Black Congressional Caucus opposes changes to superdelegates
From Scrutiny Hooligans:
The superdelegate system is not perfect but it has worked for us quite well over the years and frankly the superdelegates have never needed to cast any superdelegate votes to alter what the voters did during the primary elections,” said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. “Never. That’s not the case this year either. The concern many of us have, of course, is that our numbers would shrink in terms of having influence over and involvement with what happens at the convention.“
And apparently the Hispanic Congressional Caucus stands with them as well.
Well alrighty then. As long as electoral corruption benefits their unspecified interests it's ok? Their influence would shrink?
Tom Sullivan admits to "getting schooled" because:
. . . speaking of weedy, annual precinct meetings here occur either at the polling place where the precinct normally votes or at an alternate publicly accessible location nearby. But getting access to community centers, libraries, etc. for the meetings on a set day and hour once a year is problematic, putting many party meetings in conflict with community groups’ scheduled monthly meetings. It’s a chronic problem. So at a state convention a couple cycles ago, a (white) delegate proposed modifying state party rules to allow meetings to be held in people’s houses. Seemed innocent enough.
Black delegates erupted in protest (mostly older women). How many of their friends would feel welcome attending their annual meetings at a strange house in a strange (possibly white) neighborhood? No way, they argued. Such a change would suppress participation among their community. They insisted — no, demanded — the existing rules be kept in place. Only neutral, public locations for the meetings. The proposed change failed.
It was a real eye-opener (and not the last). Their lived experience gave them a very different perspective on what appeared at first to an older, white male to be an innocuous request. I got schooled.
I'm having a little trouble seeing how the precinct meeting example relates to superdelegates. Apples and oranges.
This type of discussion is ripe for a pie fight, but my experience on Skid Row has shown me that older establishment blacks tend to have a conservative reactionary opposition to change. Blacks and Hispanics are just as likely to be low information voters as whites. The vast bulk of all voters are low information voters.
If there is a rational reason for the Black and Hispanic caucuses to oppose eliminating superdelegates, it was not presented in this article.
Comments
The majority of superdelegates are white males
JS
So how does that benefit Blacks and Hispanics?
I don't get it. Don't see it. What is the rationale for opposing positive changes? How does eliminating corrupt white superdelegates diminish the influence of Blacks and Hispanics?

I think the rationale is
"I've got some power as a superdelegate and I'm not going to give it up" The rest is just bullshit.

Stop thinking of them as Minority Leaders...
And start thinking of them as members of the 1%, and it all makes sense.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
I appreciate your confirmation
I was really baffled why Tom Sullivan claimed the Black and Hispanic Caucuses had a point.
I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.
The Dr. West quote nailed it. I was appalled when John Lewis attacked Bernie's civil rights credentials. Of course, I was accused of being a racist Berniebro when I joined the chorus of support for Bernie at The Daily Upchuck. My Old Black Panther buddy, Deacon, got a kick out of it when I informed him I was a racist Berniebro (who just happens to be registered Green).

The one percent will happily...
hide behind their shields of victimization. Of course they aren't really victimized, just able to claim it because they have the right checkbox checked.
Hence why Bush was suddenly Hispanic. If he had gotten the Nomination, you know for a fact they would have tried to play folks against him as Anti-Latino.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.

if only
bernie was black, instead of a "limp-dicked jew" (thanks, dailykos front-pager! true class.) there'd probably be a super-deep conversation about how "we know him".

Did a front pager really call Bernie that?
Damn glad my abstinence program is working out. That plsce had been a holy wreck since The Nephew Pie Fight. Holy shit I was in stitches for a week.
"They'll say we're disturbing the peace, but there is no peace. What really bothers them is that we are disturbing the war." Howard Zinn
yes
pos bbb "i've got a dog walker" on the front page called bernie a limp-dicked jew. because hooray orangewater.
i don't understand why people still give that piece of shit clicks. but hey, separation therapy or whatever.

Isn't that a clever way the Hillbots of getting Berners to
support her? They are so clever! No wonder, Bernie lost. Only the stupids voted for him. Of course, a well-reasoned argument by BBB should suffice to shame all of us Bernie Bros (and Bernie chicks) because south of the anatomical border, somethings may be as flaccid as Hillbot cerebral faculties. So, BBB, does the NSA have a picture of your manly pee-pee? Snowden says they have quite a file on that--really. And BBB, you must certainly be one of the stars of the dick parade because you are such a monumental PRICK.
i'm
not even convinced bbb is a black man. he writes like an aggressive, white christian high %er.
i guess maybe it's easy to assume that role, no matter who you are. it's pre-packaged.

armando
is a sniffly tool, but he's much better at making a point than bbb, however fail (bernie sanders will never get anywhere in the primary) he might be. bbb is about as lucid as a cock fight, and he makes up for it with desperate spam posts.

Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
Why am I not shocked it was that
Why am I not surprised that BBB that said it. (always believed him to be a closet racist anyways)
And surprise surprise, Kos not only allows it but praises him and gives him FP status again.
That donkey-d*** sucking POS Markos just confirms what I have said over there for years. Orange State is an antisemitic wasteland.
If I hadn't gotten banned I would be after reading that on the FP.

I caught that one very early and bowed out. It got much worse, on to stalking and was quite enjoyable to read for one who did not buy into the premise.

"Limp-dicked Jew"?
And on the front page? I see that piece of shit place is still keeping it classy, along with the piece of shit front pager who wrote that. Now that, imo, is antisemetic. Exchange Jew for black man. Offensive? Yep! The phallic part is simply stooping to a tiny hands place. Classy as usual.
From an armchair psychologist pov, he might have some internal angst about a personal short coming or downfall. Know what I'm saying?
I find their hatred towards a true progressive revealing
Even if they legitimately thought Hillary was the better or right candidate, there's simply no legitimate reason for the Bernie hatred. It's weird. Unlike Hills, he has spent 40 years being scandal-free, basically following the same path the whole time.
What's with the hatred? There's some weird psychological issue there, is all I know.
An envious hatred.
They hate Bernie because he stands for values they are incapable of supporting due to their greed or other moral failings.

Agreed
although I think it's anxiety about their lack of principles. Most of those people have lived comfortable bourgeois lives. Accordingly, any values they claim to embrace exist in the abstract. They've never been oppressed and have never had to stand up and defend themselves. So, they are frightened of the prospect of having to actually put their principles into action. They are insecure and morally unmoored. When I was a young man, those privileged people grappled with their insecurities (eg, the privileged kid who cannot discern how much of their success was earned and how much was bestowed). That reflection has been replaced by a raging hostility towards those who reflect their own shortcomings, such as Bernie Sanders and his unbroken commitment to social and economic justice. That's why all they can offer are juvenile name-calling and character assassinations. They stand for nothing but the protection of their own fragile egos.
"raging hostility" is what I feel about my mother
I have lived highlife (relatively) and grad school life (used to be poverty scale). Now I am declining through the middle class. And can see it. And I am afraid.

IMHO, it is the same
as it was toward Occupy, Edward Snowden, and now Bernie. Every one of these three threatened the status quo. These people are well off and political insiders. They do not want the system to change. They are guardians of the system that they benefit from.

A tax on Wall Street transactions? Never!
A $15 minimum wage? No way!
You'd think Bernie was demanding they give away all their worldly goods and live in poverty. Instead, it's proof of what I've been saying for most of my adult life. They've forgotten one of the most basic lessons kids are supposed to learn in Kindergarten: how to share.

I wish...
I wish Bernie were a young Black man saying the same things. Heck, I would even live with a bit of honest reverse racism (your problems are because of old rich white men). I'd take it if that what was needed to kick people out of their stupor and start the massive shift this country and the world needs.
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
I read this a while ago. It didn't make sense then and doesn't
make sense now:
So if the superdelegate votes never changed anything, how did that work for them quite well? And why are they needed at all? If the primary votes have never been altered, then why have superdelegates? How much do they get paid to be superdelegates? Because that's the only reason I can think that they want it to continue, since apparently they don't change anything.
Without supers, minorities would have less influence and involvement? But they have never changed anything! So what influence are they having? Influence and involvement to keep everything exactly the way the voters wanted them?

Exactly. So what they are talking about is PERSONAL power
It's not that they care about the
instituteinstitution of super-delegates, it's that none of them want to give up their special "super" insider status. It's not about the Party or the constituents. It's about them, PERSONALLY.Edited: typo. Thank goodness there's no Institute of Super Delegates.
There should be an institute, Hk, Holy Hell.

The 1%
never cedes power. They love money in politics...why fight it? They would vote to make the superdelegates more super. The corruption is obvious to anyone who looks.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Just to drop in another POV here...
I know at least two people from Europe who fought the Communists in WWll: one from Latvia and one from Hungary (1953). Both escaped on foot and barely got out. Actually these are stories we need to hear.
They are vehemently Republican. Scared of anything "socialist". Big fights with younger offspring who have a more "Democratic" kinship.
Regardless of how middle class and boot strapped they were, they will not waver from the Republicans. For them it is persona. I might add, they are high end professionals, speak multiple languages, very well read and intelligent. But on this subject, brick walls.
One is also unspeakably prejudiced against Jewish people. Believes the clap trap of taking all the money before they left the old country. I do not know how the camps and trains are justified. Again a subject just listened to and a few questions for thought, quietly saying my bit. Then no more.
In so many ways these people have contributed to the US and their children are great. They know a way of life from before the war in Europe which no longer exists. Food finding and preparation; culture; history; literature and music, nature and geography. Art.
It's not easy dealing wth nuance and ambiguity.
You may choose to look the other way, but you can never say again you did not know. ~ William Wiberforce
