Modern education is little more than toeing the line for the capitalist pigs.

Guerrilla Liberalism won't liberate the US or the world from the iron fist of capital.

I'm jealous. Merlefest sounds great. Should be Haggard. Have fun!

Gaia Maps the Galaxy, Unearthing New Milky Way Mysteries for Astronomers

Astrophysicists from all over the world (but mostly, the New York metropolitan area) have gathered at the Center for Computational Astrophysics in Manhattan to sift through an unprecedented amount of information collected by Gaia, the European Space Agency’s space observatory. The data dropped at 6 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday, and scientists have hit the ground running, [digging through information on almost 2 billion stars.

According to the ESA, Gaia provides “sky positions and brightnesses for nearly 1.7 billion stars, distances, motions and color information for 1.3 billion, and a number of additional parameters for smaller subsets of stars and other celestial objects.” Launched in December 2013, Gaia is an orbiting observatory circling the sun, looking for interesting objects across the Milky Way.

All the information about the star map Gaia has been making is now available via the ESA Gaia Archive, which scientists will use extensively in the hack-a-thon room over the next few days.

The project is ongoing, but just this data alone could keep astronomers busy for decades.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

Americana are artifacts, or a collection of artifacts, related to the history, geography, folklore and cultural heritage of the United States. Defined as materials and things concerning or characteristic of The United States of America; broadly, its culture.

National identity, historical context, patriotism and nostalgia play defining roles in the subject. The ethos, or guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize America, such as The American Dream are central to the idea.

"There are scenes and places, wattages and personages, that belong - inextricably, unmistakably - to this country alone. There is an American quality, a tone, an energy...instantly recognizable..."

what to make of this?

A secretive Washington DC-based court that oversees the US government's foreign spy programs denied more surveillance orders during President Donald Trump's first year than in the court's 40-year history, according to newly released figures.

Annual data published Wednesday by the US Courts shows that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance (FISA) Court last year denied 26 applications in full, and 50 applications in part.

That's compared to 21 orders between when the court was first formed in 1978 and President Barack Obama's final year in office in 2016.

That's a rejection rate to date of 0.11 percent.

The report shows that 1,614 applications were made during 2017 to allow the National Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to intercept phone calls and emails. Breaking down that figure, the court said it permitted about three-quarters of all requests -- or 1,147 requests in full -- while 391 requests were granted after modification.

U.S. rushes to catch up with China, Russia over missiles

Addressing the House Armed Services Committee, U.S. Undersecretary of Defense and Research Michael Griffin presented a critical view of the country’s slow pace of advancement in this emerging field.

Griffin reportedly said, “The most significant advance by our adversaries has been the Chinese development of what is now today a pretty mature system for a conventional prompt strike at multi-thousand-kilometre ranges. We will, with today’s defensive systems, not see these things coming.”

He added, “It is time for us to renew our emphasis on and funding of these areas in a co-ordinated way across the department to develop systems which can be based on land for a conventional prompt strike, can be based at sea, and later on can be based on aircraft.”
