Meanwhile in Australia

... people are thinking of getting out. One of Australia's bushfire historians imagines:

If people are to continue living in these places, “they’ve got to drastically change their relationship with the surrounding environment; they’ve got to drastically change the surrounding environment in order to be able to survive and reduce their vulnerability,” says Ross Bradstock, director of the Centre for Environmental Risk Management of Bushfires at the University of Wollongong. “Another option is the retreat from flammable places.”

Another writer from Australia suggests a difference between this fire and past ones:

For the very first time, the wetlands are also on fire. Old Gondwana growth, ancient forests are aflame. This is not the forest that regenerates; what is being lost will never return.

In measuring the extent of the damage, Scientific American's Andrea Thompson is into counting:

It is impossible for scientists to know precisely how many animals have been killed until fires subside enough to allow surveys of the burned areas. Chris Dickman, an ecologist at the University of Sydney, extrapolated the known population densities of mammals, birds and reptiles over the more than 12 million acres burned in New South Wales to arrive at the 800-million estimate. If the fires in the states of Victoria and South Australia are included, that would push the number to more than one billion animals whose habitat has been on fire, Dickman says.

Don't forget Queensland. Or for that matter Kangaroo Island.

Reuters summarizes the response:

Australia’s government is sticking firmly to a position that there is no direct link between climate change and the country’s devastating bushfires, despite public anger, the anguish of victims and warnings from scientists.

As for climate change, Time magazine puts out this headline: "Australia's Wildfires and Climate Change Are Making One Another Worse in a Vicious, Devastating Circle."

Oh, and as for those "misleading" maps -- they may be exaggerated, but they aren't too far off. What does Business Insider say?

Though we certainly appreciate Rihanna spreading the word, the image itself is somewhat misleading. It pulls accurate data from NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management Systems (FIRMS) and gives a correct view – at the time – of where fires were blazing, but doesn’t quite accurately represent scale. The glow of the 3D fire effect also makes the fires seem much larger than they actually are.

There's rain, but not enough. So this is ongoing.

A quote, variously attributed to native American peoples, is that "When the Last Tree Is Cut Down, the Last Fish Eaten, and the Last Stream Poisoned, You Will Realize That You Cannot Eat Money." This is the situation Australia finds itself in. Remember that Australia is a major coal exporter. There's money in them there rocks!

From Katharine Murphy of The Guardian writing in 2017:

There is no way you can write the sentence, “The treasurer of Australia, Scott Morrison, came to question time with a lump of coal on Thursday,” and have that sentence seem anything other than the ravings of a psychedelic trip, so let’s just say it and be done with it.

Scott Morrison brought coal into the House of Representatives. A nice big hunk of black coal, kindly supplied by the Minerals Council of Australia.

“This is coal,” the treasurer said triumphantly, brandishing the trophy as if he’d just stumbled across an exotic species previously thought to be extinct.

“Don’t be afraid,” he said, soothingly, “don’t be scared.”

Embrace your inner commodity.

saying goes, when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

Unless, I guess, if there is coal in the hole. Now how do you like your coal? Medium-rare? /s

Remember when some doofus brought 'yellow cake' into congress to fool people into believing some fairy tale about threats from without? Or another congress critter brought in a snowball to prove global warming was a hoax?
Stupid is what stupid does.

Vietnam era flashback. Not to be confused with an actual PTSD flashback, but still valid in its way. I’d seen the same lying years before.

Maybe when 20 million of them show up at some border people will listen.

The numbers of animals affected by the fires is so heartbreaking. Fortunately there are many people stepping up to help displaced and injured animals. The Irvin family of the crocodile hunter Steve Irvin are helping 90,000.

Damn the sociopaths who are hell bent on this path of destruction. Exxon was found not guilty for its role in climate change. How the hell could people decide that if the evidence was submitted? We have all seen the reports that they knew about this for over 4 decades and did all they could to hide it.

Damn the sociopaths in congress and other government agencies for not doing a damn thing about it when the world is screaming for them to do something. Obama wasted his 8 year crime spree not doing anything except to make it worse by opening up so many new areas for drilling and Hillary for exporting fracking all over the world.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

Voting is like driving with a toy steering wheel.

@snoopydawg in the Reuters piece? How long do you think it will take before any of what used to be there comes back?

that have been affected by the fires or during other horrible things. I am super sensitive when it comes to animals in pain. Especially because I am so helpless to help them.
