I Need Some Input on the Mobile Format
Submitted by JtC on Thu, 02/23/2017 - 12:13pm
The last couple of days I've received several complaints about the c99p mobile format. Could those that use mobile devices please relay in the comments specifically what the problem is.
The consensus immediately after the switch to the new site layout led me to believe that the mobile interface was pretty good. What happened and what has changed?
Was the mobile layout better with the old site format? Let me know so I can straighten this out.

recent changes I have noticed on my XP OS
I know it is not a mobile, but my XP computer is cranky because I have it so locked down and watch the packet activity continuously. Some of the issues I have noticed on it might help. Originally the new layout worked great, the last look with the drop columns(which I like)I noticed a few more issues. If my hardwired DSL is acting up I have more problems (might correlate to service fluctuations and changes with a mobile) where a page that had previously loaded becomes blank. Something is trying to refresh, maybe one of the third party items that leaves a cookie in-spite of the no cookies setting on the browser.
If when starting Firefox browser if my homepage caucus99percent.com/diaries does not respond and the browser dialog stays at waiting, I will open a second window to open www.rawstory.com, once data starts transferring from rawstory, c99 will populate its data. This occurs more frequently when there is a youtube video on the page. I think it is related the way it is saved to the diary. It does not happen with every video, but is a consistent problem when opening until the diary scrolls off the first page or in a diary with lots of youtube videos. I have not paid enough attention to ID which diarist which occurs with most often, which would provide further clues.
None of these problems occur on my Windows 7 or 10.
Still yourself, deep water can absorb many disturbances with minimal reaction.

On my laptop
I've experienced the same thing - Opening another page will help c99 to load. Another glitch I've noticed is that the FB link will load some essays and not others. Don't know if it is connected or not. All of this is intermittent. Sometimes the site loads no problem. Other times, loading is a problem.
I don't use my phone for c99 much. The home page fits, but if I open an essay it is too wide for my phone. If I shrink it to fit so I don't have to scroll from side to side, the font size is very, very small.

Yes, I see slow page loads when
there are lots of youtube videos on a essay page. I realize it is not a fault with C99's design -- just a lot of data transfer from youtube to set up the embeds and probably also gated by my comcast bandwidth. I usually just avoid the video heavy diaries ( ) .

Using Phone
version is more landscape like, the input field I'm typing in is 10:4 maybe eve 10:3 landscape so the text is very small.
I think you have to reset that for sure, not sure of anything else... logging and seem to work OK images are handled fairly poorly and the whole input field is really troublesome because it's too wide in landscape mode

Have no wifi. Will corroborate print too wide for android screen. Pinching produces fine print. Not complaining, you understand. Have adjusted. But larger print would be nice.

On my new phone essays are too wide also
Glad others have the same issue and it's not just me losing my marbles lol.
I've tried it both on the default view, and by ticking the desktop version in my browser settings.
Just tested it via Chrome browser and it's same as whatever the default browser is on my Samsung Galaxy Amp Prime - too wide, font too small.
HOWEVER, the Community Content landing page is perfect. It changes once I click on an essay to open and read it. (Comments aren't as bad as actual essay content.)
Will boot up my kindle and see what it's like.
Oh, and I don't know exactly when it changed, but it did, because it was perfect in the beginning (new layout), just not now.
On my kindle, it is immensely better

Johnny I'd concentrate on Android and iPhone Problems...
Resolving those will take care of about 99% of your mobile traffic...
I haven't looked at the mobile site lately because it had that sizing issue, but I'll look again and get back to you.
Try using the "Developer Tools" in the Chrome Browser to emulate different devices, it can also show you code errors causing the problems...
The new format is definitely more usable on mobile devices...

I don't have any problems with the site on my Mac computer
I use my iPad mini in the afternoon and have problems with some essays being to large to see the person's name, but I switch to landscape mode and no problem.
This essay is working fine and I can see everyone's names on the side
I wonder why some essays are larger than this one? The EBs load just like this one did.

Thanks for the input everyone...
I just made a change, can you check again and see if it made an improvement? Be sure to refresh the page so you're not viewing a cached version of the page.
It's now scalable so see if you can resize it to fit.
On my iPhone there is still an issue
In landscape mode, the left edge of the text in essays is cut off so that the first couple of letters on each line are not visible. (This doesn't happen in the comments, which display fine.) Also, while the gesture to zoom in works fine to enlarge the type, the pinch to reduce the screen doesn't work. It makes the whole window smaller and moves it to the center of the screen. Impossible to read. If I use my phone I have to put it in portrait mode to read essays due to this issue, which is also challenging because it's so small. I have to zoom in to see it, then scroll back and forth to read each line.
I use my iPad now instead of my phone to access the site during the workday. No problems on the tablet. At home, I use both desktop and tablet, occasionally my phone but the cut-off text on the left side is frustrating so I mostly avoid using the phone on this site.
I still prefer the new design overall. Appreciate all your work for us JtC!
Eureka! Landscape mode on Android is answer for me!

Both the home page and open essays are too wide for my phone. I have an iphone 6s.

On an iPhone,
Sometimes in portrait format, unpredictably, the lines are so long they aren't really readable without major eyestrain (they're always pretty tiny now), but if I turn it sideways to go to landscape format, the left side of the text is simply gone. I can't change the size or scroll to get it.
Those things work OK on other sites, so it doesn't seem to be my phone. So when I really want to read something, I enlarge portrait format text and scroll back and forth for each line. Or just give up.
