I wonder how many miles I walked on this trail over the decades I walked it. I had 5 options on which direction I wanted to travel. This was such a great area for walking until the city put in this bike trail. I kept pulling out the stakes, but they built it anyway.

This was one of the nice things about Modesto! Kinda had to look for them since I heard people calling it the armpit of California... but it was a great place to walk.

This is Standing Winecup, that is pollen scattered about the petals.
This is a Sulphur-tipped Clubtail. One family of dragons, the Gomphids, the eyes are not fused and instead are seperate, like this.
American Lady (formerly Virginia Lady) sister taxa to the abundant Painted Lady.
Grasshopper Sparrow, though they eat a lot of them, it is named after its song, which is a trilled buzz much like a grasshopper.

This is a Monarch (first photo below). They are large black and orange jobs. The ones west of the Rockies winter along the CA coast, their population is in near freefall, decling 90% in the last 30 years. The eastern population is the one that winters in Mexican highlands, migrates back north in spring to lay a set of eggs and die. Those larvae eat and pupate quickly and immediately move north all the way to Canada, lay eggs and die. Those larvae eat and pupate quickly and do not breed, they migrate south to Mexico for the winter and lay eggs when they return again in spring. So it is 3 generations that make the whole loop and cycle. The eastern Monarchs are also in trouble but having a slight rebound this year and we are optimistic. Widespread use of Roundup has been a major problem for them.
This is the dorsal or upperside of an American Lady (ventral shot in-hand above), the very closely related Painted Lady is considered by some to be the most abundant butterfly in the world, looks very similar. It undertakes major migrations in spring northward, some years by the millions, especially in the southwest U.S.
What's the difference between the painted lady and monarchs or are they the same? The bird looks so cuddly.

Spring
The first picture makes me miss the trees looking like that already. You can see so much further when they don't have their leaves.
Spring sprung so hard here that it knocked it straight into summer.
