The fall of the Wall, expulsion the Medici, and more.

"Casting out nines" is a quick way of testing the calculations of sums, differences, products, and quotients of integers. It was known as long ago as the 12th Century. It is also the basis of a lot of "magic" tricks and puzzles. There used to be some based on the rotary phone dial too. Essentially, They are modulo 9 math.

On 11-09-1494, the Family de' Medici were expelled from Florence. Think about it - 1 percenters run out of town by the hoi polloi! The expulsion only lasted until 1512, however, and there were special circumstances. It would be harder to do today. They produced 4 popes, doubling the meagre two popes produced by their enemies, the Borgias. Verily it was said, "Forsooth, it is far easier for a wealthy banker to become pope than for a poor man to pass theu the eye of a camel."

Having started in the textile trade, they amassed enough moola to start their own bank and became among the wealthiest people in Europe. They gained control of Florence and are credited with allowing humanism and art to flourish. They expanded their fiefdom to all of Tuscany which eventually became a Grand Duchy. They did just peachy until Lorenzo died and his incompetant son Piero came to power and drove the people to expel them. Today, the incompetant scions of one percenters run for higher office (potatoe) and sometimes achieve same (is our children learning?). Hence, there may not be much we can learn from studying these folks further.

11-02-1989 was the date of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Communist-controlled East Germany opened checkpoints in the Berlin Wall allowing its citizens to travel to West Germany. This key event led to the eventual reunification of East and West Germany, and fall of communism in eastern Europe including Russia.

Contrary to the revisionist narrative pushed by the GOP and others, Ronald Reagan not only did not push it down with his bare hands, but he had nothing whatsoever to do with it. He did at one point indulge in some histrionics aimed at the US citizenry and putatively directed at another person who likewise had nothing to do with it. Some assert that histrionics was RRs sole competency, while others assert that he had none, being a terrible actor too. Worse yet, he dumped Jane Wyman for Nancy. Many such voted for him anyway because in the US party affiliation trumps everything else. Blockquote from Wikipedia for 11/02: Berlin Wall

What really happened was that East Germans were exiting East Germany in droves via Hungary and Czechslovakia. A bit more from Wikipedia:

The wave of refugees leaving East Germany for the West kept increasing. By early November refugees were finding their way to Hungary via Czechoslovakia, or via the West German Embassy in Prague. This was tolerated by the new Krenz government, because of long-standing agreements with the communist Czechoslovak government, allowing free travel across their common border. However this movement of people grew so large it caused difficulties for both countries. To ease the difficulties, the politburo led by Krenz decided on 9 November to allow refugees to exit directly through crossing points between East Germany and West Germany, including between East and West Berlin. Later the same day, the ministerial administration modified the proposal to include private, round-trip, travel. The new regulations were to take effect the next day.

Günter Schabowski, the party boss in East Berlin and the spokesman for the SED Politburo, had the task of announcing the new regulations. However, he had not been involved in the discussions about the new regulations and had not been fully updated.[78] Shortly before a press conference on 9 November, he was handed a note announcing the changes, but given no further instructions on how to handle the information. These regulations had only been completed a few hours earlier and were to take effect the following day, so as to allow time to inform the border guards. But this starting time delay was not communicated to Schabowski.[44]

At the end of the press conference, Schabowski read out loud the note he had been given. One of the reporters, ANSA's Riccardo Ehrman,[79] asked when the regulations would take effect. After a few seconds' hesitation, Schabowski assumed it would be the same day based on the wording of the note and replied, "As far as I know effective immediately, without delay".[44] After further questions from journalists, he confirmed that the regulations included the border crossings through the wall into West Berlin, which he had not mentioned until then.[80]

Excerpts from Schabowski's press conference were the lead story on West Germany's two main news programs that night -- at 7:17 PM on ZDF's heute and at 8 PM on ARD's Tagesschau. This, of course, meant that the news was broadcast to nearly all of East Germany as well. Later that night, on ARD's Tagesthemen, anchorman Hans Joachim Friedrichs proclaimed, "This is a historic day. East Germany has announced that, starting immediately, its borders are open to everyone. The GDR is opening its borders ... the gates in the Berlin Wall stand open."[44][78]

People were soon crossing, openly, in droves. Others began knocking pieces off of the wall, etc. for souveneirs. This went on for months, until, on June 13, 1990, the East German military began formally destroying the wall, a process that ended in 1991.

"The Jericho Narrative" alleges that the above is false by reason of omission, and that the real cause was sound. Just as Jericho fell to the blare of trumpets, the wall was brought down by electric guitar, a Springsteen concert in East Berlin on 19 July 1988. It was at least aimed at the right people, Unlike Reagan's bullshit rhetoric putatively aimed at the Russians (he was seemingly very bad at geography).

You know, it does no good to stop warring against the people of El Salvador if we simply turn around and wage war on the Aghans, Syrians, Libyans, Panamanians, Iraqis and Iranians, etc. The incessant "regime change" warmongering, the imperialism and militarism, the arms sales and assassinations, and the cheerleading for war from almost all quarters, most especially so-called liberals makes me think back to some of the early works of folks like Ms Travers and friends.

I remember that last one with great fondness. There was once a time when that was an anthem for a great number of the youth of America, even though it very likely meant jail or expatriation if they followed through. Really, I shit you not, the US once had an anti-war movement. Now even the self-styled liberals cheer our wars, or is that perhaps the one thing that hasn't really changed all that much.

Global temperatures are set to rise more than one degree above pre-industrial levels according to the UK's Met Office.

Figures from January to September this year are already 1.02C above the average between 1850 and 1900.

If temperatures remain as predicted, 2015 will be the first year to breach this key threshold.

The world would then be half way towards 2C, the gateway to dangerous warming.

U.S. officials investigating the $12.8 trillion market for U.S. Treasuries are zeroing in on a practice of trading the debt before it’s issued, said a person familiar with the matter -- spotlighting trades that several recent lawsuits allege are part of big banks’ efforts to rig Treasury markets.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. tipped the government’s avenue of inquiry in a recent regulatory filing. In a standard passage about areas under regulatory scrutiny, the bank’s Nov. 2 disclosure included a handful of words that hadn’t appeared the previous quarter: “offering,” “auction” and “when-issued trading.” It was a reference, the person said, to a fresh line of exploration in the government’s broader, months-old investigation into Treasuries trading.

That shows officials’ interest in one of the least transparent corners of the world’s largest debt market. When-issued securities act as placeholders for bills, notes or bonds before they’re auctioned. The instruments change hands over the counter, with lifespans of just days. There’s scant public information on trading volumes or the market’s biggest players.
...
Traders at global banks colluded to artificially inflate the price of instruments that allow them to sell U.S. debt before they own it, and then bought the debt at auctions for an artificially suppressed price, unfairly profiting at investors’ expense, according to several lawsuits filed against the banks beginning in July.

they took the rule of law off the table. Assange once said they not only killed the rule of law but create new law by reinterpreting old laws. Then their is the Justice Dept. that refuses to prosecute as it's not illegal it's just savvy business men doing god's work and can afford twisty corporate lawyers from Covington Burling who are unbeatable in the kangaroo courts.

Nice thing about publishing Hellraisers over here is that I can jump right into morning open thread, well better late than never, as they say.

I woke up more groggy than usual this morning. My morning eyes sure don't need that blinding blizzard whiteness of the GOS in the morning.

Composing a diary here is so easy; I should have made the switch a long time ago!

Hope everyone is having a great morning!

stopped short of a GBCW, since you have a good following over there and they might fix the site.

not a GBCW for JayRaye, altho I do expect to be there very little since my eyes can't take the light font on the bright white background. Get a headache in 5 minutes.

Went to Team Bernie to rec some diaries and then left. I'm with mimi, wish BNR and others would post here since I can't stand to read over there.

It wouldn't mean that this site was endorsing Bernie. Just more material added for consideration and discussion.

if this site endorses Bernie, that's fine by me. I don't want to make my preference site policy, that's up to the membership, but Bernie is my personal choice, even with his shortcomings on foreign affairs.

But I really wouldn't like the site to endorse Bernie. Some folks have principled reasons for voting Green, etc, and I wouldn't want them to feel left out. Hope the conversation can be broader here than it is over at DK.

That's just my own 2 cents not telling anyone else what to do or think.

and why I would not like to see the site, as whole, endorse a candidate...because that might narrow the conversation

However, I definitely welcome folks, as individuals, stating who they do support and writing diaries about who they do support as a part of the conversation here.

If the site does decided to support Bernie with a vote or something like that, I would give my reasons for us not doing that, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Might be for some tho and that's where the problem comes in.

If Bernie loses the primary I will be voting Green. So DK definitely will not be the place for me at that point.

not that i speak for anybody but myself in this, but i'd just as soon that the site not endorse a presidential candidate.

to me, it's more important that the site endorses the issues and interests of the 99%, which will never really be resolved by an election. an election might be part of the solution, but like the idea that success is a small part inspiration and a much larger part perspiration, the bulk of a solution for the 99% has to do with a mobilized, engaged, inclusive movement.

I thought the most critical thoughts vis a vis Bernie Sanders come from the left, and I didn't think that just publishing the BNR here as a matter of endorsement, but rather an anchor piece to trigger all the criticism that comes from "our" side.

May be that's a way of looking at it which is not imaginable for most. If I see Hedges, Chomsky, Nader, Jill Stein and other authors against Sanders, it looks to me like issues one would like to get into.

May be a distilled c99% BNR list just for that purpose would do. Most of the stuff is repetitive and may be the more important quotes from Sanders are already covered in your EB list. I really don't endorse anybody, can't vote anyhow, but wouldn't see, if I had to vote, for whom to vote. But I have a Bernie Yard sign now. Ha.Ha.

My preference would be that this site not endorse anyone even though I believe that the majority of folks here support Bernie who is also my personal preference. I would prefer that we not open that can of worms as a site.

While we do talk about politics here and about candidates, the main focus has been upon policy and issues first and I would hope that as a site, we keep our focus on the big picture issues.

We got back to Tallahassee yesterday afternoon after spending the weekend in St. Pete at my high school reunion. One of my closest friends volunteered to chair it this year and she did a terrific job. They were able to locate 380 of our 500 member graduating class and over 130 grads plus spouses and even siblings attended. That is over one third of my class that was located came back!

I am NOT into nostalgia, but I did get into it this weekend and had a wonderful time. I talked at length to probably 100 of my classmates including many with whom I was not close in high school. The conversations were wonderful. After talking to many other people outside my own class including people from other classes at my high school, I realize just how special my class was. Everyone was friendly toward everyone else and while we had our groups (often very large) of friends, there were not any real cliques. I saw that same friendliness this weekend.

We went on a tour of my high school on Saturday morning and the teacher who conducted the tour had done many of them in the past. When she saw just how many of us showed up (about 80+ including spouses, friends and other family, she was shocked. She said she had never had a group remotely that large before. One of my friends brought her two older sisters with her. Another guy brought his older brother and sister in law. We spent two hours touring the school (built in 1926) which is on the National Register. It was the first time since I graduated that I had been in the building and basically little had changed in the old building.

I am trying to catch up on some of my reading before we drive back to NC tomorrow. Also I will be prepping my Wednesday Open Thread diary.

EL, I have noticed that comments are usually fairly light in the earlier part of the day (eastern time) and then pick up later. You west coasters are heavy contributors. Wink

I thought I had today off, when it's actually Wednesday. My boss called me up and was glad that I was okay, at least. Guess today's a wash as it is. At least I didn't go into the office today. There is that.

I'm going to read the GOS from my phone till they fix the main site. Too much white space on the main site was killing my eyes. I stare at computer screens all day (my Google homepage is the black version), and the last thing I want to do is further mess up my 20x20 vision even more.

Crazy weekend all around. I basically spent it avoiding any of the Electric Daisy Carnival stuff (electronic music festival + carnival + dance party = madness). Can't hang with those guys anymore...just don't have the stamina or the desire. I've been to Ultra Music Festival in Miami twice (once saw Damien Marley and NAS perform together on stage, which was awesome)...that's good enough. I also ticked off a platonic lady friend of mine who got mad at me for not hanging out with her when I met another woman that piqued my interest. I don't even know what's going on there. Ugh, my life is not a soap opera. She'll cool off eventually. Hopefully.

Played in a quarterly poker tournament in the league that I've been in for a long while. $1000 prize. I played it sort of nice at first, because while you may know the other players' kung fu (playing styles basically--tight, loose, Team Reckless, stat geeks, wannabe World Series of Poker people, novices, serial bluffers, etc), what cards and what looks like is hot changes everything. There were at least eight full houses in one hour and a few of them were in a row. It was crazy. I survived the first table (4 in total, with a total of 60+ players in the end), and nearly met my untimely end a few times (I got really lucky, and turned cutthroat quickly). Final table was going on for a bit, and when there were five players left (myself included)...we ended up chopping the main pot and the Last Man Standing pot. So I walked away with over $200 bucks. Not a bad day at all.

Ben Carson is absolutely nuts. I've been listening to some of his statements. My verdict? He a functioning psychopath.

I've avoided a lot of the news over the weekend. Thank goodness for FB & Twitter. Kind of just wanted to get away from the world, you know?

The feature shared by neurosurgeons far out of proportion to other doctors is a large ego. All doctors can be accused of having big egos but more than other specialists, neurosurgeons- Ben Carson is exhibit 1 in this regard-have pathologically large egos.

ben carson strikes me as a narcissist. i find it hard to believe that he and trump have done as well as they have. then again it's awful to think that hillary the bloodthirsty, warmongering grifter is still quite likely to be the candidate of a major corporate party. it's kind of sad to think of what the success of the evil of these lessers suggests about the television-addled american voting public.

Trump, about 25% of the Republicans, Carson the same. That's 50% to two total charlatans. How can half of the Republican Party support obvious con men?

or

65% of the Democrats (the peace party? the working person's party?) supporting Hillary.

Neither is heart-warming

I honestly did not believe anyone could top Trump in the weird and whacko pronouncements, but I believe Carson has. For one thing, I am not sure just how much of what Trump say he believes. Trump is a salesman and promoter first. Carson on the other hand...seems to be doing anal extractions. Shok
