Friday Night Photos Summer Fun Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 07/07/2023 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
It's that time of year again. Time for that annual rite of summer, the county fair. Every year the fair in San Diego begins in late May or Early June and concludes with fireworks on the 4th of July.
The fairs version of Walmart greeters
A little practice between shows
Nothing but food from here to the Ferris wheel
This year the even had a small butterfly exhibit

Where was the picture taken
of the horse under western saddle? It looks like an Arabian.

Oops.
I know San Diego, but was it an Arabian breed event?
Anyway, anyone could find some way to have fun at that fancy fair!

Hi, OTC
I must confess, I don't know anything about horses. It's a beautiful horse whatever type it is.
I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.
Usully at horse shows,
They also tend to groom them for the tail to be on the ground.
Anyway, gorgeous bay horse, and the rider has what would be described as a "good seat". His boot heels are the closest body part to the ground. If shit hits the fan and the horse unseats him, he won't get his boot caught in the stirrup and dragged. Heels down saves lives.

I don't know if these will help ID the type of horse
Here are two more horses that were in the arena at the same time as the the one you asked about.

Hi otc
Thanks for the horse information, it's interesting.
Arabians are short, usually no more than an inch over the
Their faces typically are not straight, eyes to nose. They typically curve inward. That was why I asked if they were Arabians. However, it has been at least 20 years since I bred them, so the nose and face may have been selectively bred out as a trend.
I could go on all day and all night about breed characteristics.
The world would not be what it is without horses. And it is not their fault, but how they were used. I blame the ancient Greeks. Native Americans used them for movement, then, voila, battle. So, I blame them, also. Lest we forget, the Mongols.

I've only known a few horse people
but the dedication and love they have for their horses is outstanding to me.
janis b,
Get a kiss from a horse, you know you are a good person.
My paternal grand father was a horse trader, my Dad was US Army Horse Cavalry until it disbanded, and he became infantry, rode motorcycles. He taught me all things horses, both Western and English. The last horse he rode was mine, a horse I bought at an auction, trained it in basic dressage, to resale it. Dad was 82. The horse was just perfect.

You express your love for them so poignantly
It sounds like relationships with horses can be great teachers about life, from the beginning to the end of life. What a nice gift for your father.
He put my brother's little girl
Arabians aren't popular here because of lack of burst of speed to catch a calf. They are super sensitive to sights and sounds, and spook a lot. It takes a calm rider to keep them calm.
But once you connect with them, they are the horses that come into the tent, as they do in Saudi Arabia. One of mine actually pushed open my front door and came into the living room! That was prior to me adding on my front porch.
The horse entry hastened that porch add on!
They become family and loved ones.
No Arabians, no US wild mustang horses, no Thoroughbreds.

You can talk to me about horses
as much as you like. Your stories are very engaging and full of feeling and illustration.
I'm a fellow horse freak, too, OTC.

Like you, I was a bare back rider
the horses hated saddles and mouth bit bridles
but a noose around the nose didn't steer very well
we mostly had quarter horses around then
cheers
Not horse-competent at all
Probably should have ended up with a broken leg at least last time I was on one.
But one thing about those spaghetti westerns that sort of nagged at me was that the horses tended to not look quite right for what was supposed to be the 'Old West'.

The big, stocky horses of the Wild West came mostly from Texas. Some originated in New England, but it was Texas that gave us Quarter Horses.

Speaking of, I just discovered an extraordinary cartoonist....

Hi, Moonbat
Thanks for the link. Ahmed Falah's work reminds me of Mr Fish.

thanks for the fun shots of the sun diego glow
doesn't get much better than this!
cotton candy and corn dogs
it's a fair representation you have captured
Hi, QMS.
It seemed like everywhere you turned someone was selling corn dogs, but I don't remember seeing anyone selling or eating cotton candy. Kind of strange now that I think about it.
Thanks for the Jamies tune.

Hi Social
Great photos and selection of attractions at the fair. I especially loved the soft, sweet smile you caught on the young boy with butterflies.
Another rainy day. Even though the sun makes an appearance once in a while, it is so fleeting that it’s no more than a tease.
Have a good weekend all
whenever raindrops meld into
teardrops, I find your photos capture that feeling
no matter the color of the eyes
Hi Q
The melancholic in me generally finds comfort in the rain. I'm sure you understand that feeing. Rain has taken on a slightly different nature since the slip. I still find comfort and beauty in the rain and mist, but the heavy rains don’t feel as innocent anymore.
I could use a longer dose of sunshine. Maybe it's time to consider a short get-away to a not too distance tropical island ; ).
Thanks for the sweetly sad song.
I am not a c & w fan, but that Willie

Hi, Janis
As soon as the boy saw me point the camera at him he put on the smile. Hope you get some sun soon

I think he must have felt happy
and proud of having the butterflies attracted to him, and then you recognising the moment.
Hi Janis,
take care, hope you dry out and see the sun soon!

That trunk belongs to a very old Kanuka tree that has been leaning further and further from a vertical position with every year. With the landslip it is now leaning against an ancient, massive Puriri which is holding it up. Kanukas don’t have the strongest root system, but they fall apart in pieces and make the hottest firewood. They are the sibling of the Manuka tree.
I just checked the humidity, it’s 88%. I think the brief interludes of sun contribute a bit to keeping the saturation down from 99%. You always inspire me to learn. Now I am reading about the relationship between rain and humidity.
I hope you and your creatures are not suffering too much from the sun. Our climates would benefit from exchanging their excess ; ).
Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Looks a nice day at the fair. When I was a child it was the L.A. Co. Fair in Pomona, runs mid-Aug. to mid-Sept. Hot but great farm animals. And once the Nacional Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, which was awesome. At some point in the mid-70's there was a Unicycle around the hippie-house (my residence) which I learned to ride, actually quite well, I could just sit on it like it was a chair. Rode it around Redondo Beach a bit... LOL Back then every day was a fair for me. Other days it was a gas-engine powered skateboard. Which could even move my carcass uphill! Was illegal though. I was once an outlaw. Anyway...
A couple warblers at the bird bath: Black-and-white Warbler on left, Yellow-throated Warbler right.
This is the Black-and-white between thorough dunkings.
and during one...
Hope all are well! Have good ones!

Wonderful warblers dystopian
Your photos are so animated. Are there cuter or more sweet sounding birds than warblers? I just love them.
I think I get the picture ... you as the intrepid and fun spirited outlaw ; )
the warbler in the bath
is an amazing study in black and white
with the ripples on the surface
draws the eye into contrast
thanks dysto
Hi, dystopian
Sounds like some wonderful memories from your youth. Nice shots of the Warblers.

One rewarding thing
being on Twitter (2.0) is it's being a veritable goldmine of memes/quotes. A few selected recent gems:

but on a somewhat optimistic note
Thanks for the county fair pics - some fond memories...
Hi, Blue Republic
Love the memes. I'll be adding them to my meme library.

I thought this one would be appropriate, given AOC's endorsement of Biden:
"They'll have more success if they run as Democrats." Uh-huh.

Hi, Cassiodorus
Great meme. It sums up the democratic party in four words. As for AOC, she's like all the rest. All sound and no substance.

Greetings people from the slowly sinking Sandbar
of the SE. We are getting our daily rains now which we need. However, we're facing the teeth of the storm season: August through October. Keeping fingers and toes crossed, for sure. Always enjoy my weekly romp here. Rec'd!
