From Ada County Jail: A Letter from Big Bill Haywood

HMP, Moyer Haywood Pettibone, ab 1906_0.png

From the International Socialist Review of June 1906:

Contrary to the popular impression the funds for the defense of the Western Federation officials has not yet reached a sum adequate to meet the pressing needs of the cause. Up to the present time the total funds available do not amount to much, if any more, than $50,000.00, a sum almost ridiculous in comparison with the amounts at the disposal of the state,—or rather of the Mine Owners' Association. Do not let this matter lag for lack of interest. Our comrades' lives are depending upon it.

The following extracts from a letter received recently from Comrade W. D. Haywood contain so much of the spirit of the man that we feel that its publication is permissible. The portions omitted were purely personal in character:

From The Topeka Daily Capital of June 1, 1906:

Sadly, it now appears that Comrade Haywood's trial will not take place until December at the earliest.

CONTINUANCE IN MINERS' CASES
-----

TRIAL OF MOYER, HAYWOOD AND PETTIBONE
GOES OVER.
------
Will Not be Resumed Until Federal Courts Decide
Habeas Corpus Application--Prisoners
Must Remain in Jail.

HMP, Judge Smith, Wilshire Mag, April 1906.png

Caldwell, Idaho, May 31-When the cases of Charles H. Moyer, William D. Haywood and George A Pettibone, charged with the murder of Former Governor Frank Steunenberg came up in the district court today, counsel for the prosecution, acting upon the suggestion made on Tuesday by presiding Judge Frank Smith, filed a formal motion for a continuance on the ground that habeas corpus proceedings instituted in the federal courts in behalf of the defendants are still pending and serve as a bar to further proceedings in the state courts until a decision shall have been rendered by the federal Supreme court. Judge Smith granted the motion and exceptions were entered by the defense and allowed.

An agreement was finally reached as to the duration of the continuance, attorneys for both sides stipulating that the order of the court should provide for a stay of proceedings until the Supreme court shall finally pass on the questions before it relating to these defendants the defendants at the same time excepting to any order of any nature.

The present outlook is that the accused members of the Western Federation of Miners can not be brought to trial before December next.

Those were obviously of the miner's strike in England during the eighties.

I was particularly taken by the one toward the end of the cop and the miner. Looks like they're having a bit of sport with each other. Fortunately someone in the comments asked about it and someone else had an answer. It's a poignant story, but it raises some eerily similar comparisons.

I was only kind of aware of this strike back then, but specifically remember that the Gays showed up in support.

Things here in this country were going into the toidy at the speed of light too. I was interested in the mentions of Maggie Thatcher and how, determined to bust the union, she turned the strike into a class war. Much the same thing happened in this country and that was just too precious to have been coincidence.

I always have a problem holding my rage whenever I think back on the days of St. Ronald and his cohort, "Iron Pants," Thatcher. It was a pivotal turning point in organized labor's history, indeed the history of all people not of the ruling elite, and one that we didn't win by a long shot.

Learning the full story of the strike is a grim lesson in the preferred tactics that have been used against us all ever since.
