On this day in history:

-

On September 23, 1338, the first naval battle of the hundred years' war, the Battle of Arnemuiden, occurred. Big whoop, but - it was the first known naval battle to involve gunpowder based artillery. Five, count 'em, five, English cogs were set upon by a huge French fleet. One English ship had 3 cannons and a hand gun, but they were merchant ships. Insofar as they were set upon by a sizable French fleet, we must assume that those were the equivalent of warships. After an entire day's combat, the French forced the English to surrender, captured the English ships and their cargo, and slaughtered all of the surviving crewmen. Total English fatalities were 1,000, to a mere 900 for the French. The war continued for well over 100 years, nonetheless.
.

-

1779brought us a more famous naval battle, though not necessarily by name, Battle of Flamborough Head. This ws the famous ship to ship duel between the Bonhomme Richard and the Serapis in which John Paul Jones declared that he had not yet begun to fight and which he eventually won. Cannons were de rigeur by this time, though two of Jones' 18 pounders exploded killing those nearby, causing Jones to abandon the use of an entire battery of 6 of them. This was a classic pyrrhic victory in many ways, but Jones won the battle and fame sufficient that in his later years he was hired by none other than Catherine the Great as a rear admiral in the Black Sea.

-

Neptune was discovered on this day in 1846, but nobody was able to plant a flag on it so it remained unclaimed.

-

Nintendo was founded in 1889.

-

1911 saw the first official airmail delivery.

-

The first flight across the Mediterranean took place in 1913.

-

In 1932 the unification of Saudi Arabia was finally completed.

-

The first public version of Mozilla Firefox was released in 2002.

I hope fall brings some much needed rain.

They are shutting down DC today. Here's a live stream...

...and in NYC they are having the UN climate summit.

Perhaps more than the season will turn. Have a good day y'all.

month, but are having a bit of a heat spell by local standards currently. Cheers for XR, let us hope that something comes of all this. Sorry about all of the typos that I just corrected. Problems with the hands for a few months now,

Have a great week.

“This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be standing here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to me for hope? How dare you.”

Swedish school girl Greta Thunberg made a angry, accusatory speech to world leaders on Monday in New York.

“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction. And all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you.”

Moving slow today, no energy. Have to go to Spectrum and change out their modem, not working so i'm on wifi.

Have a good one.

Uber-rich 1%er power-bearing class asshats: "We dare quite fine, thank you! Just like we always have and always will!"

Welcome to the 99% club, Madame Greta. Eternal economic growth for them, suffering, dying, and eco-collapse for us. Throughout living memory it has ever been thus. Bad

And thank you for taking up the fight, most gallant Lady!

Et al

Extinction rebellion disrupted DC this morning. But little MSM news. Ut Greta made a big splash.

The next few days are going to be really hot again. Last week we had one day at 105. If this keeps up it’s going to wreak havoc with the wildlife. The bees were freaking out carrying water to their hive. It will no doubt be Bay wide.

Thanks for the OT. Have a good one...

Edit to say the embed did not work on the tweet. meh.
