Lost Wages

open thread_121.jpg

Well, we are catching a flight to Las Vegas this morning. Off to make a deposit there.
Supposed to be 113° there today, so will probably be indoors most of the time.
But we have booked a couple of shows and have rented a car to do a little touring, Boulder Dam/Lake Mead, Pawn Stars, a couple of museums, etc. Have booked a reservation at Hell's Kitchen and looking forward to an In-n-Out burger.
I know using those two in the same sentence will probably get me cussed out by Gordon Ramsey himself. We could only be so lucky. A free show!
Been at least a decade since we've been there last. Supposed to be some new venues and attractions. Some new casinos to check out.
The hotel/casino we are staying at is affiliated with two other hotel/casinos and allows us to use their pools and perks, so we will be touring pools also.
Anybody been there lately that could give us some tips of what not to miss?
We are flying in a Boeing Max, so yes, we want to miss hitting the ground though.
Will pick up the comments when I land. (safely)

from 4 days on Lake Billie Chinook playing on jet skis and camping. Temps hovering around the 100 mark.
Had a good time but a little sore though.

@earthling1 Red Rock Canyon, well worth it. Nice park.
Also, get tickets for a copter flight over the Grand Canyon, touch down for a picnic on the rim, fly back in to Vegas, save your wages, starve the slots.
Have fun, and good luck!

cone-zone season in the Denver area.

Denver apparently has 135,000 different roadwork/paving companies, most of whom lay fallow for the winter. Paving can only be done in the summer, you see, when it won't freeze. So, they wait with bated breath for warm weather, and immediately go out and set up their millions of cones on every street, highway, and cow path, just as soon as it stops freezing overnight.

They then go on break for two months.

Suddenly (and as regular as a clock can tick), they show up in mid-July, and bust up all the pavement they can, leaving dusty holes in the roads protected by their millions of cones. Jackhammers for days.

They then go on break until late September.

And they suddenly come back from break in October, just in time to start the actual paving just as the first snows fly. And paving over the summer mud you made, but during freezing season, means that said pavement immediately buckles, heaves, cracks and has to be redone in a year or two.

Lather, rinse repeat. It's not a job- it's an *annuity*.

The town I live in made the amazing decision to have every street leading to the center of town (where the post office is) essentially closed for repaving for the summer. My commute to my work goes by 11 separate paving projects over the course of 8 miles, all of which have been coned off for months, and only *now* are they finally jackhammering. All at once.

I'd like to see them maybe team up to do 1/10th of the jobs, 10 times faster. But then, I'm not a civil engineer, so whadda I know?

Actually, at this point, I'm a pretty damned uncivil engineer. Not a fan. That is all...

I lived up a canyon at 4000 ft elevation.
Every September the road crew would come through and glue reflectors down the center of the country road and 2 months later the snow plow would come through and scrape them off.
Over the years the side of the road became quite a light show at night.
Thanks for stopping by.

the pick-up there to meet relatives for a few days. For me the highlights were the day we went out to Red Rock and spent the day hiking, exploring and picnicking, and hotel breakfast. One in-house venue had Loco Moco on the breakfast Menu, which I then got to eat every day.

Another trip was a replacement for our spring desert road trip which we cancelled because of a broken water main. With about 4 days left, we flew to Vegas, rented a car, checked into a hotel and saw "the sights". The next day we jumped into the rental and proceeded to go romp all over the Mojave, Borrego and Yuha deserts, staying in motels instead of camping. The highlight was dropping the car off at the airport at the end of 3 days having put 2,000 miles on it, much to the bewilderment of the car rental folks.

Beyond that, dunno. except, if you've never been there before, a side trip to Needles might be called for just so you could say you've been there.

a little hot to do any hiking but touring in the air conditioned car will work.
Been through Needles many times, even back when Route 66 was the main thoroughfare.
Grew up in LA. First trip to Vegas was back in the late 50s with parents. Watched the birth and demise of the "Rat Pack".
It has grown a lot since then.
Have a great day.

Hi all, Hey E1!

Great you found those old unused enough muscles! Wink I do that more and more lately!

I think Blackjack is said to have best odds, only thing I ever won at. Luck be with you!

If you don't ever get the fun of a mountain peak, a drive up Mt. Charleston is great. It is their ski resort in winter. Nice pine forest, maybe Goshawk, great views of the desert, and cooler air at 7000'.

In town the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve is a top hot spot for birds. But you have to go crack of dawn or so this time of year, don't know when it opens. Desert Game Range N.W.R. to the north a bit. They always had tagged Bighorn sheep in pens when I visited.

I only know about a few birding sites around the place... Y'all will not be seeing any of the vid of me there at Caesar's Palace at a national corporate function in a fn tux! Only time. There will not be film at eleven...

Much of TX including the Edwards Plateau (central 20% of TX), is under this trough that is stuck between the high out west and the Bermuda High over Atlantic. So, rain! We need it badly, got a couple inches last night. I count six big old climax trees dead in the yard from drought. Which is now 5 degrees hotter than it used to be. Currently under rain we are 15=20 below normal and it is fantastic!

happy trails all!

President Biden has capped his extraordinary career of service with a Presidency that has lifted America out of an unprecedented pandemic, created millions of new jobs, rebuilt a battered economy, strengthened our democracy, and restored our standing in the world. By any measure, he has advanced our founders’ charge to build a more perfect union and his own stated goal of restoring the soul of our nation.”

lol…. More people get infected now than they did last year. And other diseases are running rampant because of the influxes at the border and people’s immunity is shot. Biden is on his 3rd round of the Rona after telling us that if you get jabbed you won’t get infected.

Businesses hired back the people they fired and the economy is in the toilet. Regular people can’t afford to buy a house because interest rates are so fcking high. The only people doing well are the rich who are rigging the stock market while more people are pushed into poverty.

Biden is a laughing stock across the world and more of our rights have been taken from us and especially the 1st amendment.

I want want what she’s smoking.

Trump never said that. Democrats and their media made it up. But Goebbells was right. Repeat a lie long enough and people will believe it.

Ahh Vegas. One memorable occasion had stopped by Lake Mead to take a swim.
Met a couple topless working girls on the beach. Said they were hosting a party
at a park in town later and invited me to join. The rangers came up and gave them
a stern warning about public nudity or some such. Spoil sports.
Had the Vega with really big speakers in the hatchback, so showed up at the park and
cranked out some James Gang, Foghat, and whatever else 8 tracks on board.
Cops came around to tell us we would have to shut it down at 10 pm. Spoil sports.
Sure enough, at 10 they came back itching for arrests. We complied and I went back
to the lake to 'sleep' under the stars. The gals were selling window pane to make a few
bucks, but it didn't effect me much. Those were the days my friend.

and your hotel good.
We are headed to Illinois in a week and a half, and I had time today to search and book us into a hotel. I scored the room on the first floor that had a kitchenette.
We will do a lot of cooking, likely save hundreds of dollars by not dining out, and our food will be healthier. And what we enjoy at home. I dreaded the thought of fast food and mediocre restaurants for 6 days. There is only so much you can cook with a microwave only.
Interestingly, Expedia rejected my payment 6 times. I called the hotel directly, made sure the room was available, thinking that was causing the rejection. I told front desk I would book directly if they gave me the same price as Expedia, a 20% discount price. They did. That was a $300 savings.
What will I do with that money I saved? Spend it on the next vacation, OF COURSE!
I was a pretty consistent Black Jack winner. I haven't played in decades, would be too rusty to try.
What shows will you see????
