Cops are out of control and on power trips

There is no way that woman should have been detained or arrested just because of what she did. Not one of the cops were in a position to see what she did so on what grounds did they do that?

@on the cusp Is it illegal/assault to spit at or on a law enforcement officer (choking on 'law')?

Read the thread and several said it is illegal.

This article explains some of the reasons the police can get away with aborhorrent behavior:

Republicans and unions are like oil and water: They don’t go together. Except for one big exception. Republican politicians support police unions and unionized fire fighters too, often exempting them from the scorched earth policies they direct toward other public sector unions, like teachers and government workers.
“The police are the domestic version of national defense,” says Sam Popkin, a political science professor at the University of California, San Diego. “The reason that Republicans love them so much,” he explained, it that Republicans “identify very strongly in a time of change and turbulence with the troops that provide order. The police are very popular with Republicans and with the middle class in general.”

I imagine the cops are tired of being cursed & spat on/at. It does not look like she was injured, but she should not have been surprised.
My best friend (he & I were in Chicago in '68)lives in Portland and so far he has not been a participant--to my great relief.
The time will probably come for street resistance-but this isn't it. I think Michael Tracy says it pretty well.

@on the cusp I was a teen. I am 67. They can all kiss my ass.
They only get my respect when they write a good affidavit supporting a search warrant, or when they actually make an effort to keep the peace.

Or was she just a person who was tired of seeing cops dressed out like the military to take on unarmed citizens? She certainly wasn't dressed like she was part of either group. Giving cops a pass for this type of reaction for spitting in the general direction of cops is not something I would do. And how does anyone know if she had something in her mouth that she wanted gone? Besides as the video shows not one of the bike cops were in a position to see what she did.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

@chuckutzman Some people will defend the pigs no matter what they do. It's almost like they like the way a boot tastes when they lick it.

People have to earn my respect. Just putting on a pig's uniform does not earn anything from me other than disgust. I believe that the only kind of person that would take that job are bullies, psychopaths, sociopaths, and people that just want to get away with assault and murder.

Is it great yet?

@Jen Heh. Yup, lots of them in idiot America now. And when that boot is on all our necks then watch these wimps scream how unfair that is to their own "law abiding" selves, after all, they have nothing to hide, would never protest that treatment for others by their favorite jackbooted poor put upon cop, so why should they too be forced to lick that boot? Ooops, we're all going to lick that boot now that we've had so many of our fellow Americans beg for it. USA USA USA!!

TPTB are pushing it for all it's worth, probably because it sounds like "Intifada" and so vilifies the "anti-fascists" by association with "EEEEvil Mooslim Terrists".

You KNOW it's deliberate. It's all part of Their psyops.

@humphrey What percentage in police demographics? How do they react to these thuggeries? How are they in the different law enforcement agencies treated, and integrated or not? Same behaviors, or not?

Have never heard or read.

i'd seen an interview with a former black cop who'd said that cops zip on the uniform of whatever over-arching police security state bosses, and kill other black cops at the same rate as white po-po do.

i'd offer that at least a few citizens had tried to defend the woman in the video, where as in some of the citizen videos of the police assassination of kelly thomas in fullerton, CA, onlookeers were laughing and calling the play by play...

The motto is now "Comply or die". Lots less syllables, can be understood through a gas mask. They are of course sorry if any of us are offended by its somewhat brusque tone. But they can't take any chances- we all might be the next "fill in threat here".

And the gutless mayor won't stand up to them.

Oregon has always been a haven for white nationalists, in the 1920s Oregon had the highest per capita membership in the Ku Klux Klan...Portland is still one of the whitest cities in the US, something like 77% white...

@boriscleto Within a year the nuns, The Sisters of Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, had a convent, chapel and school between 4th and 5th downtown in Portland. The KKK burned a cross on their front lawn that year. The Benson Bubbler fresh water drinking fountains and many establishments were signed "White trade only".

Then there were the instances of Japanese people sent to Thule, California and other 'detention' centers. As recounted in 'Stubborn Twig' about the Yasui family of Hood River, from Good Reads review....

Heart-wrenching, superbly written account of the racial-bigotry, lying, hatred, and jealousy of white America, with a focus on Hood River, OR, in the years before the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor, that was behind the real reason (government studies reported the American Japanese were not a threat) for Roosevelt’s and government’s internment of the American Japanese. Using a true family with family interviews with good historical research this is a detailed accounting of the impact on each individual; their successes even with their trials with hatred and jealousy that they experienced. Then the most detailed, tear-jerking account of what each individual in the family encountered with the government’s curfew, travel, and internment policies. “Daughter - a senior at the U of O being the sole lonely individual late at night watching the train pass by that carried her family from Hood River South to internment with only what they could carry.” Plus the government’s denial to let her ‘break curfew’ (8pm) to attend her own graduation (over at 10pm) followed by her eventual escape, via a midnight bus, to Colorado. And of course, detailed descriptions of what the camps were like down to the fact that the latrines had no doors so the ladies tried to only go at night rather than in full few of the whole camp. Putting up cardboard to protect their straw-self-stuffed mattresses from the leaking melting tar of the poorly constructed small one room family ‘units’, plus the horrible day heat and freezing night conditions of the desert intermixed with their unsuccessful efforts to stop the ‘stealing’ of their properties and loss of 30 years of hard work. Good conclusion on the continued racism, bigotry and discrimination in Hood River following the few returning Japanese and the results of all of the above (plus 2 suicides and resultant Diaspora) on the subsequent children and grandchildren.

To the city of Vanport, a Portland neighborhood:
Vanport

A 1947 Oregon Journal investigation discussed the purported eyesore that Vanport had become, noting that except for the 20,000-some residents who still lived there, "To many Oregonians, Vanport has been undesirable because it is supposed to have a large colored population," the article read. "Of the some 23,000 inhabitants, only slightly over 4,000 are colored residents. True, this is a high percentage per capita compared to other Northwestern cities. But, as one resident put it, the colored people have to live somewhere, and whether the Northwesterners like it or not, they are here to stay."

Nice face on everything, but deeply entrenched divisions.

Small and dwindling black population.

My dad being a dark haired, dark skinned Sicilian/American second generation, suffered discrimination his entire life.

I have only as a late stage adult really come to understand how Portland really works.
