Black Congressional Caucus opposes changes to superdelegates

From Scrutiny Hooligans:

The superdelegate system is not perfect but it has worked for us quite well over the years and frankly the superdelegates have never needed to cast any superdelegate votes to alter what the voters did during the primary elections,” said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. “Never. That’s not the case this year either. The concern many of us have, of course, is that our numbers would shrink in terms of having influence over and involvement with what happens at the convention.“

And apparently the Hispanic Congressional Caucus stands with them as well.

Well alrighty then. As long as electoral corruption benefits their unspecified interests it's ok? Their influence would shrink?

Tom Sullivan admits to "getting schooled" because:

. . . speaking of weedy, annual precinct meetings here occur either at the polling place where the precinct normally votes or at an alternate publicly accessible location nearby. But getting access to community centers, libraries, etc. for the meetings on a set day and hour once a year is problematic, putting many party meetings in conflict with community groups’ scheduled monthly meetings. It’s a chronic problem. So at a state convention a couple cycles ago, a (white) delegate proposed modifying state party rules to allow meetings to be held in people’s houses. Seemed innocent enough.
Black delegates erupted in protest (mostly older women). How many of their friends would feel welcome attending their annual meetings at a strange house in a strange (possibly white) neighborhood? No way, they argued. Such a change would suppress participation among their community. They insisted — no, demanded — the existing rules be kept in place. Only neutral, public locations for the meetings. The proposed change failed.
It was a real eye-opener (and not the last). Their lived experience gave them a very different perspective on what appeared at first to an older, white male to be an innocuous request. I got schooled.

I'm having a little trouble seeing how the precinct meeting example relates to superdelegates. Apples and oranges.

This type of discussion is ripe for a pie fight, but my experience on Skid Row has shown me that older establishment blacks tend to have a conservative reactionary opposition to change. Blacks and Hispanics are just as likely to be low information voters as whites. The vast bulk of all voters are low information voters.

If there is a rational reason for the Black and Hispanic caucuses to oppose eliminating superdelegates, it was not presented in this article.

I don't get it. Don't see it. What is the rationale for opposing positive changes? How does eliminating corrupt white superdelegates diminish the influence of Blacks and Hispanics?

I was really baffled why Tom Sullivan claimed the Black and Hispanic Caucuses had a point.
I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

The Dr. West quote nailed it. I was appalled when John Lewis attacked Bernie's civil rights credentials. Of course, I was accused of being a racist Berniebro when I joined the chorus of support for Bernie at The Daily Upchuck. My Old Black Panther buddy, Deacon, got a kick out of it when I informed him I was a racist Berniebro (who just happens to be registered Green).

Hence why Bush was suddenly Hispanic. If he had gotten the Nomination, you know for a fact they would have tried to play folks against him as Anti-Latino.

What's with the hatred? There's some weird psychological issue there, is all I know.

although I think it's anxiety about their lack of principles. Most of those people have lived comfortable bourgeois lives. Accordingly, any values they claim to embrace exist in the abstract. They've never been oppressed and have never had to stand up and defend themselves. So, they are frightened of the prospect of having to actually put their principles into action. They are insecure and morally unmoored. When I was a young man, those privileged people grappled with their insecurities (eg, the privileged kid who cannot discern how much of their success was earned and how much was bestowed). That reflection has been replaced by a raging hostility towards those who reflect their own shortcomings, such as Bernie Sanders and his unbroken commitment to social and economic justice. That's why all they can offer are juvenile name-calling and character assassinations. They stand for nothing but the protection of their own fragile egos.

So if the superdelegate votes never changed anything, how did that work for them quite well? And why are they needed at all? If the primary votes have never been altered, then why have superdelegates? How much do they get paid to be superdelegates? Because that's the only reason I can think that they want it to continue, since apparently they don't change anything.

Without supers, minorities would have less influence and involvement? But they have never changed anything! So what influence are they having? Influence and involvement to keep everything exactly the way the voters wanted them?

It's not that they care about the institute institution of super-delegates, it's that none of them want to give up their special "super" insider status. It's not about the Party or the constituents. It's about them, PERSONALLY.

Edited: typo. Thank goodness there's no Institute of Super Delegates.

And a big swooping hat tip to elena carlrna:

Obama,
who narrowly leads in the count of pledged, "non-super" delegates, has
doled out more than $694,000 to superdelegates from his political
action committee, Hope Fund,
or campaign committee since 2005. Of the 81 elected officials who had
announced as of Feb. 12 that their superdelegate votes would go to the
Illinois senator, 34, or 40 percent of this group, have received
campaign contributions from him in the 2006 or 2008 election cycles,
totaling $228,000. In addition, Obama has been endorsed by 52
superdelegates who haven't held elected office recently and, therefore,
didn't receive campaign contributions from him.

It would be nice to get an update on this angle.

I know at least two people from Europe who fought the Communists in WWll: one from Latvia and one from Hungary (1953). Both escaped on foot and barely got out. Actually these are stories we need to hear.

They are vehemently Republican. Scared of anything "socialist". Big fights with younger offspring who have a more "Democratic" kinship.

Regardless of how middle class and boot strapped they were, they will not waver from the Republicans. For them it is persona. I might add, they are high end professionals, speak multiple languages, very well read and intelligent. But on this subject, brick walls.

One is also unspeakably prejudiced against Jewish people. Believes the clap trap of taking all the money before they left the old country. I do not know how the camps and trains are justified. Again a subject just listened to and a few questions for thought, quietly saying my bit. Then no more.

In so many ways these people have contributed to the US and their children are great. They know a way of life from before the war in Europe which no longer exists. Food finding and preparation; culture; history; literature and music, nature and geography. Art.

It's not easy dealing wth nuance and ambiguity.
