Monday OT: September 2 is Labor Day (United States)
![](https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1493/26212496565_b2b949e0a3.jpg)
September 2 is day 245 of the Gregorian Calendar year,
Setting Orange, Bureaucracy 26, 3185 YOLD (discordian),
And let us not forget 13.0.6.14.6 by the Mayan Long Count
This isn't a date holiday, but one of those "first Monday" holidays. Its purpose , per the ever mainstream wikipedia, is that:
It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the development, growth, endurance, strength, security, prosperity, productivity, laws, sustainability, persistence, structure, and well-being of the country.
Pretty impressive, eh wot? At least Costco and REI are closed, and the banks, and the government, but Walmart and most major retailers are open either all day or some part of the day. I wonder if any of the workers at least get time and a half or something. I bet the cops do.
So, dragging ourselves back toward reality, ...
On this day in history:
In 1666, the Great fire of London broke out. Even though it burned for 3 days and destroyed over 10,000 buildings, a focal point of a lot of discussion seems to be that Old St Paul's Cathedral. was also destroyed. Alas, poor old Old St, Paul's.
.
In 1789, the US Treasury Department was founded. I have noted before that 1789 was a rather momentous year for the fledgling US and its fledgling government, really worth a good look. A peek at the goings on in France would not be remiss either.
In 1807, the British Navy bombarded the city of Copenhagen, which was essentially a civilian target, but nobody cared back then, not that they did in 1945, or 2003, or at any time since either. They were simply a bit more honest and open about it back then.
In 1945, the Japanese government signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on the U Battleship Missouri out in Tokyo Bay. On the exact same date, Vietnam declared its independence and formed Democratic Republic of Vietnam to which the so-called Western Democracies, said "like hell you will".
In 1958, a United States Air Force C-130A-II flew into Russian airspace while conducting a signals intelligence mission and the no good dirty Russkie bastids shot it down. Even though the aircraft had been maintaining radio silence for some time, and nobody survived to tell the tale, some sources nonetheless insist that the incursion was some sort of mistake. Yep, it clearly seems to have been that.
In 2013, the eastern span of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge opened to traffic, a mere 14 years after it got hammered by the Loma Prieta earthquake.

Good morning all
Category 5 Hurricane Dorian, in no hurry to clear the Northwest Bahamas, gave the Abaco Islands a prolonged, punishing blow on Sunday. Grand Bahama Island is in line for similar treatment on Monday as Dorian slows to a crawl. The hurricane is still projected to arc dangerously close to the Southeast U.S. coast as this week unfolds.
Dorian is tied with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 in the Florida Keys as the most powerful landfalling Atlantic hurricane (by wind speed) on record.

Looks like a dry week for us in NE AL, but a foot or more of rain on the coast.
I hope you all have a great holiday and don't have to labor too much. I plan to mow a little and already have a nice stew prepared for today.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Good morning lookout, thanks for the update on Dorian.

Good morning, el,
The Sleeping Gypsy ~ Henri Rousseau, 1897
Not bad for a self-taught artist, eh?
Another magnificent blue-sky day in the mountains.
Moving slow this morning; feeling stupid in a funny way as i spent a lot of energy and time yesterday combing through my room looking for a letter i recalled picking up in the downstairs mailbox; looked everywhere possible several times. An important letter that i recalled arriving Friday or Saturday. Replayed the mailbox scene behind the eyes many times best i could to no avail.
Spent hours wondering how i could fix the letter's missing, dreading the bureaucracy that would entail; angst and frustration. Did i throw it away or did i dream of receiving it to begin with?
As usual, up in the middle of the night, i sat reading the net and thinking of that letter where had i not looked? Inside the refrigerator ...
Yep, i'd placed the letter in a plastic grocery bag on Friday as my hands were full and had forgotten to take it out before placing the cukes and squash in fridge.![Smile](https://caucus99percent.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
Thanks for being here on holiday and hope you've a good one.
Good one! :)
I once put my shoes in the refrigerator when I was two years old. My Mother thought she was going crazy looking around the house trying to find them. She loved telling that story.

When I was 2 I buried my training pants in the garden,
because I wet them and didn’t want to get in trouble. I vaguely remember getting the idea from television, where people who committed murder buried the bodies in the backyard. My mom was mystified to find my underwear buried in the garden.

Love the way
The mind works. Glad you found it. When I was in grad school I lost the grade book for the one class I was teaching. Due that day. 30 folks. I said to myself as I was standing on the hearth, I am not moving from this spot until I figure out where that book is. Then I thought to look behind the piano and there it was. So weird. How does that work.

Yeah, forgetting where stuff is
Lately, simple things turn up missing. Then comes the detective role. Keep thinking -- things don't just disappear. Or maybe phase-change into a different form? Found the vacated memory in a very strange place today. Wasn't my idea, but it is still humorous. Forget me knot.

We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.
what a horror photo!
It would really be a shame if someone took that horror picture and replaced the word "making" and put something more appropriate in its place, some truth in advertising... It could still end with '...king'.
Have a great one all,

Good Morning EL
Labor Day and I have a 1p-9p shift today. Inevitably, I'll get customers remarking how terrible it is that I have to work today as they shop at our store. The irony always lost on them.
I actually love my afternoon shifts. The best part of the day is mine. I'm making some chicken stock right now. Cool and clear this morning. Went out into the garden and watered my tomato plants and azaleas. Later I'll do a little writing. Enjoy the rhythm of my life much more then when I used work the regular 9-5.
Hope you all have a good one!

Good morning Anja. Hope you enjoyed your day so far and
enjoy your afternoon and evening as well. Have a good one.

hello, it's the Nazi revival day in Germany, though
nobody but me realizes that. So, I guess it's not my day today. Heil, Heil, Hell, Hell. Our former Social Democratic Party is worse than yours. So frigging neo-liberal and coward they helped the AFD to grow beyond something that used to be marginal and on the fringes. The Social Democrats can as well kill themselves, because they are dead already. What a fuck of a country we have become.
