Father Richard Rohr's Statement on the Sexual Abuse Catastrophe

There are those here who follow Father Richard Rohr who heads the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has made a statement and published it on their website regarding what he calls "the Sexual Abuse Catastrophe."

Even Betty would approve. (I think?)

For you who are interested I encourage you to listen to the short podcast.

He hits the nail on the head in my mind. It is all in "church speak" but probably everyone can get the gist of it. He says "lamentations" "repentance" and "get rid of celibacy."

Actually, I like his call on celibacy. He says celibacy's a charism, a gift of God. And the Church, which should be taking orders from God, is trying to give orders to God by mandating it for the Church's priesthood.

Father Rohr is right: one cannot mandate a Divine gift! And it's high time the Church stopped doing so.

The "lamentation" phase is occurring now, with the exposure of the victims and the crimes to public scrutiny. Repentance will have to include permanent removal of all the guilty from all public ministry. And the Church is going to have to come to terms with Father Rohr's call for authentic sexuality, too -- bye bye homophobic doctrine and practices.

but I am not sure that removing celibacy will stop child abuse. Still it is good that he is starting the conversation. I like that he says, "you can disagree with me if you like".

My speakers are broken so, unfortunately, I wasn't able to listen to Rohr's statement. I can only surmise from the comments that this was about celibacy. The statistics on child sex abuse in general are "1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse." http://victimsofcrime.org/media/reporting-on-child-sexual-abuse/child-se... I've read that girls are mostly attacked by step-fathers, uncles, family friends. And, as we know, both boys and girls have been attacked by sports coaches. So this has nothing to do with "celibacy." But as regards the Church, what celibacy has engendered is the ultimate "good old boys club" of avowed bachelors who keep each other's secrets, protect each other first and show little concern for others.
As regards all the other opinions floating around these days on the media, if they aren't holding the pope accountable, they're missing the mark. A fish rots from the head down. Only the pope can put in the necessary steps to stop child abuse worldwide and he could have done it from day one of his pontificate.

I did listen to Rohr. He is conflating celibacy and sexual abuse. Fine to talk about celibacy and its repercussions. But celibacy does not drive one to be a sexual predator. It is not an equivalency.

Rather sexual perpetrators seek out situations where they can take advantage. There is a reason that those convicted of sexual abuse are not allow to live within some miles of public schools.

The stats I know are that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 7 boys are sexually abused. Those are from 2002. I am not up to date on current stats but cannot see how they could be better.

94% of offenders are male and 94% of the abused are female (Finkelhor & Russell, 1984). Not sure how that holds up in the Catholic Church.

Certainly if perpetrators are not members of the family they are well known to the family. In a 1969 Children's Division of the American Humane Association study of 1,100 cases of child sexual abuse in a borough of New York, they found that 75% of the offenders were known to the children and their families. 27% of the offenders were members of the immediate household and another 21% were relatives who were not living in the home.

Repeating some of these stats because they need to be talked about...

He talks about celibacy, but says the church's doctrine on sexual issues is screwed up, especially the male dominance factor.

He calls for lamentation, repentance, and reform.

Predators don't need to be celibate to be predators, but I agree that celibacy needs to go.

As far as the statistics, they'r all horrendous and make the same point that this terrible tragedy is too common. "94% of offenders are male and 94% of the abused are female (Finkelhor & Russell, 1984). Not sure how that holds up in the Catholic Church." It holds up especially for the right-wing orthodox who have been trying to conflate pedophilia and homosexuality since day one of the scandal in 2002.

I'm sorry I can't listen to the podcast. But Rohr should know that the only way to reform "male dominance" is the ordination of women and women in the hierarchy. That's not going to happen in our lifetime.
