Bearded Dragon

Bearded Dragon

-

Some bearded dragons are intersex, or hermaphroditic. This condition occurs in other animals as well.

-

Related factoid: Since days of yore there has been a type of sailing vessel known as a hermaphrodite brig. They're two masted, square rigged on the foremast, and schooner rigged on the main mast. That is a classic "schooner rig" with a triangular topsail above a gaff rigged main sail.  I was going to use a picture of one for this column and discovered that use of the term is now limited to Europe, while modern US usage is to call such a vessel a "Brigantine", a word that used to be used for a different type of two masted vessel having a square rigged topsail and sometimes even a top gallant above the gaff rigged mainsail.  (Of course, in large portions of the US, they use yawl as a pronoun instead of a noun applying to a two masted craft with the mizzen stepped aft of the rudder post.)

“The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls. Every truth we see is ours to give the world, not to keep for ourselves alone, for in so doing we cheat humanity out of their rights and check our own development.”

Had a nice display of different ship designs.
Here's an example...
Maritime museum (32).jpg

If you ever find yourself there it is a fun museum to visit.

Well thanks for the OT and music. Just light enough to go down to the garden. Need to spray soapy water with a little neem oil on the mustard greens...have an aphid infestation. Fortunately that's all that seems affected by them.

Everyone have a nice day!

@Lookout

Brigantine - it isn't a true "schooner rig" on the rear mast, but rather square rigged up top with a gaff rig under. The classic hermaphrodite would be "fore-and-aft" above the gaff rig too..

You'll have to explain why the soapy water+neem oil mix. I used to get serious aphics on my kale, broccoli and some of the chard, but just used neem oil.

be well and have a good one.

There is a good article on herd immunity in Counterpunch . You may have already covered it, sorry if I missed it. https://www.counterpunch.org/2020/10/23/the-scourge-of-herd-immunity/

Here are a few quotes from that article:

William Haseltine of ACCESS Health International recently said, “herd immunity is another word for mass murder.” If covid spreads widely, which this type of herd immunity advocates, “we’re looking at two to six million American dead not just this year, but every year,” Haseltine added. This is the policy of the Trump regime: millions of dead Americans.

Sweden famously opted for herd immunity. Death statistics for Scandinavian countries are instructive here. As of October 6, Denmark had 663 covid deaths, Finland 346, Norway 275 and Sweden 5892, according to Statista. Sweden also had by far the most covid cases, 96,677. Sweden didn’t lock down as other Scandinavian countries did, nor did it impose a mask mandate. It relied on people to use their judgment. While this succeeded in crashing the economy, as cautious citizens stayed home, it still resulted in many more dead than neighboring countries, which systematically locked down and mandated masks.

In addition to causing mass death, such herd immunity to covid would leave millions disabled. And again, herd immunity might never be reached with an illness that can reinfect people or which becomes chronic. So herd immunity is a fool’s errand. But don’t tell that to Scott Atlas or others in the Trump regime. Indeed, last month the CDC drafted an order for all public and commercial transportation passengers and employees to wear masks. The white house blocked it.

Here's another musuem worth seeing if you are in that neck of the woods.

Sheepvaart Museum in Amsterdam - National Maritime Museum

https://www.hetscheepvaartmuseum.com/about-us/history-of-slavery-and-the...

How does the National Maritime Museum deal with the presentation of the Netherlands' colonial past and the history of slavery?

The subjects have been our focus for some time already. In our programming, the topics of colonialism and slave trade always play a key role in the stories, as an integrated part of the whole.

In 2001, The National Maritime Museum presented the exhibition Slaves and Ships and an eponymous publication. A Dark Chapter (2013) an exhibition based on research by Leo Balai, was about the slave ship Leusden, which sank on the Maroni river in Suriname at the humiliating cost of over 700 enslaved Africans. In 2019, the museum and the Evangelical Broadcasting Association created the interactive web documentary Chained, which introduces the viewer to the shared history of the Netherlands and Suriname during the time of slavery.

Cold today. No rain in sight. More gardening to do.

Be well, all. Take good care.

Dornier was pretty clever in aeronautics. He sure could build a big flying boat early on, and that 'arrow' was great thinking. Sikorsky too was a mega mind in flight.

Brigantine was a great Nat. Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey, a town nearby with the same name, don't know etymology. Brig as Jersey birders called it, is now named Forsyth NWR. I birded it a bit when I lived in Jersey, once found my own Curlew Sandpiper there.

Have a goodn'!

Here's a pic of the Arrow taken by Steven Little and posted to Flickr under a creative commons license, it shows the two props (front & rear) fairly clearly but the lower rudder, mirroring the top one is largely obscured.

Congrats on the Curlew Sandpiper - never have seen one myself.

I really fell for the romance of it all.

Edit to add: if you type in "The Last Voyage of the Brigantine Yankee" you'll go to an unsecure site/blog with a lengthy journal of one of the passengers. It's dramatic, mysterious, tragic. Lots of amateurs and unscrupulous owners. There are some videos from the last trip made by the same author as the blog. There is even a disappearance.

I always heard when I fished, that a boat is a vessel that can be put on another's deck. Inquiring minds....
