Colombia joins the global anti-neoliberalism wave
The uprising continues to spread.
Colombia is joining the continent-wide popular revolt against neoliberalism.
An estimated over 207,000 protesters across Colombia upset at decades of right-wing rule took to the streets Thursday in the latest progressive people's movement in Latin America to explode into the streets, following movements in Chile, post-coup Bolivia, and Ecuador.Demonstrators clashed with security forces in the capital, Bogotá, and elsewhere across the country.
"We are standing up to protest and tell all humanity that we need to demand change," protester and actress Aida Prado told The Associated Press.
The demonstrations, which had been planned, began with a general strike against the policies of President Iván Duque. Protesters, many carrying the Indigenous wiphala flag in solidarity with the people of Bolivia, expressed their anger over Duque's plan to cut pensions in the country and the lack of real forward movement in peace talks with the rebel group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
"We live in a country that kills children, that kills social leaders, with a government that is against peace," businesswoman Alexandra Guzmán said. "That is why we have to change something. We cannot continue to live like this."
Colombia has long been under the thrall of US-backed right-wingers, so it’s great to see the people rising up. https://t.co/yc8x2fwYTZ

What was the right-wing government's response?
As you might have guessed.

I saw most of this in an unexpected place
Cuenca Highlife is an expat site in Cuenca. The site had a pretty solid handle on our strikes in October. I’m encouraged by several of the current articles that would fit in here. Then reading some of the comments I see what we’re all up against. I guess I’ve been mostly lucky to meet and get to know US expats who think more like me and have rejected the political orthodoxy of most Americans.

My trip over Christmas last year
was a mind-blowing experience. Both of my guides just missed being blown up as kids in a school bus that drove by a car that exploded just after they passed it.
All they know is revolution, drug cartels, and civil war. All they want is peace and stability.
They wholeheartedly supported buddying up to the US. I had a frank talk with them about the consequences of that.
I absolutely fell in love with every waiter, every concierge, every security guard, and people on the street, and they are a great people who deserve a decent life. God All Mighty.
When I was boarding the bus to leave Bogota, the security guard, going off duty, ran to the bus, asked the driver for just a minute. That minute was to find me, give me a hug, and wish me well.
My heart is forever in Columbia.
