AOC claims she'd voted Against the CARES Act

Truth or...Fantasy?

(This is by way of an addendum to GulfGal's estimable/awesome 'The Tragedy that is Unfolding' thread.

@matthewstoller Dec 20
Just so people are aware @aoc voted against the CARES Act and no one had her back when she did so.

@Tav_assoli Dec 20
Not according to @jimmy_dore she didn't. Back up your claim with solid evidence or can it.

@matthewstoller Dec 20
Jimmy's point is he wants some damn leadership from progressives. I'm not going to get in the way of that demand, because he's right to demand it. We progressives have a lot of re-thinking to do about our ideas and strategies.

@Tav_assoli
Hate to insist, Matt, but that was an evidence free claim then, yes?

House Passes $2 Trillion Emergency Relief Bill by Voice Vote After Hostile Debate’, March 27, 2020, townhll.com

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., was the only lawmaker to formally object, demanding evidence that a quorum was present and calling for a recorded vote. The protest lasted less than one minute and 30 seconds. Rep. Anthony Brown, D-Md., the presiding officer in the House on March 27, rejected Massie and, within moments, the bill cleared the House.

Massie asks for recorded vote. But not enough people rose to be counted. That blocked Massie. House passes bill without a roll call vote

....................................................

I’d thought of rebutting Ratigan and Dore’s ‘usefulness’ of the PPP, and giving examples from Eric Zuesse and others demonstrating the large corporate pork grants, but it’s done now, so I’ll bring just this small-dollar, but laughable gift:

“A political consulting firm co-owned by Rep. Ilhan Omar's (D., Minn.) husband, Tim Mynett, received more than half-a-million dollars in pandemic bailout cash—even as it was raking in millions from Omar's campaign.

The E Street Group, a D.C.-based company run by Mynett and Will Hailer, received $134,800 in Paycheck Protection Program loans and $500,000 in Economic Injury Disaster loans, new data show. Both funds were established to help small businesses cope with the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Mynett's firm, whose LinkedIn page says it has between 11 and 50 employees, received the aid as it was being showered with cash from Omar's campaign. Throughout the 2020 election cycle, Omar's campaign steered nearly $3 million to the E Street Group to cover advertisements, consulting, travel expenses, and production costs. It was by far the campaign's largest vendor.”

..............................................

You be the judge. And of course there's this chaos afoot now; coverage is everywhere; this is one of several at RT.com:

They are all criminally responsible for this genocide level of death, that did not have to happen. For the entire time Trump has been in office he has been dismantling the very departments, organizations and necessary infrastructure to be able to respond to a pandemic, and no one did anything to stop him.

This is how Pelosi will do away with Trump's request for more money.

unanimous consent - A senator may request unanimous consent on the floor to set aside a specified rule of procedure so as to expedite proceedings. If no Senator objects, the Senate permits the action, but if any one senator objects, the request is rejected.

I got sick a few years ago... In a way that was hard to diagnose,” he revealed adding that his insurance company “wouldn't pay” for the fruitless attempts to do so. Dore had to pay ‘out of pocket’, but every prescribed treatment would only make him feel worse.
....
Without the right treatment Dore got sicker. “Then one day I stepped off a step the wrong way…” Dore paused, visibly tearing up “…and my spine collapsed.”

The incident left Dore with dead bone in his hip and thigh, and made him three inches shorter. “Literally, I went from being 5/10 to being 5/7, just like that,” he said trying to lighten up his story.

“And I still had to go try to get treatment… And I was bankrupt. We didn't have any more money. So we had to take out loans, take out second mortgages, drained all our savings, the whole deal.”

Here he is talking about it. Alias has posted this video a few times, but just in case.

IMHO, there should never be a voice vote on any legislation, particularly one that involves the expenditure of public funds. Every Representative should be on record as to how they voted so that their own constituents know.

Read the whole thing.

After Hoyer's unanimous consent request was rebuffed, House Republicans attempted at the behest of the president to pass an amendment to reexamine foreign aid provisions in the newly passed omnibus government funding package. Democrats rejected the GOP amendment.

In a statement following the brief floor exchange, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said that "House Republicans cruelly deprived the American people of the $2,000 that the president agreed to support."

BS, Nancy. You never wanted it to pass because if you did you would have included the amount up front. You said it was a good bill even though it was not. But of course people are only blaming the GOP for this when it was Pelosi who passed on the bill that had more money and retroactive that people desperately need. You guys are playing games with people's lives! It cruel beyond words. It is a crime against humanity and the world is seeing America for what it truly is. People owe $5,000 on back rent. How much on mortgages? As Saager talks about here, the people will get screwed while landlords and banks get bailed out again. His China bashing is old. We did not get infected from China, but Italy. Let's talk about that.

It wasn't China who decided that he would ignore the recommendations from scientists on how to handle the vaccine. Looks like China did a lot of good things once they figured it out. His blaming China give Trump a pass. And governors and everyone else involved in herd immunity. Wake up Saagar.

"A bill that will upgrade US support for Tibet and penalize Chinese officials for interfering in Tibetan religious practices to appoint the next Dalai Lama has now been introduced in both chambers of Congress. The bipartisan Tibetan Policy and Support Act was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Marco Rubio and in the House by Rep. James McGovern.

Among other things, the new bill will sanction Chinese officials for trying to interfere in the Dalai Lama’s succession and will prevent China from opening a new consulate in the US until a US consulate is allowed in Lhasa."

And I was like: no, Trump's a lazy asshole with more than a few screws loose. Why the persistent mischaracterization? Couldn't you all focus upon Congress? Did any of you pay the least bit of attention to what was in the CARES Act? Well that was then.

Later, after the election, Congress tried to pass a bill with no stimulus. You likey? say the Democrats. Bernie Sanders went public: "No bill without a stimulus." Then they offered a $1200 stimulus which, due in part to the Biden administration's penchant for austerity, got cut to $600. That passed. Remember here we're still talking about bills each of which contains a few warehouses of pork shoveled into the super-rich class's asset portfolios before they can gamble everything away in the various asset markets. The part about this whole dust up that I think has been the most depressing is the number of people running interference on behalf of AOC. But I always question whose permission AOC got when she does call out dem leadership or is in anyway critical of Pelosi like she was in the Intercept interview when she called for new leadership. BTW Saagar did a video on the age of the leaders in congress. All of them except Schumer are older than Biden who will be the oldest pres ever when he takes office. And we have seen that Joe ain't all there. Neither is Pelosi, "Good Morning. Good Sunday Morning."

Schumer spent 18 years in the house before he moved to the senate. He has been in congress since the 80's. A lifetime of sucking off the government teat has made Chuck a powerful and rich man. Pelosi a rich woman and the rest of them? Even Bernie marches to the defense industry's tune when he continues voting for the F-35 and other defense budgets. Seems to me he has towed the MICC line on foreign policy which has always been the glaring problem with him. Sorry, little tangent rant, but when AOC calls someone out, I bet she has gotten permission to do it. She keeps nailing the GOP for all that's wrong with the current bill, but she won't call out Pelosi for killing the one before the election that had retroactive unemployment in it as well as other good things.

Today Pelosi brought the bill up using unanimous consent which everyone knew it would only take 1 republican to block it. Apparently they come back on the 28th to vote in person.

under the dore video above a commenter recalled:

They are acting like Trump is just now saying he wants more money for people. Trump was saying he wanted more for stimulus checks before the presidential election. Nancy Pelosi, with Joe Biden's clear approve, turned down a 1.8 trillion dollar stimulus package to make sure no bill would be approved before the presidential election. Trump said he would rather have a $4,000.00 stimulus, that $2,000.00 was the minimum acceptable.

so your take was a profound prophecy, although pelosi went from stand-alone recorded vote bill to 'R's blocked unanimous consent' pretty damned lickety-split. a partisan set-up one has to think.

wendy davis's picture

'Democrats want rushed vote on trump’s $2000 coronavirus aid checks', in which pelosi had promised ‘by recorded vote’.

now it reads: ‘Coronavirus aid at risk as U.S. lawmakers block Trump's changes’:

“Democrats in the House of Representatives sought to increase direct payments to Americans included in the bill from $600 to $2,000 per person as part of a coronavirus economic relief initiative, acting on one of Trump's requests. Trump's fellow Republicans, who oppose the higher amount, blocked that effort.

Republicans sought to change the amount of foreign aid included in the package, seeking to address another one of Trump's complaints. Democrats blocked that request.

'HOW IRONIC'
Congress could keep operations running by passing a fourth stopgap funding bill before midnight on Monday. To successfully do that, lawmakers would need Trump's cooperation at a time when he is consumed by his bid to remain in office beyond Jan. 20.

The stopgap bill would not include coronavirus aid, however.
Many Democrats say the $892 billion coronavirus aid package is not big enough to address the pandemic, and they have welcomed Trump's call for larger stimulus checks.

"How ironic it would be to shut down the federal government at a time of pandemic crisis, the very time when government services are needed the most," House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer said at a news conference.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the chamber would hold a vote on the stimulus-check increase on Monday.

The House will also on Monday try to override Trump's veto of an unrelated defense-policy bill.’

Pelosi Statement on House Republicans Blocking Unanimous Consent Request to Increase Economic Impact Payments, December 24, 2020

“Today, on Christmas Eve morning, House Republicans cruelly deprived the American people of the $2,000 that the President agreed to support. If the President is serious about the $2,000 direct payments, he must call on House Republicans to end their obstruction.

“House and Senate Democrats have repeatedly fought for bigger checks for the American people, which House and Senate Republicans have repeatedly rejected – first, during our negotiations when they said that they would not go above $600 and now, with this act of callousness on the Floor.

“On Monday, I will bring the House back to session where we will hold a recorded vote on our stand-alone bill to increase economic impact payments to $2,000. To vote against this bill is to deny the financial hardship that families face and to deny them the relief they need.

“Hopefully by then the President will have already signed the bipartisan and bicameral legislation to keep government open and to deliver coronavirus relief.”

https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/122420

the ‘unrelated defense policy bill:

Pelosi Statement on President Trump Veto of National Defense Authorization Act
December 23, 2020, https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/122320-0

“The President’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act is an act of staggering recklessness that harms our troops, endangers our security and undermines the will of the bipartisan Congress. For 60 years, the NDAA has been passed on a bipartisan and bicameral basis.

“In a time when our country was just targeted with a massive cyberattack, it is particularly hard to understand the reasoning behind the President’s irresponsibility.

Disturbingly, Trump is using his final hours in office to sow chaos, including by denying our servicemembers a long-overdue pay raise and hazard duty pay; our families paid family leave, child care, housing and health protections; and our veterans the benefits that they need and deserve. The President’s veto also deprives our country and allies of tools to protect global security – including for cyber-security.

“Trump’s veto violates our national values, as it would block action to rename military bases and infrastructure named after those who served in the Confederacy – which is supported by an overwhelming majority of the American people, by House and Senate Democrats and Republicans and by our servicemembers and top military leaders.” [???]

“Next week, December 28, the House will take up the veto override with bipartisan support.”
