Meet StevenD, riverlover in Cortland, NY!
Submitted by Wink on Thu, 12/07/2017 - 5:18pm
Meet StevenD, riverlover and Wink in Cortland, NY for our first ever C-99 Meetup!
It's going to be Fri. Jan. 5th, 5pm 'til 7pm for an early dinner at Doug's Fish Fry in Cortland. Possibly an after dinner drink at a local pub. Doug's has shrimp and clams as well as a damn fine fish sandwich or dinner for your dining pleasure. Beer, too. No real plan here except to meet & greet, and possibly plan a bigger event in Utica, NY. We hope to see you in Cortland in January!
[Edit] Date changed from Thur. 5th to actual calendar date of Fri. Jan. 5th

No worries.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Post an essay...
to remind everyone and I'll front page it and sticky it for a day or so.
Will do in the Morning.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Oh, that sounds so good.
I would love to eat seafood in y'all's company.
Maybe one day I will.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
So close, but so far away.
You are driving distance of my home, but I'll be out of town for a conference.
Maybe next time. :) n/t

if only it were Portland, OR
Then I'd be down for a meeting. I'm in Seattle, but I'm moving to a tiny township outside of Rochester, WA., so everything is a bit of a shitshow right now, especially since I got laid off without notice just before Thanksgiving., so finances suck, but that's an aside...
If some other PNW'ers wanted to potluck, or meet and co-miserate in the Spring, I'm def up for it..
Otherwise have a great time, make it a springboard for more new fun possibilities!!!
Thanks, BORG!
and good luck to you! No money for jobs, but, by God, we got TONS of $$ for -ahem- "Defense."

There's something tinier than Rochester?
@Big Al Indeed.
Oakville is smaller, but where I'm moving is up Hwy 12 from there. It was a township, that has been absorbed by Elma. It's a Census Designated Place / Unincorporated Community. It's one of the least populated places in Washington at 238 people over 8.9 square miles. There's like 12 houses in the "downtown" and it's a two block walk to the Chehalis river. It's pretty sweet.
Sounds great.
depending on some things...
like time and weather, i might be able to make it there. so mark me down as tentative.
cool, Joe! We'll have
more, so if you can't make this one maybe the next!

@orlbucfan Actually, orlbucfan, I've
I fear that it might be difficult to come up with a place suitable for both north and south FL folks. People outside FL have no notion how long this state really is. The obvious choice is Orlando, but that might be too far for folks like Alphalop.
Let's chew this over and come up with an idea.

@Benny Well, I didn't want
On the other end would be some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, though.
And some truly great grouper, for those who like such things.

@Benny Feb would be better
I'm not judging--the only reason I didn't have the same feelings in college was because I not only went to college in Florida but was born and raised here, and so I learned to avoid the beach in March rather than seek it (why court the crowds when you can go to the beach most anytime?)--but being part of a drunk crowd is only fun, I find, when you too want to be drunk. Being even remotely sober in a drunk crowd is not fun at all, at all. Unless you're at a rock concert and the musicians are awesome.
So C99 would be better served to visit my lovely state sometime before March 1 or after April 8. April is, actually, a rather good time to come to FL. September used to be, but September seems to be becoming Big Storm Month. I hope that pattern doesn't hold.

I suspected Aspie was a Floridian, but
I didn't realize there are many others on here living in my poor, dumb state. You are absolutely correct about the physical length of this sandbar. If you drive from the FL/AL border all the way down to Key West, you are looking at 2 days travel easily. Everyone knows Orlando as it is a major international tourist trap, and the attractions are growing. Ugh! I don't do diaries, but someone else more tech-savvy can about assembling a Meetup here. There is a better choice in terms of location for all of us. FL is a big skinny state. LOL. Let me know, okay?

The more of these
the merrier. I envision monthly Local Meetups (within 20 miles /mins.) (east of Mississippi); Quarterlies (within 150 miles /2.5 hours); with the summer or fall Quarterly an Annual Meetup (within 350 miles /6 hours), so 3 Quarterly meetups and 1 Annual. Move the Quarterly and Annual Meetups around so the same people aren't driving the farthest every time. A little more difficult west of the Mississippi.
On the calendar it would look like:
Jan. Quarterly
Feb. Local
Mar. Local
Apr. Quarterly
May Local
Jun. Local
Jul. Annual
Aug. Local
Sep. Local
Oct. Quarterly
Nov. Local
Dec. Local
So, 8 Local meetups, 3 Quarterly and 1 Annual in a calendar year.
That's very busy, but if you get to even half of those that's a pretty successful year.
The point of monthly Local meetups, of course, is to bring someone with you. Mostly to show that new someone that s/he is Not alone. Many others feel the same way, and some of them are here tonight! Get that new someone to the next Local or, better yet, Quarterly, and there's a good chance s/he shows up at the next Local, becomes a regular like the rest of us.
Local: Just need a pub or restaurant willing to host your Local. Be sure to order a burger and beer to pay for the hospitality!
Quarterly: Need a small conference room (less than 100 ppl) at a Days Inn or similar hotel.
Attendees should expect to pay $20-$30 to cover cost of room, food.
Dinner in the conference room, followed by meeting.
Annual: Bigger conference room, bigger hotel. One or Two-night stay. Dinner and Meeting, After Meeting networking, morning Breakfast. $45 to cover conf. room, dinner (one night). Room, breakfast extra. Figure $200 (one night) to $400 (two nights). Way Way cheaper than N.N.!
That's the Long View, of course, a year or two down the road, but there's no reason why it can't happen, why We can't make it happen. Imagine your Local meetup w/ 20 ppl.! Even ten and you've got something going on! You've got 10 people at a Downtown event! That's Yuuuge!

One thing I learned from working the Dean
campaign is word travels. It always has. There were just a few of us in the beginning, but by the time a Clintonista bitch sabotaged our group (she was pulling a power play), we had enough supporters to actually host an anti-Iraq war symposium at one of the biggest colleges here in Orlando. This was back in 2003-4. TOP had barely started and we didn't have the social media tools that are here now. Word traveled by phone and email. It's just like that old wise saying: you put the word out and they will come. My problem is I'm not a diarist nor am I all that cyber tech-savvy. I do know how to write and social organize FWIW.
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
yeah, I expect it would,
hope it will! I know some locals on FB that might be interested in Cortland.
And, don't worry about what you can't do. We all have each other's back. No worries.

@orlbucfan social organize is
it can be a grind, though. often ends up with one or two people pulling the whole weight. I wish I knew a way to counter that.

@Wink this is great stuff,
you're reminding me of how to be an organizer!
I think some of those parts of me got a bit damaged in D.C.--not from disuse, but from being in a pretty horrible time and place. Last time I did anything like this was Occupy.

Social Manager/Organizer is a lot of
physical work if it's done right. If I was 20-30 years younger, I would raise my hand and volunteer. I just don't have the stamina anymore, but I do have experience doing it. Right now, the conversation has started. That's always the important first step.

OMG count me in!
Great idea and I'll be there unless 2-legged or 4-legged family makes it impossible. Doug's! My car drives itself into the parking lot whenever the Doug's sign appears. Hope to see other NYers there too.
Yeah, hard to beat Doug's!
The first time I went there in SkinnyAtlas, a zillion years ago, I thought the cashier rang me up wrong. "uhh, I got the dinner... " "yup, you're all set... " yum!
Welcome aboard, GusBecause! Just look for StevenD's mug.

Hey y'all
I made a spot at the bottom of the left sidebar for c99 Meetups information. Check it out and if I made any mistakes or you want more info added let me know.
Wink, I don't mean to hijack your thread.
I just tried to send a personal message to @Can't Stop the Macedonian Signal about putting together a Florida Meetup. She doesn't accept them. So, if she checks back--let orlbucfan know how I can communicate with her? Many, many thanks, Wink!
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
You sent a PM...
(Private Message) via our PM system to CStS and she doesn't accept them? That's not possible, all PMs go through so there must be some other problem.
@orlbucfan What? I do accept them!
