Friday Photography - More Nikau
Submitted by janis b on Fri, 04/09/2021 - 7:56pm
Good evening everyone. I hope the isolation many have endured begins to be replaced with more human contact as Spring opens with fresh life.
We have Autumn rain and wind. I am enjoying my first wood fire of the season. We'll still have warm days and sun ahead, but more and more reduced. All is fine here and the new parents and baby girl are doing well.
Enjoy the weekend!

Thanks for Friday Photos tonight, Janis.
Stay warm in the coming fall and winter, Janis.
Spring is in swing here on the top side of the world.

Hi Social,
The Towhee is a very beautiful illustration. I could imagine it in a children's book. What a gorgeous snail. It made me think of Cinderella stepping out of her carriage ; ). Thank you.
Thank you, Janis.

Hola Social. Great SPTO pic, the feather detail is fantastic.
In fact, they're all fantastic.
Thanks for sharing. Be well and have a good one.

Good evening Janis, thanks for hosting this.
I have an old Lumix with no viewfinder, that relies on a screen like a cellphone has. In bright light (like the desert) one has to aim at where one hopes the target is and shoot. With that excuse made, this is a series of shots f a small flock of bighorn sheep (Borrego) we stumbled across down in the Anza-Borrego Desert at around 3,300 feet up the surrounding mountains:

For me, if you click them they expand, or I can replace
them with larger ones, those ase 400px, I think. So they're now 640 X 480, or should be
Well, it looks like the click takes one to my flickr album, there are a few more there.

Wish I could join you
Hola Dysto - the few previous times we saw them we
needed binos or a spotting scope. This time they were right off the road (Montezuma Grade) and very close, but by the time I could find a place to pull off the road and hike back they were farther away but still ridiculously close. We were heading out and a steady stream of early bird dune buggy enthusiasts were all rushing down the grade with their toys in tow, completely oblivious to the whole happening.
Like you, I've got vast numbers of hours is all the deserts and never saw anything like this.

I am always amazed when watching nature how oblivious the masses are to it.

Funny
"I thought that one boulder looked familiar."
Hi el
Don't they look like they're perfectly harmonised with their environment! So nice for you to have been able to also enjoy the moments.
Thank you for the sharp, clear photos, even while shooting blind.
Hi Janis. They seem totally at ease, comfortable
and happy and are perfectly camouflaged. Usually you see them by accident, in the distance, when one of the innumerable rocks moves just as you're looking in its direction.

That sounds almost like
a magical and comedic moment.
Nice shots of the Bighorn Sheep, EL
I was out there 2 years ago for the super bloom and was lucky enough to get a few shots of the bighorn in Palm Canyon.

Hi dystopian
I'm glad you appreciate its beauty. It’s a very beautiful variety of palm -very sculptural and shapely, and provides much nourishment to first bees, then birds.
Heh, thanks for identifying it, its beautiful but
otherworldly and sci-fi looking in that shot, and I didn't peg it for a palm, though I can see it pretty clearly now that you id it.

This is the same variety, only much older,
probably a hundred years or more older.
It doesn't look a day over 99

Sweet dreams all ...
Hi all,
Just a quickie drive-by... sorry...
The Pink Mimosa was roaring last weekend. Most of the bushes are 3' tall and across, and have hundreds of these flowers right now.
I just finished refurbishing an old 4-holer Purple Martin house and got it up.
Two pair of martin have been coming by daily dive-bombing it, calling, etc., I am still praying to the martin Gods.
The Golden-cheeked Warbler have just returned to their breeding grounds, on the Edwards Plateau of central Texas. They are a threatened species. This male was a half-mile from our place last weekend. Sometimes we get one in the yard.
Hope everyone is doing well, I am busy working and gotta fly.
Take care all!

Pink Mimosa
That sounds like something you drink with Sunday brunch.
Nice shots, dystopian. Hope your bird house attracts a family of Purple Martins.

Thanks for the shots, good stuff!

you are so beautiful to me - thanks to all of your photos

Not only the skies are crying ...
Being on our last legs ... eyo and lotlizard are not posting anymore. I miss them.

Hi mimi
I hope that eyo’s and lotlizard’s absence is temporary, and they’ll be back. It’s awfully quiet here lately. One hopes that in reality those whose voices are silent are faring well enough in life. I sometimes wonder how much of the silence is covid related, and I hope that people are finding comforting solutions to an imposing challenge.
