Hope you're having a great vacation. We finally got a little rain.

Here's my favorite stories of the day...mostly gleaned from here on c99 (thanks everybody!)

https://news.vice.com/article/fbi-additional-details-hillary-clinton-ema...

The FBI is seeking permission to file a second, secret declaration in US District Court in Washington, DC describing its search for documents related to the bureau's probe of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state.

A short recap here:
http://www.politico.com/blogs/under-the-radar/2016/06/fbi-offers-second-...

longer piece
http://www.ninaillingworth.com/2016/06/01/the-foggy-bottom-of-clintons-m...

The simple truth is that Clinton is guilty, just as she has always been guilty and the only goddamn reason you haven’t heard about it is because mainstream, neoliberal media is both too fucking lazy to read documentation and too committed to the Imperialist cause – they’ve openly been campaigning for Hillary since at least last summer. There has literally never been any question of Clinton’s guilt in the mind of any neutral observer who’s actually read about the details involved in the case so far; the only real question has been “will President Obama risk his legacy by protecting Hillary from his own Attorney General?”

http://trustvote.org/

Concern has been expressed that the exit polls of the Democratic Primaries for this year, when compared to electronic voting machine totals, seem to show a pattern that might suggest that the electronic vote totals in about ten states may have been shifted from apparently votes from Sanders to Clinton..  In contrast to other nations, exit polls used currently by the Federal Government to assess election fraud in other countries are adjusted continuously on election day to match electronic voting machine totals, rather than to determine whether the electronic vote is accurate. Edison Research which has done all the prior exit polls in this primary has refused to release the raw data, as it has routinely refused since 2004.  A lawsuit is being submitted in Ohio about the refusal of both the Media Consortium and Edison Research to release the raw data which would show much more accurately who people really voted for.

Other things you can do include becoming a poll observer with a modest amount of training. Manipulation of the vote can frequently be minimized when there are people watching the process. Becoming a poll worker is an even bigger step. If you happen to be voting on an electronic voting machine without a paper trail, take a video or snapshot of the screen if you see it was flipped to the opposing candidate or if your candidate of choice fades away on the screen.

Hope I'm not committing a huge faux pas, but it says this is an open thread. So I have to ask since I haven't seen it mentioned on here yet.

Does anybody know what the hell was going on here on Sunday? I tried all day to get on and my connection just wouldn't go through. Later in the evening, I got a couple connections, but the stories were from April 12. Finally I got something about maintenance, but if there was an announcement about this in advance I missed it.

So was it a planned outage, hack attack, or did we break the site?

Turned out to be something called a cron. JtC was on vacation and trying to fix us up from afar.

He published an essay on it too. I can't find it.

So here's a bonus essay you might like instead if you haven't already seen it.

I wondered if someone at GOS was being a smart ass or something. But it sounds like something that was supposed to do good...... didn't. I Googled what is a cron?

cron is a Linux utility which schedules a command or script on your server to run automatically at a specified time and date. A cron job is the scheduled task itself. Cron jobs can be very useful to automate repetitive tasks.

Oh well, the California primary hasn't made a bit of difference since 1968. That night I was just 13 years old and was very interested in politics, was against the Vietnam War and wanted Eugene McCarthy to win. But my guys never win, so I'm used to it now. I expect it. 1972 was close with McGovern who had a great platform but he wasn't a very good candidate.

I walked to the polls this morning. Five miles both ways. Bern, baby, Bern

It felt good. I'd say he holds a majority in my rural county. Doesn't matter though

From Shut Down the Democratic National Convention

The convention is not our party. It is their party. It costs a lot of money to attend. Donate $100,000 and you become an “empire” donor, with perks such as “VIP credentials for all convention proceedings,” along with tickets to lavish corporate and Party receptions, photo ops with politicians at the convention podium, four rooms at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel and a suite at a Yankees game, where a “special guest” will be present. Short of $100,000? You can become a “gold” donor for $50,000, a “silver” donor for $25,000 or a “bronze” donor for $10,000.

We have the best democracy money can buy. The Wells Fargo Center and the fancy hotels in Philadelphia will be swarming with corporate representatives and lobbyists from Comcast, Xerox, Google and dozens of other companies that manage our political theater.

...

“Philadelphia has a poverty rate of 26 percent,” she said when I reached her by phone. “It has the highest number of people who die from drug overdoses in the country. The city has not housed anyone within the homeless population within 10 months. It has lost its state certification for the Department of Human Services child protection agency because of gross negligence and substandard conditions for children. Foster kids are stuck in an abusive system. Hundreds are not being placed. And at the same time, the city will spend $43 million on security for the convention. It will spend upwards of $60 million to house millionaires and billionaires while it ignores the vulnerable and attempts, by denying us a permit to march, to render them invisible.”

The Drone War:

While this article is from 2015, it gives a good background on one of the many things US Americans are not usually aware of when it comes our military. Since this article was written, the number of countries in which our military in one form or another are present has increased to 147. From American military extends its reach worldwide

Since at least the decolonization era of the 1950s, U.S. officials have feared the kind of protest increasingly seen in places like Vieques, Puerto Rico and Okinawa, Japan. Planners covet safe, worry-free bases insulated from opposition, military constraints and the danger of eviction. They want bases free of the kinds of restrictions the military faced during the Arab-Israeli wars of the 1970s, when several European allies prevented the use of their bases and airspace to support Israel, and again in the lead-up to the second invasion of Iraq in 2003, when Turkey and other European countries limited the use of U.S. bases on their soil. A Pentagon official explained in a 2009 presentation that the new aim is to “lighten U.S. foreign footprints to reduce friction with host nations” and avoid offending “host nation and regional sensitivities.”1

Avoidance of local populations, publicity and potential opposition is the new goal. And to achieve it, the Pentagon is increasingly turning to small, covert sites scattered around the globe — the “cooperative security locations” frequently referred to simply as “lily pads.”
