Friday Night Photos Grudge Match Edition
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
A few weekends ago I went to Barona Dragstrip, a 1/8th mile track located on the Barona Indian reservation. Even though it's been years since I've been to a race track, you never forget the smell of racing fuel and tire smoke. It brought back memories of Saturday nights at the local 3/8th mile oval track pit crewing for a friend that raced in the late model sportsman class. There was a wide variety of cars from old to new and dedicated race cars to daily drivers. All the racing is bracket racing so the cars are racing the clock and not each other. Most of the cars topped out in the upper 90s to low 100s mph wise, with times between 6-7 seconds. The fastest car I saw made a pass in 5.6 seconds at 120 mph.

Sitting in the stands watching people destroying old clunker cars just for the hell of it. I’ve never understood the fascination of watching cars speed around a track. Horses yes…cars not so much.
I took Sam up to the mountains to play in the snow and see if any of the lower campgrounds were open yet. The ones really low got wiped out by the river during the melt and the upper ones still have lots of snow in them. I’m sure that Xmas meadows is still buried. They are just now clearing the snow off the road up to it.
But good news for the Great Lake. The area just before the marina was just dirt last year when I crossed the causeway. This is how I remember it from my youth. In fact lots of times the water was close to going over it.
It looks like my walk to the water will be a half hour closer. Yippee!
The road to the left is how I get to my camp spot when I go out for thanksgiving. The bay is just right of the mountain at the
bottomtop left. Last year I tried spring camping and got run out by the millions of gnats. How bad were they you ask?Bug spray doesn’t keep them off you and they are so small that they can come through the screen on my trailer. Sam turned white 30 seconds after going outside. We boogied.
Snow Basin ski resort where I grew up skiing. It used to be Utah’s best kept secret until the Olympics came to Utah. $8 bucks for full day. Now it’s closer to $100 or more.
We used to hike up to the top just to the left of the big peak and up to the towers every June and slide down in garbage bags. Fun times until you come to the rocks. They don’t show very well after the upload but they are there.

Just down from the towers is a huge waterfall that I used to hike to once a year. Absolutely beautiful scenery.
And the hills are alive with mustard seed. I couldn’t stop to get a photo of a ton of them with the mountain in the background. But just stunning.

It wasn’t till August that we could get in the back country and it rained every weekend too. This year we are getting lots of rain again, but it’s finally going to clear up next week.
The Utah congress members are throwing lots of money at solving the great salt lake problem, but the money is going to the water managements which want to make sure that foreign country’s agriculture gets as much water as they want to grow crops to send back home. Biden’s water deal for the Colorado river didn’t take any water from foreign countries… who thought it was a good idea to grow water thirsty crops in a desert? Oh yeah and the legislature didn’t make sure that the water we the little people saved went into the lake. Millions of dollars for things that don’t address the problem! Yeah we’re pissed.

Great pics SD! Beautiful places! Except the gnats. In Mexico the noseeums can fly through mosquito netting. Pray for wind, camp on the beach where it always is. There are few things as interesting to watch as a human doing the mosquito dance.

True…. During the gnat invasion I watched a pair of joggers running down the road and then quickly turning around and swatting at the damn gnats that were flocking all over them. The picture doesn’t even capture how bad they were. There was a sign saying that they had hatched, but I thought how bad can they be? I found out….I paid for 4 days and bugged out after 2. They don’t bite, but they fly into your hair and all over your body.
I dreaded moving back to Utah, but now that I’m here I can’t imagine moving away again. I missed the seasons, but missed the mountains most of all. It takes less than 30 minutes to get to the backside of the mountain. 5 minutes to be in the foothills. But I’m thinking of going to California and seeing the ocean. Maybe hit Bodega Bay and going up to Patrick's Point in Eureka.

I went up the canyon to the east of the photos about 40 miles east of Ogden and it’s been 40 years since I was up where we camped all the time. They just cleared the snow there last week and it’s going to be some time till the campgrounds are open. I’m having the trailer ready for use Monday and we will be off and hopefully I can plan on going somewhere fun. I once dreamed of camping my way to the east coast, but will have to have someone water my plants and yard while I’m gone. But gas prices have put a crimp in my plans…they are over $4 here! Gnarling and gnashing my teeth…oh wait.

One of my most memorable experiences was camping across America in the mid-80s. I'm glad that I had that experience when I did.

I really enjoyed the drag racing video. I couldn’t help but wonder whether the new or old won in the end because the video didn’t show the finish line … but the starts were great!
I occasionally hear ‘boy racers’ in this sleepy little place between 1-3am. The road is narrow, curved and hilly.

Shots 1,3,5 were shot at 1/500. Shots 2,7,8 were shot at 1/200 and shots 4,6 were shot at 1/125.

Thanks SP! WOW, wayyyyyy slower than I thought... but noted the depth of field so figured it must have been slower than I was thinking... Depends on what results you desire of course... Often for moving subjects I like high shutter speeds for it making the depth of field shallow, thereby blurring the background. And hopefully focusing on the object of intent. Anyway, your shots are fantastic! Thanks!

A lot of things
factor into depth of field such as focal length of the lens, distance between lens, subject and background, and most importantly lens aperture. Shutter speed plays no part in the depth of field equation.

I see you are set to aperture priority. I totally disagree that shutter speed has nothing to do with depth of field. Aperture changes with shutter speed. How are they not connected? If on any programmable camera you set shutter speed as priority instead of aperture priority, what changes? The aperture. So you can control aperature with shutter speed, which controls depth of field. A picture taken at a faster shutter speed requires a bigger aperture, which reduces depth of field. They are intrinsically connected, shutter speed and aperture. You can't separate them. Sure sensor or film sensitivity affects ranges but the principles of photography do not.

You are correct that
a camera set to automatic mode or shutter priority mode will change the aperture as shutter speed changes which in turn changes depth of field. Conversely, when a camera is set to aperture priority mode or manual mode, changing shutter speed will not change aperture or depth of field, which is what I based my statement on since I do all of my shooting in manual mode.

Does it just not load?
I’ve had this problem numerous times and I think it has something to do with the whole site just not loading. Many times I click on the site or a comment and it just doesn’t load up. A few minutes later it’s loading just fine, but it’s frustrating when I’m trying to get the uploaded to pop up. I open another tab and see if the site is loading slowly….this doesn’t help much, but it might explain why you had a problem trying to post photos.

I spent the afternoon
with a woman photographer and all-around special person. We were recently introduced. Her life-long work was amazing to see. Her vast exploration of photography and story-telling through the decades (including colour photograms) was mind blowing.

Beautiful photograph Janis! It is great to travel around as you learn lots from that. It is equally great to observe one place for an extended period. This also teaches one lots. Think Walden Pond. Or Sand County Almanac (a fav. book). I spent a decade traveling, to learn different things. Presently I am two decades into sedentary, and have learned a mountain of things I never could have guessed. By watching one place long and hard.

the name. I was born in DC, so spent part of my childhood in the MD suburbs. I remember listening to my AM clock radio for the tunes. They had a bunch of ads for funnycar racing in the western border of the state. I looked up funnycars and saw that they were the junk heaps that raced around and smashed into each other. I was like---whatever. LOL.
