So is this the west coast of North or South Island? Beautiful place! A lifelong friend was just there two months ago and saw one type of Kiwi (at night with the red lights, etc.) and
heard another species of them, and he went on a boat and saw a bunch of Albatross.

@dystopian @dystopian

It's the North Island, actually only a 25min. drive over the mountain from home, and an hours drive from central Auckland.

I'll bet your friend saw the Albatross up the coast, a few miles north of this one.

@Shahryar

There are ladder-like stairs going up to the lighthouse, which you can see better in this photo (which for some reason I can't get to stick in this comment) I'll try in a seperate comment.

It's closed to the public because of the danger. Not that I would even consider it.

Being in an environment of wildflowers and fog sounds very appealing to me. I must be a little like a meditation for you to be sitting in a beautiful environment and thoughtfully drawing.

This is like the mitt I used when I played "mitt" with my grandpa starting when I was just a wee miss of 3. It was his mitt when he was just a wee lad and I still have it. Lotsa good memories.

It was PAC Bell then, but it keeps having its name changed. At the back of it there is a place where you can stand and watch the game. I was able to go to 5 games there and more at the A's stadium. Easier to get to and much cheaper.

This is Cruz who dropped the fly ball which ended up costing them the World Series.

at Candlestick Park when I was a kid growing up in the Bay Area. I moved to San Diego long before the current ballpark opened. On TV it looks like a great place to catch a game.

My first game I sat behind home plate. Next was above the dugouts on the 3rd base side and then way up in the seats in this picture close to where they end. Got to see Tony Gwin's last at bat. I'm sure I spelled his name wrong, but I typed out my whole comment in the headline the first attempt and it went out of my brain..

Heh..glad it's Friday.

I used to be a huge baseball fan and always rooted for the giants. Saw an incredible playoff game between them and the dodgers that went 16 innings and was won on a home run. I forgot I had gone more times than I remember. I saw the niners at candlestick. Way cold place that night.

Do you go watch them at Petco? This is a beautiful park too.

Your human subjects are intriguing with the landscapes as backdrops. Wonder if that is a Kiwi version of an 'muricanish treehouse, up there on the peak? No matter, the monkey in me wants to climb the vertical slope and check out the views all around.

Many thanks for sharing the perspectives from the 'other side' of this spinning top! Yes.

I hardly ever feel confident photographing people, but this landscape makes it easy. Thanks for your appreciation. I'm trying to post a photo that shows the lighthouse at the top more clearly, but unsuccessfully so far.

Thanks for the sweet music monkey man.

that could present a problem. If you have to compromise maybe consider later October. There would still be snow in parts, while the first Spring flowering will have begun. Auckland and other parts, mostly North, have things flowering all year.

I'd be there more often if the road was less treacherous, especially so this last two years. It's always been a bit treacherous, being so narrow, with shear drops and unstable ground. Now, with several major slips it is even more so. I hope the money required in engineering will be found to keep the road accessible.

not too much so it wouldn't take that long. However I believe shaharazade would insist I get down immediately! once I got about 5 feet off the ground. Looks like plenty of handholds and footholds. Whether or not it's crumbly, that's something else!

I would think it's also severely frowned upon by whoever's in charge.

because it's off-limit to the public. The rock can be crumbly. The next time I go I'll photograph the rock formation more closely.

Daenerys's picture

I saw these two hermit thrushes the other day:

They are small, sparrow-sized; distinguished from other thrushes by their rusty tail color.

I saw one tree swallow today briefly, and one barn swallow the other day. They should be arriving in numbers any day now. There don't seem to be as many water birds around as there were last year; the ice has been going out on lakes more steadily this year so I guess they are more spread out.

One of my coworkers asked me today if I'd come with her and her nieces who are into birding to the local state park one day and help them look for birds. That would be fun!

Wood Scorpion, a 1" baby. I've been nailed several times. Hot water hot as you can stand it for 5 or 10 minutes real quick at the entry site will do much to denature the proteins in the venom. Works with many protein based venoms.

This is a male Common Grackle. They are iridescent so appear black unless the light source is at the right angle relative to the viewer.

The same bird turned just a little bit and let the sun hit the plumage.
cograck-head.jpg

Eastern Phoebe is a flycatcher, that often nests under eaves of houses. Phoebes constantly dip their tails downward. It was probably the first bird species banded in the U.S. John James Audubon himself caught the one nesting at his place in NJ and tied a piece of silver thread to its leg to see if it was the same bird that came back the next year. It was. This is one of the pair we have nesting here.
