What is U.S. Labor Day?

It is a reminder that Bourbon (conservative, corporate) Democrat Grover Cleveland saw to it that the U.S. would commemorate Labor Day in September and not on May 1, when the rest of the world commemorates our very own, shameful Haymarket/Massacre Affair. And that was about a forty-hour work week for worker safety, not backyard barbecues!

https://caucus99percent.com/content/why-us-celebrates-labor-day-september ; https://caucus99percent.com/content/may-1-holy-day-obligation-90-buy-not...

It was also about concerted action by workers, alerted and mobilized by a free, non-establishment press that the establishment punished by hanging.

Today's union leaders? Meh. Workers united? Solidarity!

i'll spare you my cynicism about what labor day has been formed into by social manipulation and note that it can be whatever one makes it.

pardon my poor attempt to express something in a language with which i am not at all fluent, but here is my stab at it:

"einkauf macht frei" (my attempt at saying, "shopping makes you free")

I wishen my English would be as good as your German. Smile

The last five years all I am doing is freeing myself from stuff others have bought and inherited me with. I am still a prisoner of the stuff I am not allowed to give away.
I still hope to be free one day.

Wow... I guess this is what happens when you are critical of Israel.

I rage at Bernie Sanders, the last Jewish Bolshevik. But I can't hate him

Every Jew who lived under Soviet rule has a family member like Bernie Sanders, a living encyclopedia of the most catastrophic decisions made by Jews in the 20th century. But deep inside me there is a tiny bit of warmth: he's still family

For anyone who spent at least some part of their sentient years in the former Soviet Union, listening to Bernie Sanders delivering his sermons brings a sense of unsettling déjà vu.

The style of his rhetoric, the cadence of his speech, his choice of words from the hardcore Marxist vocabulary, his Leninist polemical style, his grotesquely nonsensical grandiose plans maddens the listener.

All of that, like a magic carpet, takes you back through the decades to the world we all hoped would be remembered only by the old timers, as material in history books serving as a cautionary lesson for the future generations.
....
You don't need to go to the library to find a history book about all the mistakes the Jews made in the 20th century. You only need to listen to Bernie’s speeches. He is a living encyclopedia of all the most catastrophic decisions made by Jews. It is sad and fascinating how Churchill never comes back from the dead, but Trotsky does.

When I hear Bernie speak, I start shouting at the TV screen. Although I am watching Bernie, in reality I am screaming at Uncle Boris. I am incensed with his naivete, orthodoxy, religiosity, self-righteousness and a fair amount of masochism.

I am angry with him because even after spending his entire life talking about the good and defending the evil he is still unable to see the truth. And after millions of innocents slaughtered, he is unable to admit even one mistake.

Well then... yeah this guy is getting hammered on Twitter.

@snoopydawg

i'm certain that any real marxist, leninist, trotskyite or genuine socialist for that matter would be deeply offended by that fellow's association of bernie sanders with their ideology.

perhaps it's best to just ignore the ignorant ravings of such a person.

Very few of my clients got the day off.
Their emails were coming during their typical work breaks.
Even Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland give working people liberal holidays and 2 and 3 hour lunches. Why can't we?
At any rate, on this Day 42 after the copperhead snake bit me, I was able to wear actual shoes. This also Day 3 post-pneumonia. I am feeling fairly normal and may actually get my doctor's all clear to go to Ecuador and Peru for a vacation next week!
Hope those in the path of Dorian are safe and prepared.

perhaps if the worker bees get to thinking that their work is honorable and has value, they will ask to be compensated fairly and treated with dignity. such a demand could blow the whole system apart.

i'm delighted to hear that you're getting back to normal and feeling well. i hope that you have a great vacation!

@joe shikspack It is, at the end of the day, up to the mistreated to demand better treatment. I think I was fired from at least 4 corporate jobs for speaking up.
I work for myself, treat my employee and part-time employees the way I wanted to be treated when I was not in control.
I am everybody's best boss ever.
It is a matter of respect, as I see it.
Respect given, respect received in return.
And unless my Doctor says otherwise, I am outta here next week! I am sort of packing...

@on the cusp @on the cusp OK to ask about the snake bite? What were circumstances? I hear they like rock piles. I have only seen a couple DOR (dead on road) ones. Copperhead is one of the most beautiful snakes in America. I think they are widespread in roughly eastern half of U.S. I heard of a birder that swooped his hand through is 'on ground' birdbath to get fallen leaves out, and in those he didn't notice the Copperhead of course, until it bit. He said 30K would have been the total bill without insurance! Like with so many big reptiles including lizards, it is the bacteria in their mouths that can do the worst damage.

There are much worse snakes in S.A.! Bushmaster and Fer-de-lance in some places. I know of birders on tours that got hit by both (different instances). Hope to hear about a great trip.

@dystopian @dystopian just as the sun was going down. In my front pasture.
It is truly infection, not venom, that is the problem.
Ok. The ER dr. did NOT offer me antibiotics, but monitored me for 6 hours to see if I needed anti-venom. He wanted me to stay overnight in the hospital. I refused, due to work.
I slept 4 hours, then attended a mediation with people who had travelled from a 100 miles away, and without going into details, my divorce client had a huge, huge imperative to get the mediation done, settle her divorce. I threw up, I had raging diarrhea, I passed out, and my client settled her case. To her, I am a hero. 20 hours after the bite, I got my first infusion of antibiotic. If I had not been so foolishly heroic, I might have spared myself a lot of pain and suffering. That was 20 hours for the infection to get set.
It was my client who held my hair, propped me up while I was vomiting up fentanyl and morphine. She will forever and always tell her friends to hire me if they need a lawyer.
I not only will not kill a snake when I walk up on one, I won't run over them when they are on the highway.
It is their world, too.

they are given by you. I imagine you walking side by side with the snakes on a highway and block the traffic. I like that images. You are hired. Though I don't believe in justice anymore, and have given up on lawyers be able to help me.

Heal. There will be another day worth living for, I hope.

@on the cusp What a story! Amazing! Great to know more, wow! I know I don't watch closely enough when I am out, and even when doing so you can miss them. Especially a Copperhead. That valor will do it every time. Smile

But rattlers can be hard dto see as well too. At least they often sound off. Once on a bird walk about 20 people walked past this long big root in the canyon bottom. I think the last person spotted it, a 4' rattler everyone had stepped within inches of. Surely it was full and just resting.

I used to collect and have handled all manner of snakes, including rattlers, they are all very neat animals, and up there with spiders and sharks for most-feared animals it seems.

Something cheery for nice break from the awful news

Berlin zoo celebrates rare birth of panda twins

Berlin zoo has said its resident panda Meng Meng has delivered twins, the first time one of the endangered animals has given birth in the country.

“Meng Meng became a mom – twice! We are so happy, we are speechless,” the zoo tweeted on Monday, posting a video of Meng Meng guiding one of her pink cubs to feed.

At birth the pink cubs, with their fine white down and disproportionately long tails, bear little resemblance to the adult black and white bears.

I wonder what happens to the tails?

Forgot to add the photo

heh, it's not just glenn kessler who needs to be on watch.

i was listening to npr when i was in the car the other day as they were doing their campaign coverage of the democrats. they did not mention bernie sanders once in their segment, though they mentioned some other contenders. they mostly talked about biden and warren leading the pack, but not a word about sanders.

pretty amazing. if sanders wins a state, these folks are going to have a bad case of the vapors.

The Todd is great too... I just want to bang on a drum all day... awesome song.

NPR should now be Nat. Propaganda Radio.
