Around 8am Saturday morning the owner of Ecclesiastic Granite Fab discovered the body of Skye Mockabee in his parking lot in Cleveland's Puritas-Longmead neighborhood.

The 26-year-old Mockabee was declared dead at 8:30 after EMS, firefighters and police arrived at the scene. The police report said the body was lying face-down next to a tow truck with blood coming out of her mouth. The police report also described the victim as a man. On Monday the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office deadnamed Mockabee.

Police have released few details about her death, including a motive for the killing. Police spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said there was no further information to release.

You might think that Cleveland officials could do this right (i.e. "respectfully") by now. Skye is the fourth transgender murdered in Cuyahoga County in the past four years.

Mockabee's death also comes a month after the city of Cleveland passed legislation that allows transgender people to use whichever restroom, shower or locker room aligns with their gender identity, without fear of discrimination.

I'm sure that will be much comfort to those who loved Skye.

According to her Facebook page, Skye worked at Chipotle Mexican Grill and had attended South University in Savannah, GA after growing up in Cleveland.

Skye is at least the third transwoman of color murdered in July and the seventeenth transgender person to die of violence or suspicious circumstances this year.

As long as women, Black Americans, those who live in poverty, sex workers and trans women are devalued to the point of inhumanity in America, trans women who live at all of these intersections, or even just one or two, will be murdered.

Again, these are just the trans people who we know have been murdered this year. Because of the intersections they live at, it’s likely that many have not been reported.

We’re inching closer and closer to breaking the record of reported murders of trans people that was set last year. Every time it seems like we’re finally falling behind last year’s pace, another trans person is murdered and we’re right back in this awful situation again. Rest in peace and rest in power, Skye.
