Friday Night Photos. Can't let a great thing miss a week.

Such a flirt. Female Red Wing Blackbird.

I never realized how beautiful of a bird the female of this species was. I plan on devoting much more time photographing her and her kin as they are constant company on the river.
Iv'e spent almost a week of time on a little bit of the River Raisin. Every time I go there's something new.

Daenerys's picture

I finally got the pheasant portrait I've been after.

The other day I was treated to three (!!!) male indigo buntings visiting my feeders!

Also a lifer; never thought I'd get to see one here! (Now let's try for a scarlet tanager.) It was funny because I was about to take that feeder down because nothing was really eating at it, but then I changed my mind and took the peanut feeder down instead since I had gotten a new jelly feeder to put up, and then the buntings showed up shortly after!

A yellow-headed blackbird that briefly sat in a tree:

And our pair of blue-winged teals:

There's them and a pair of mallards on our pond; can't wait to see babies!

I didn't know garter snakes were threatened; thanks Pricknick.

@janis b I'm constantly learning--new species, (eBird is great for learning species around the world with photos) new calls and behaviors. I have recorded 59 species at our place so far, and that isn't nearly all of them. I'm up to 149 recorded total so far on eBird, though I've seen more than that. What will be #150??

Thank you for the wonderful bird photos. I and a friend rescued seven baby ducklings from the street. They were following there mom but surely not going to make it given the traffic. Two could fit in my hand. I threw my vest over them and they kept escaping from the armholes. Pretty funny. We took the to the Native Animal Rescue place and they said they would take them to a water bird rescue center. Really sweet.

I'm not sure if someone just wanted to build it OT if it is actually someone's shelter. There are lots of homeless people staying in this area during the summer.

@magiamma

The plants are usually much bigger and more prolific, but we didn't get much snow this year. Here's the way I remember the area in full bloom. And I should have said "beagle vacuum nose". This is the typical pose for a beagle. Nose down, tail up. Beagles have some of the most sensitive noses in most dawgs. Their ears are long so they can trap scents. True fact.

I am not afraid of snakes. I'm not. So imagine my surprise when I was walking and saw one just after I stepped over it. "Aiiighee, a snake! An effing snake!" In my defense I think it has something to do with some leftover vestigial deep instinct from the caveman days when snakes ate people.

Thanks!

I recently came across a seemingly defunct HD video camera, that couldn't be re-charged, until I worked out how to re-charge it. It takes basic stills too, so I've been pointing and shooting over the last week. Some of the results aren't too shabby (and it's tiny, so easy to transport).

Love yer snakes Pricknick, very cool. Nice Garter, of course lots of types are common, and lots are very local and rare. San Franciso Garter might be the prettiest of them all, and I think very threatened. Janis your scallop warms my cockles... beautiful! Birds are living dinosaurs, and a canary in the coal mine for this 3rd stone from the sun. Great pair of Blue-winged Teal D.; JS I can't believe those Clematis, I have 3 types native where I am and none look remotely like those beauties. Great Wood Duck SP, love those nuptial plumes on the Snowy Egret. The red in lores is called 'high breeding' and only briefly held during maximum hormone production coinciding with mate selection and mating period.

Here's a few more birds, because there aren't enough, and a couple other odds n' sods.
