might notice in that Arabic title, "al-ğabr", which is in fact the exact phrase that evolved, entirely and only because of its appearance in the title of this work, into our word, "algebra". Al-khwarizmi's book is also credited with introducing to the western world the Arabic system of decimal representation. Amusingly, considering the ethnic implications of the professor's surname, the Spanish word for "digit" is Guarismo. Perhaps she should be denouncing Islamic privilege, which among other things would fit more neatly with the actual history of "Western" mathematics and science, both of which were set back incalculably by the genocidal purge of the Moors (who, by the way, were historically more Berber than Arab, a distinction lost on most people, but of acute significance to Berbers) from Iberia in the 15th century.

The whole story reads like something out of the Onion, but if it's all true, and she's not being taken out of context, the professor is an idiot of exquisite proportion. Perhaps she imagines that African American students would find themselves less under-privileged if they were placed in classrooms, with or without Caucasian students, where mathematics is taught entirely in Swahili.

It is certainly possible to teach math (especially arithmetic) in a racist manner (cases of "loaded" word problems, etc., have surfaced from time to time), but the basic principles are what they are. 2+2 = 4 whether you are in Norway, Nigeria or Nepal.

This sort of shit has been floating around for about a decade or so, and apparently it has finally reached Peak Idiocy.

Not a bit. In fact it favors tearing apart fundamental concepts in order to make an immediate profit in attention and cash.

This Reminds Me of My HS French Teacher who smacked me in the face during class because she was frustrated with another student (and I was a bit out of line).

Exactly ass-backwards! Lingua Latina incorrupta, favore!

Reminds me of those historical revisionists who say that the first language of Richard Coeur de Lion was French! Richard's native land, Aquitaine, was not part of France when he was born! Nor did they speak French there; they spoke Occitan (la lenga d'oc), which is decidedly not French. (It more resembles Catalan or Portuguese.) French was Richard's second language. He spoke only a smattering of English, ever, and it was his third language.

"The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?" ~Orwell, "1984"

I don't have a horse in this race, but I suspect the folks reporting it might.
Fox news sorts love to belittle college professors and political correctness. Latina woman professor talking about POC and whiteness? You betcha.

And yeah, I get it, math is math. Facts are facts.

But. But, why is it that many girls in our culture have it communicated to them at a very early age that physics, for example, is something that boys are better at? I'm a scientist, a faculty member at a large state school in a liberal town. My daughter nonetheless somehow got this virus in middle school. She thought somehow that she couldn't be as good at math and physics as her male peers. A wonderful high-school physics teacher cured her by really inviting in young women and teaching the nerdy boys that they weren't "all that". She was a physics major in college.
Do you think it is possible that our culture communicates negative things to POC about their possibilities for success? Sure, I know of Neil DeGrass Tyson, but does this mean that there is not room for improvement in how Math and Science is taught?
And, by the way. I'm male and a scientist. I've seen a lot of sexism in science. Thankfully, the good old boys network is slowly losing power, at least where I am.

I only wanted to make clear that Ms. Gutierrez is not a mathematician and has nothing to do with the math dept. at Illinois.

It was Ms. Markota who called her a "math professor" which is incorrect.

She is in the education department and is qualified to offer advice on teaching methods.(fwiw).

Not to alarm you, but I probably want you to quit your job, or at least take a demotion. Statistically speaking, you are probably taking up room that should go to someone else. If you are a white cis man (meaning you identify as male and you were assigned male at birth) you almost certainly should resign from your position of power. That’s right, please quit. Too difficult? Well, as a first step, at least get off your hiring committee, your curriculum committee, and make sure you’re replaced by a woman of color or trans person. Don’t have any in your department? HOW SHOCKING.

Amazing Aztecs Were Math Whizzes Too

The type of mathematics the Aztecs used to calculate land holdings seems to be consistent with their calendar mathematics, which are more well-known, Williams said.

"This fits very nicely with the mathematics we are more familiar with, which is the mathematics of calendrics," Williams said. "They coordinated the solar calendar with the lunar calendar with Venus cycles. They did it proportionally, one cycle with another."

The ability to make calculations using proportions was widespread across cultures by that time.

"The Maya had this also," Williams said. "Also we see it in the counting of people and objects. This all fits in very nicely."

I didn’t make this post to have a pissing match over who was better at math, the Aztecs or Maya. The intent of my post was to show that not only are different peoples every as good at math as whitey, they helped develop mankind’s understanding of math in the first place. I got my info from LiveScience. Now i’ll Post from Science.

The Aztecs, who ruled central Mexico for several hundred years before the Spanish arrived in 1519, left the most extensive mathematical writings of any pre-Columbian people. Two manuscripts in particular have intrigued scholars because they portray land holdings in the Valley of Mexico along with their measurements, using the Aztec numbering system, for purposes of taxation. Now a geographer and a mathematician have zeroed in on just what methods Aztec surveyors used to measure the surface of a field in one of these documents, the Codex Vergara.

*

Although the Aztecs are the only early Americans to have left these kinds of technical documents, it's reasonable to assume that other groups such as the numerically sophisticated Maya used similar systems, Smith says. "There's a view that ancient peoples were obsessed with religion and that science and knowledge were all directed at religious ends," he adds. But the paper shows that the Aztecs apparently liked to get their measurements right--and certainly when it came to taxation.

Did you have a point other to crap all over what I posted? I’m sure you’ll provide your proof. And then maybe tie it into the OP.

She should have known that the Maya were working that ground a thousand years earlier. They didn't have it "also", they had it first.

We would know a lot more about Mesoamerican cultures in general if the Spanish frailes hadn't been such fanatical codex-burners. Their attitude was exactly that of the (legendary?) Islamic leader who burned the Library of Alexandria for the final time. "If it isn't in the Qur'an it isn't true", said he, "and if it is, it isn't necessary." (And that is how the Arab world lost its chance to stay ahead of the European barbarians....)

Edit: We seem to be developing the same sort of stupid, this time based on Identity Politics. If it was invented by white men, it's worthless. Blum 3

(I also get annoyed that the Aztecs get all the attention, when the Spanish walked all over them in about two years. It took more like two centuries to conquer the last Maya city-state....)
