Friday Night Photos Birds Of A Feather Edition

Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily madness of the crazy world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.

Tonight's birds are from multiple visits to both the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Santee Lakes. The Black-crowned Night Heron was good enough to pose for me on a rainy day at the Safari Park at the end of March. In April sunny blue skies accompanied me for another visit to the Safari Park and two visits to Santee Lakes. I shot the Owl images at Santee Lakes on Easter weekend. Two days later they were gone.

Love the owl shots.
The almost angry expression
on their faces could be intimidating.
We've had a few hooting here as of late.
You capture the essence of the birds very nicely.
Thanks!

I've been hearing them at night for years. Never saw them during the day. I was overjoyed when I finally got a chance to photograph them during the daylight hours.

Thanks for the great owl photos. In the second photo exposing the underside of the wings, it looks like there are also eyes.

Hi SP,

Great bird photos man!

A fair number of owls get fairly diurnal during breeding season. All those mouths to feed. Great Horns fledge the natal tree as soon as they can fly, and generally still have a fair bit of down showing. These look a bit early, but maybe in a couple days they could fly. They have a whistled ascending note they make which is the begging 'feed me' call. Follow that to run them down.

At a lot of marinas in America, and certainly many in socal, you can often walk right up to Black-crowned Night-Heron. Especially if one with any kind of bait tank.

I apologize for not being around much, it is very hard to read and reply with my vision impairment.
Can't even see the pix posted clearly as they deserve. Can barely use uploader, etc.

I have taken a few pix this spring though. At high mag I can still sorta do it, though processing is questionable.

Here are the compulsory annual spring Yellow Warbler in the birdbath photos.

This male Blue Grosbeak sang territorially here for 6 weeeks, and the females must have kept going, as it left last week after not attrackting a mate.

Thanks for the great photos SP!

And the OT. Tommy James and Shondells were great. I think they were big supporters of Hubert Humphrey's 68 campaign?

Happy trails all!

Good to have you back. Sorry to hear you're still having vision problems. Are you going to be able to get the problem corrected any time soon? Vision problem or not your bird photos look great.

@Socialprogressive Hi SP,

Sorry I had to fly last night...

Yes they can fix it. ?They could not do the first eye a couple weeks ago, as my blood pressure was too high. For anesthesia and for proper healing. So now I have to get that down so they can do it, before i am blind. The score so far is 7 months sice I started persuing treatment, my bank is a thousand dollars lighter, and I have gotten nearly nowhere, except perhaps my blood pressure is higher, and I know about that now. And I likely went from not existing medically, to my personal health data being sold to any that want them...

Thanks for the kind words man! Not to mention the OT and great pics! Smile

happy trails!

I'd love to join the party at your place. Those lively little warblers are so inviting. They must cheer you up.

Wishing you all the best in restoring your keen sight.

What varied personalties your birds express, from graceful and sweet to penetratingly intense. How nice that you got to see mama owl and her little ones in the daylight. Mama owl is certainly concentrated on what’s going on around her. Don’t take it personally that she’s giving you the side-eye ; ).

When you hear them at night, do they sound close enough to go out with a flashlight to look for? A couple times a Ruru (Owl) came and sat on the railing in my vision. All lights inside were turned off, and only the outside lights left on, which attracted the Ruru to the moths flying around the light.

I enjoyed hearing that song again, and the wonderful visuals with it.

@janis b
they're nearby but usually they're to far away. I've never used a flashlight to try and find them in the trees.
It must have been a real treat to see the Ruru up close.

I hope I can keep it nice and flourishing. We'll see. It's all very unfamiliar to me, but I think I will enjoy the effort.

@janis b Hi Janis,

The terrarium looks great! Will be neat to watch it grow.

I had a few over the years. My fav was the one with the Poison Arrow Frogs from So. America. The black and red ones, I think Dendrobates auratus maybe. Psychedelic frogs. You can look but you better not touch with an open wound. Nowadays they have captive bred ones that are essentially non-toxic. Have had a bunch for lizards and small snakes.

Can';t wait to see it grow!

Happy trails!
