Saturday Open Thread - 8/8/26: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people! I hope you are all in fine fettle this hot Saturday morning!
Well, I wrote last Saturday about my faux paus in wearing a full frontal nudity tee shirt to work. Da Vinci, doncha know! Thank goodness, no children were harmed. To atone, this work week I wore what young folks call frumpy, and what we oldsters call slouchy and comfy. Outdoor clothing for fishing and hiking, and safaris. Clothes that have sunscreen and mosquito repellent infused into the fabric to help you to get back home without malaria or worse, and not scaring off lions and cheetas because of their color.

Anyone think that sudden migrant influx to Cuenta was organic?

Decades ago, the father of a school mate told me that he had never known anyone who could express so many things with the word, "shit".
Well, it caught on.
This is an open thread, friends.
Go for it!

Good morning, good people!
This OT is absolutely Odds and Ends. Classic template to give you the green light to drop any and all posts about any and all thins you wish to share with your friends here.
FWIW, we have enough food for a year. You just never know what is going to happen with the food supply. 3 or 4 more items, we will just shop for the groceries for the week. Or, eat our stock if the stores shut down.
Meanwhile, TACOS!
Ok, friends. Your turn!

Good morning...
Having plenty of food is reassuring. I just got back from the grocery myself. This is the weekend of the big yard sale...the world's longest. You know buy someone else's junk and make it your own.
So at any rate trade day was thin, everyone was set up on the mountain. My buddy's usually make good money. Much of what they buy at trade day is purchased in order to sell on the big yard sale. Usually it is hot as hell, but it was a pleasant 67F this AM.
Hope all is well, and everyone has a good weekend. Thanks for the OT!

Good morning, LO!
My home and garage are filled with items I have bought at yard sales and flea markets. One man's trash is another man's treasure is a truism. I have never shopped a yard sale to find a particular item. The items found me.
There are days when browsing the net feels like I am addicted to doom porn, but it is absolute truth to say we had a global fertilizer at fall planting season. It is true that diesel price has increased, might eventually reach a shortage situation, and farm equipment runs on diesel. So do delivery trucks. To think food at the grocery store will be abundant this winter is not realistic.
To ignore these critical facts and just live for today might put you in the position where you can't live that following day. The happiest day is knowing you will be happy and secure in the immediate future.
A client, during high school, worked for her neighbor who conducted weekly yard sales, trading a lot of Native American jewelry. This client had planned on retirement income from selling her jewelry collection on ebay. She had pieces from the 1700s. Hurricane Harvey caused her home to flood and she lost the entire collection.
Enjoy your enviable weather, dear friend!

Hey, good morning
.
speaking of foodstuffs, have you seen the kerfuffle about
trumpet's 'affordability' drive and $20 burritos? Kinda a joke
I think. My burritos cost about $3 all up to make.
7 Hacks To Obtain A Burrito For Less Than $20
https://babylonbee.com/news/7-hacks-to-obtain-a-burrito-for-less-than-20?
Another thing came up regarding Cuba. China gifted 5000 solar systems to help
with their electrical needs. Meanwhile there are 400 containers awaiting delivery
being blockaded by US. Even as US puts more sanctions on the country.

Getting back to foodstuffs - trumpet is sanctioning avocados produced in Mexico.
WTF? I like avocados with my burritos.

Thanks for the OT!

Good morning, Cap'n!
Burritos? $20? LEARN TO COOK!
Communism is the cause of Cuba's failing country. To even consider it is because he have starved and strangled them with blockades and sanctions since the 1950s is pure bull shit. See what communism has done to China! I mean, it is obvious! If Rubio had his way, every Cuban on that island would be dead.
And he is a top contender to run for president. A good hearted man.
Uh, what is suspicious about Mexican avocados? Trump needs to clarify this. (Oh, wait! He isn't competent. Shit!)
Thanks for the Babylon Bee article. Too funny, friend!

Good morning otc, thanks for the OT and the tunes. I assume
that a $20 burrito is in a nice sit down joint somewhere up north. Not much of a fan of burritos myself, should be street food anyway, but not too big on tortillas de harina, make mine maiz. That said, I do do enchiladas sometimes at sit down joints, but that's a different story.
The Guardian says:
Seems seriously bassackwards to me. Trump can end the war at any time, just walk away and call off the dogs. Not sure if Iran is really spending energy scheming about the midterms, that's Israel's job. Most importantly, there have been no negotiations, the orange dotard can stop pretending there are at any time, it has nothing to do with Iran, they're not the ones keeping up the pretense.
Skipping farmers' market today, we still have a ton of produce and veggies from last weeks trip and, after canning 6 jars of tomatoes the other day still have a counter covered with them and more on the vine. My week to cook starts tomorrow and has to involve tons of tomatoes without getting boring, so, chili, pizza, spaghetti, BLTs, etc. The real problem will be replenishing our bread supply, because high temps will continue, making it undesirable to indulge in serious baking, especially since I'm already somewhat committed to making an apricot galette for deserts for the week. (we still have many jars of canned apricots that we've got to use up soon,)
I finally have to go "buy new wood" as my wife put it. I endlessly re-use the wood from stuff I've taken apart to dispose of and my stash of scrap and leftovers to the extent that my next project absolutely requires at lest a full sheet of plywood and some real wood that I can rip into some structural pieces, So, still have to run out and get shit today.

Good afternoon, el!
Careful on the shopping trip, friend! Heart attacks can occur at lumberyards from sticker shock.
Tariffs on Canadian lumber is showing up at the lumberyards here, as we knew it would.
I am a white maize tortilla person. Not a burrito or enchilada fan. When I eat at Mexican restaurants owned and staffed with Mexican immigrants, they light up with smiles when I tell them I want corn tortillas with my tacos or fajitas. They congratulate me for knowing how those dishes are meant to be prepared.
Hmmm...baking bread does heat up the house. Hmmm...
I know the trap of having an abundant vegetable or fruit yield. Like, how many ways do you cook peaches? Yes, you can get tired of tomatoes in every meal. I guess tossed salads here and there, assuming you can find lettuce that won't cause explosive shitting. (Notice how shit is the word of the day?)
Well, happy shopping and cooking, my friend. I am counting the days when a chilly night comes. That is when we will be eating chili.

has been an inserted noun/verb/adjective into every sentence spoken in this house since we watched that comedy skit yesterday.

Decades ago I saw a performance which, iirc, was also reduced
to writing. The speakers thesis was that "fuck" was the most important, useful and all purpose word in the language, being a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, an interjection or exclamation, and an expletive, with a lot of exemplars in the course of the explanation.

fucking thesis, friend!
I'd be stupid as shit to even try!

There are multiple shocks available at the lumberyard these
days. Somebody has been manipulating gravity, possibly so that you get way less flour in a 5 pound bag or something. A full sheet of 1/2 inch plywood is way the hell heavier that it was 10 or 20 years ago.

Well,
I bet it is the glue. Nothing to do with, oh, aging, for example.

Somebody hit it on the nail in a video about Feynman,
AI is simply pattern matching, no more, it can't understand what the patterns mean or even how they really work, only that they are what is used.
