Friday Photography

Just a quick post tonight. I have a longer essay prepared but I will post that next week as I am currently too tired to format it. The subject is wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic and way of being that has very close ties with Zen Buddhism. Anyway, here are a few pics that I took with that philosophy very much in mind. Much more next week.
No assignment this week but use this thread to post anything at all - photos, comments, thoughts etc.

evening steve...
i'm looking forward to your wabi-sabi essay, sounds interesting.
Hi Joe
I have a feeling that it is going to get another edit or three before next week. The subject has interested me for some time - it is a philosophy but it really fits well with photography (non-commercial/stock that is). It is complex though and every time that I think I'm beginning to understand it a little I read something or see something that shifts my thinking.
judging by your photo I suspect that the concept is not a new one to you
Oh, and hope you are enjoying your vacation.

heh...
the vacation was great, but is sadly over.
i snapped that picture at yellowstone and when you mentioned wabi-sabi, it sprang to mind immediately. the concept isn't entirely new to me, but it is one that i have barely scratched the surface of understanding at a verbal level. i have seen a bit of artwork and digested that over the years such that i find myself occasionally incorporating some recognizable visual concepts into my compositions, but i have read very little on the subject.
It's a tough subject
in some ways - like trying to wrestle with water. I first came across it when I was reading about the Japanese tea ceremony. Unfortunately the self improvement internet marketing crowd have started to see $ in the concept so now it is a little harder to sort the good stuff from the BS.
I find that its a subject best approached randomly. A good phrase says as much as an 5,000 word essay - I came across these thoughts the other day.

We planted a new tree this week - a silver spire clump birch (I think its called.) Our seventh on our small town center lot. Always makes me feel good for some reason.

Stunning work Knucklehead
I've been doing some landscaping on our tiny lot over the past week - some new flower beds, bit of patio work and some other bits and pieces,. Nothing on this scale though - the paving (and everything else) is beautiful.
-I'll post some photos of my efforts tomorrow if I get a chance

Very impressive
I can't decide if I like the stone or the wood work the best. Beautiful job.

More of my above post
I had to divide the above post into two since it would not accept it at one posting.

Koi are creepy/cute. Is that facestone veneer
on the posts? I do rough dry-laid myself. I have a vision of a part-circle of resident stone set horizontally in the ground. I have thought of an easy way to lay one out!

Not sure if this qualifies - maybe a little...
I saw this at a clients front door and thought it was pretty cool.

I`d say.

Hi Bollox Ref
My thinking: I know that there is a Bree in Belgium but that doesn't look much like Belgium - never heard of Weathertop. Then it dawned on me LOTR - I'm a bit slow tonight.

Definitely not Belgium
Wyoming in fact. But the low hills that come close to the road in the distance reminded me of Tolkien.

Whoah! Thanks to all for their contributions
this evening, and, to Steve for providing C99'ers with a regular meeting place to enjoy the extraordinary photographic talents of many of our members.
Knuck, agree with Steve that your work is stunningly beautiful--both your photography, and your pavilion woodworking and construction. Wow!
