Bernie Can Win Decisively in a 3 Way Race vs HRC and Trump

I truly believe that if Bernie does not run independent, and encourages his voters to vote for HRC "as the only way to defeat Donald Trump," that just barely enough of them will hold their nose and do it for the Supreme Court. And HRC will squeak in, hated and with no coat tails, because Donald Trump is truly unfit, in a non-traditional way. HRC is unfit, much like the Bush family. But as we also know, the "establishment" wasn't just ready for Hillary this year, they were ready for Jeb. So the HRC level of unfit has previously been embraced by this country, but Donald Trump's brand of unfit has not been seen before on this level. So I think HRC can pull it off if Bernie TRIES to help her and gets her just enough of his people.

That being said, I am SURE, that if Bernie Sanders ran as an Independent, he would beat both Hillary Clinton and Trump. Just take all of Bernie's voters in the primaries, and all of the indies that wanted to vote for him, and the Trump voters who really just hate Hillary, and about 50% of Garry Johnson's 10%, and the undecideds, and those who will newly register just to vote for Bernie once they learn more about him throughout the summer. But although he would get more votes than them, failing to get 50% in most states would throw things into chaos.

However, I have an idea that could EASILY make Bernie the people's choice. It would take a sacrifice on Bernie's part, because he would have to curtail his platform a bit. Basically, Bernie would promise to only serve one term, and to focus primarily on campaign/election reform, and restoring some fairness to the tax code, especially cracking down on corporate welfare and corporate loopholes. As far as the other parts of his platform, it would fall into 2 categories.

1. Legislative proposals
All legislative proposals (such as Single Payer), falling out of the two main categories, would become educational initiatives on Bernie's part. He would campaign and educate voters on the wisdom of his many proposals. And after the main points of his campaign promises are done, he can try to move on to more proposals that have gained any traction.
2. Appointments and Foreign Policy
This is the best part. Bernie rides into office as a credible change agent, promising to focus exclusively on the two most popular and simplest parts of his agenda. But all the while, he gets to remake regulatory policy with his appointments of non-corporate hacks. And he gets to manage American foreign policy in a strong yet non-interventionist manner, as he tries to moderate some of our drone and Israel policies. According to Bernie's statements, the war on Isis would continue as is.
3. Supreme Court. As Bernie campaigns on a positive, Make American Democracy Great Again platform, he will campaign for Senate Democrats, all the while savaging their candidate. He can pull that off, get the Senate, and then appoint a kick-ass Supreme Court.

The attractiveness is this:
-Trump: An Outsider, but is unfit, and maybe crazy
-Clinton: Insider, Untrustworthy, considered corrupt in government, careless with secrets, fit but hated by many
-Bernie: Outsider, Trustworthy, Fit, Not Corrupt, Focused on main issues people want action on, not personally ambitious (1 term)

The reason for pledging one term and to focus on the main most unifying platform, is that this can generate a Movement that even includes Republicans and people who have never voted. It can create a wave that can generate Democratic majorities. Ironically, when HRC's and Bernie's clean government platforms are debated, more rank and file Democrats will actually endorse Bernie's proposals, and that will help Bernie endorse them and help them get elected.

Bernie is who the people want this year for a simple reason. He has none of the things that everybody hates about politicians: lying, greed, ambition, rich donors, scandals, inauthenticity. And he has all the things people love: principles, passion, honesty, guts to answer tough questions and tell it like it is, and he is an OUTSIDER in the year of the outsider. It's TOO perfect to pass up.

Luckily, I know that Jeff Weaver reads all my diaries as soon as they are posted, so.....Oh wait, I was dreaming.

Thanks for reading. If you actually made it this far. And if you did, I wish I could give you a cookie. But this thing just doesn't work like that.

Deadlines for getting on the ballot are coming up very soon. To start an Independent run now, there would need to be a strategy for getting on the ballot.

For example, Illinois, Indiana, and New Mexico are at the end of this month. NC's deadline is in three days.

Thanks for reading.

I have looked into this. Illinois is the only traditionally solid Dem state where the deadline is soon. And Bernie could get the signatures. In California, the Greens or Peace and Freedom can give him their spot. California is the only state where he would have to do that. In the other states the signature burden is not that high.

Why one term? What will that accomplish? Congress will fight Bern tooth and nail over curtailing Wall Street and tax breaks.

To build up the good will amongst the more skeptical voters. He would need a coalition that could get him above 50%. The one term thing shows those voters that he is going to clean up Washington and that is his only mandate. IMO, That is way more of a mandate than ANY of the three can realistically get, by any other method.

The rest of his influence would be the considerable appointment powers and foreign policy initiatives.

Healthcare and repealing Citizens United are pretty important issues too, and a big part of the appeal that Bernie has.

Love is my religion.

I appreciate your thoughtful argument, and have 2 comments.

Bernie's accepting Jill Stein's offer of being on the top of the ballot would obviate the problems of getting on the states' ballots, and he doesn't have to finalize the decision until after the dem convention. I believe that his 50% of the pop vote would win him sufficient electoral votes in the 4-way race. (I include libertarians.)

He will be a popular president, especially after the people all can really see him in action. Of course, he would have moneyed interests to contend with. Nonetheless, after his first term, the Congress will have switched easily to more progressive democrat control. So, a second term would be the time for his most major accomplishments. I don't see any benefit to limiting himself to one term, except to quiet those who object to such an aged candidate; he is very healthy now, despite his grueling campaign schedule.

I urge anyone in a state that doesn't presently have Green on the ballot to help get it onto the ballot for Nov, to keep this option open.

Address would handle that. Or not. Lord knows the Big Three won't carry his weekly address, nor any of the Cable Nets, but Social Media will. Explaining that Repub and RW obstruction is the reason things aren't getting done, while encoraging viewers to "write your congress critter" (while showing where to find the email address on the screen). One term could work pretty good by using the Fri. Night bully pulpit and calling out the opposition. That Weakly Sat. Radio Address has never worked.
"As you are all aware network tv won't cover our Fri. night chats. Well, fine. Thanks to social media we're able to make this happen. As you may know, Repub congress critter so-and-so said on Tuesday.... "

the little things you can do are more valuable than the giant things you can't! - @thanatokephaloides. On Twitter @wink1radio. (-2.1) All about building progressive media.

That would put the fear of god into the Democratic establishment that thinks he's just going to fall in line behind Hillary. They're still trying to short change him with the party platform, and even that's symbolic at best.

If he meets with the Green Party, engages in talks to be their nominee, and floats it as a trial balloon before the convention, the Democrats will be running scared and we could see some actual polling about how he would do in a hypothetical three-way race. Hillary would be forced to actually negotiate with something substantive, and if Bernie wanted to completely humiliate the party, he could demand a primetime speaking slot and use it to admonish the Democrats for their pro-corporate stance and announce his own third party bid on national television at the Democratic National Convention.

It would make for one hell of a show, suck all the air out of Hillary's candidacy, and it would get the pundits talking really quick. The only reason that I think it probably won't happen is because Bernie deals with these vultures in good faith, while they're just waiting for the right moment to stab him in the back.

It's just reality and it has everything to do with the corrupt system that Hillary represents. Jill Stein = Bernie Sanders.

Beware the bullshit factories.

I can't vote for Hillary. After living through 6 years of Nixon, 2 of Ford, being disappointed in Carter (but only while in office) 12 years of Reagan-Bush, 8 years of Clinton I, 8 years of Cheney-Bush, and 8 years of Lyin' Obama, I won't get fooled again. I refuse to try once again to rescue this nation from the Idiocracy it's become.

Anyone with a functioning brain knows that the last chance of the USA is Bernie Sanders. But if the voters would rather vote the sum of their fears, I say give them what they want. Be the victor Hillary or Trump, this nation will become merely a corporate asset to be exploited.

Let Obama succeed in packing the Court with Republicans. He's only getting the jump on both Trump and Hillary, who will do the same thing. Let Obama get TPP through the Congress. Hillary will if he doesn't, and Trump will have his veto overridden if he dares to oppose it.

I will share this fate, at least for a few years. Once Obamacare crashes and burns because of the corporatist opposition to it, my medical condition won't allow me to last very long. I'm already sick, so I will die quick.

It's those who are young and healthy, such as my grandkids, to whom I will apologize on my death bed. I will apologize on behalf of my generation, who abandoned the principles they claimed as long as their asses were at risk of being splattered in Vietnam, and once safe, instead worshipped at the Altar of the Shining City on the Hill. I will apologize for me, for maybe I could have done more to change the course of the nation since the neocons got their greedy mitts on it.

I voted early for Bernie here in CA. I gave him money, something I never did for anyone before. I talked him up whenever I thought I had a receptive audience. Short of hijacking the vote count away from the Hillarybots, I don't know what else I could have done for a Sanders win.

I am already planning on putting some kind of a sign in the back window of my truck: "Don't blame me - I voted for Bernie"
