The blind spot of today's GOP

Ebola was a horrible emergency, so the GOP response was to ban travel, arrest and hold travelers to this country, and to harass and embarrass medical workers who did their best to stop the pandemic.

With a few exceptions, the Democratic response, led by President Obama, was to work with other countries, apply the best science and medicine, and eventually stop the spread of this killer disease.

Because of the success, our budget still has $500,000,000 in contingency funding, ready to adapt to any future outbreak, and to insure that our country will not suffer the deadly scourge that is Ebola. Maintaining that fund is just good science, good medicine, and good public policy. Unless you are a member of the GOP. More on that later.

Zika, a disease mainly spread by mosquitos, is fairly innocuous to most people. A fever, some irritation, and an occasional bad reaction. Much like the flu. Oh, sex can also spread the disease. It can rarely lead to increased rate of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Unless you are a pregnant mom. Then, if infected, you have a high probability that your baby will suffer from Microencephaly, a miniaturized skull and brain.

The GOP's response to Ebola was pathetic. Fear mongering, idiotic proclamations and provocations, and a completely anti-scientific view of the problem and its solutions. They are repeating their ineffable stupidity with Zika.

First, they wanted to cut social services in order to have paid for our tardy, but eventual appropriate response to Ebola. Luckily, pressure, cooler heads, and some people based demands eventually prevailed.

Now, they want to take that funding away, destroying the only reasonable firewall against Ebola, and use it to fund a half-hearted measure against Zika. That is akin to robbing Peter to buy off Paul, when both Paul and Peter are deadly serial killers. The lack of logic and depth of the irrationality of their response is stunning.

For some reason, the GOP seems incapable of planning for the future. They deny a problem exists, and when the evidence is clear even to their puny minds, they react in bizarre ways, spouting off talking points from Rush, or Grover, or other Tea Buggered sources, and refusing to even consider a proper, rational, scientific and well thought out response. Putting a successful Ebola doctor in a cage? When every test was negative? When she saved countless lives and helped prevent the spread of that disease? Insanity. Sheer, utter, unbridled, and teeming insanity.

Let's take another issue, something seemingly mundane, yet critically important to the health and wealth of our nation - allegedly something that TeaBuggers, GOPers, and conservatives are trying to achieve (ahem) by cutting spending and cutting taxes for the rich.

Roads and bridges, sewers, water, and food supplies.

One reason why AI controlled cars, like Google's driverless car, have problems navigating, is because the roads are in such terrible condition, lane markings are almost invisible. This prevents an AI car from operating safely. (Not to mention you and me, or any truck driver)

Roads are so bad in many states that some drivers are now seeking alternate routes, for fear that the direct route will damage their car. Not only are there major potholes, but these have generated second and third generation baby potholes.

USA today reported in 2015 that 65,000 bridges in the US and A are in poor or critical condition. By "critical" they actually mean that collapse is a distinct possibility. We are not talking about a tiny bridge in Chappaquiddick, which has been actually near complete collapse for two decades, but the major highways crossing rivers across the country. It is no surprise that of the ten states with the most dangerous highway bridges in the country, six of them are run by Teabagger Governors. It is also no surprise that those states' US senators repeatedly refuse to properly fund road and bridge maintenance and construction.

Here is what happens when you properly fund bridge maintenance and repair.

A. You hire a shitload of people to do the work. This is a permanent boost to the Local economy.
B. They buy materials from local and regional sources, including steel, iron, copper, cement, asphalt, etc. I suspect that most suppliers, especially small and medium companies, may tell you that their companies' (and their employees') financial health is improved if they are selling more supplies.
C. The roads and bridges become far more efficient and safe, lowering death rates, accident rates, and damage to vehicles.
D. A penny invested in maintenance ad infrastructure ends up bringing back many, many times the cost of that penny in tax payments, etc. In short, you invest a penny, and you get a dollar back.

Here is what happens when you fail to properly fund road and bridge maintenance and repair:

I-40 bridge in Oklahoma
Kinzie bridge in Pennsylvania
C-470 collapse over I-70 in Colorado
I-35 bridge in Minnesota

Deaths, injury, loss of access to areas, delays. That is what happens when we adopt GOP ideas and fail to deal with our problems in a serious, rational manner.

This leads to one undeniable conclusion. The GOP either refuses, or more likely, is utterly incapable of planning for the future and applying professional responses to significant dangers and problems we face here and now.

What is it about the TeaBuggered class of the GOP that makes them climate change deniers? What possesses them to deny support and solutions to communities devastated by floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes? How can they in good conscience not adequately fund road, bridge, sewer, water, and food supply infrastructure (including FEDERAL, not company testing of food and food sources) that would provide jobs, increase productivity, save lives, and improve the quality of lives across this country?

I don't get it. I admit that I really cannot grasp the the TeaBuggerer mentality in Congress. Worst of all, a good percentage aren't simply pandering to their idiot base, many of them actually believe in their cut funding, cut taxes, cut deficits mantra that they screech at the top of their lungs.

book by Chris Mooney. Still relevant. But I think the thing is they (and now it would seem a certain portion of Democrats) will try to destroy anything that stands in the way of their own spoils...no matter who it hurts.

I'm completely dumbfounded by the mentality of today's Conservative movement.
It's as though they yearn for the End Times or some shit. I want to scream at them "Evolve already, like the rest of humankind".

For both the "Right Wing Christian Nut Jobs" and the "Right Wing Islamic Nut Jobs."

The RWCNJ's are looking to speed us along to:

The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. Then I saw three impure spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.

“Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”

Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

Or in the case of the RWINJ's (ISIS):

There is a temptation to rehearse this observation—that jihadists are modern secular people, with modern political concerns, wearing medieval religious disguise—and make it fit the Islamic State. In fact, much of what the group does looks nonsensical except in light of a sincere, carefully considered commitment to returning civilization to a seventh-century legal environment, and ultimately to bringing about the apocalypse.

The Islamic State has attached great importance to the Syrian city of Dabiq, near Aleppo. It named its propaganda magazine after the town, and celebrated madly when (at great cost) it conquered Dabiq’s strategically unimportant plains. It is here, the Prophet reportedly said, that the armies of Rome will set up their camp. The armies of Islam will meet them, and Dabiq will be Rome’s Waterloo or its Antietam.

“Dabiq is basically all farmland,” one Islamic State supporter recently tweeted. “You could imagine large battles taking place there.” The Islamic State’s propagandists drool with anticipation of this event, and constantly imply that it will come soon. The state’s magazine quotes Zarqawi as saying, “The spark has been lit here in Iraq, and its heat will continue to intensify … until it burns the crusader armies in Dabiq.” A recent propaganda video shows clips from Hollywood war movies set in medieval times—perhaps because many of the prophecies specify that the armies will be on horseback or carrying ancient weapons.

Now that it has taken Dabiq, the Islamic State awaits the arrival of an enemy army there, whose defeat will initiate the countdown to the apocalypse. Western media frequently miss references to Dabiq in the Islamic State’s videos, and focus instead on lurid scenes of beheading. “Here we are, burying the first American crusader in Dabiq, eagerly waiting for the remainder of your armies to arrive,” said a masked executioner in a November video, showing the severed head of Peter (Abdul Rahman) Kassig, the aid worker who’d been held captive for more than a year. During fighting in Iraq in December, after mujahideen (perhaps inaccurately) reported having seen American soldiers in battle, Islamic State Twitter accounts erupted in spasms of pleasure, like overenthusiastic hosts or hostesses upon the arrival of the first guests at a party.

She would likely put boots on the ground, as would any Republican candidate. That's exactly what they need to, in their eyes, fulfill apocalyptic prophecy.

This article in The Atlantic is very enlightening:

Makes me realize when reports of this or that happened somewhere other than Syria, that ISIS was probably not directly behind it. Like in California. They may have been inspired by ISIS, but I don't believe they were part of the organization. Members are supposed to move to Syria, according to the article. It all has to do with establishment of the caliphate, and prophecy of the apocalypse which says that armies come to them.

And Israel is important to both groups of nutters when it comes to end times.

Sigh. . .

EDIT: I just realized we both posted links to the same article. Excellent read!

Boots on the ground will legitimize the Caliphate and followers from all over the world will flock to join the battle...

Interesting comments from clerics in the US, and the divisions among the Islamic sects in particular the Sunni's and their Salafism practicing branch and their hatred of the moderns "Moderns" such as the Shites who basically face a death sentence under ISIS...

Doesn't make the "news" here, but it's kinda like Mexican cartels beheading people who refuse to join them. If you refuse to go back in time and join them, you die. Add drone strikes, bombs from Russia, and their own military, and you have to wonder how anyone could turn away refugees.

"rainy day" funds. Christie raided them to produce his alleged balanced budgets. (Yes, along with stealing teachers pension funds, etc.)

Christie bleats about balancing the budget, but the reality is, in a couple years the stolen funds will run out and we'll be 10x worse off than before.

Underfunded pensions for all the public servants...

Are you ready for Kristie Kreme to offer "Too Good To Be True" retirement incentives as he leaves office when the money runs out?

Then the Republithugs can blame the Democrat that beats him for the mess...
It will be even better if they get a black guy...
Where have I seen that before?
