AOC claims she'd voted Against the CARES Act
Truth or...Fantasy?
(This is by way of an addendum to GulfGal's estimable/awesome 'The Tragedy that is Unfolding' thread.
@matthewstoller Dec 20
Just so people are aware @aoc voted against the CARES Act and no one had her back when she did so.
@Tav_assoli Dec 20
Not according to @jimmy_dore she didn't. Back up your claim with solid evidence or can it.
@matthewstoller Dec 20
Jimmy's point is he wants some damn leadership from progressives. I'm not going to get in the way of that demand, because he's right to demand it. We progressives have a lot of re-thinking to do about our ideas and strategies.
@Tav_assoli
Hate to insist, Matt, but that was an evidence free claim then, yes?

(This is the correct link; it took me hours to find: https://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video/rep-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-vote..., although she’d intimated the same on DemoracyNow!, and The Intercept totally believed hers having been the Sole No vote...so far.
What do you suppose she meant when she told Rapinoe: "We were able to pass this bill yesterday, and it's somethin so, we're making baby steps, baby progress"?
Rapioe calls her "one of the architects" of the billhttps://t.co/FH3as860QV

'casting lonely votes is not something that anyone relishes, but representing the hardest hit communities in the country, I knew that that bill was not structured to solve the biggest issues that we had." So the voice vote secrecy allowed her to call herself the architect of it'
‘House Passes $2 Trillion Emergency Relief Bill by Voice Vote After Hostile Debate’, March 27, 2020, townhll.com
Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., was the only lawmaker to formally object, demanding evidence that a quorum was present and calling for a recorded vote. The protest lasted less than one minute and 30 seconds. Rep. Anthony Brown, D-Md., the presiding officer in the House on March 27, rejected Massie and, within moments, the bill cleared the House.
@ChadPergram
Massie asks for recorded vote. But not enough people rose to be counted. That blocked Massie. House passes bill without a roll call vote

I’d thought of rebutting Ratigan and Dore’s ‘usefulness’ of the PPP, and giving examples from Eric Zuesse and others demonstrating the large corporate pork grants, but it’s done now, so I’ll bring just this small-dollar, but laughable gift:
“A political consulting firm co-owned by Rep. Ilhan Omar's (D., Minn.) husband, Tim Mynett, received more than half-a-million dollars in pandemic bailout cash—even as it was raking in millions from Omar's campaign.
The E Street Group, a D.C.-based company run by Mynett and Will Hailer, received $134,800 in Paycheck Protection Program loans and $500,000 in Economic Injury Disaster loans, new data show. Both funds were established to help small businesses cope with the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Mynett's firm, whose LinkedIn page says it has between 11 and 50 employees, received the aid as it was being showered with cash from Omar's campaign. Throughout the 2020 election cycle, Omar's campaign steered nearly $3 million to the E Street Group to cover advertisements, consulting, travel expenses, and production costs. It was by far the campaign's largest vendor.”
..............................................
You be the judge. And of course there's this chaos afoot now; coverage is everywhere; this is one of several at RT.com:
Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks. At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 — Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it! https://t.co/Th4sztrpLV

I thought only one member was needed to demand a roll call vote
Maybe that's the Senate
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
i just bingled to
discover the answer to your Q (and failed), but apparently a quorum (218 members) must be present. senate votes are far easier to record, but in the house there are voting stations with buttons denoting Yea, Nay, and Present.
and i have no idea if this bloke knows what he's talking about:
I no longer believe anything
anyone in government tells us. NOTHING, NADA, ZIP. Progressives, democrats, republicans, tea party whackos, I no longer care what any of them have to say. They should all be facing a firing squad, full stop.
They are all criminally responsible for this genocide level of death, that did not have to happen. For the entire time Trump has been in office he has been dismantling the very departments, organizations and necessary infrastructure to be able to respond to a pandemic, and no one did anything to stop him.
[video:https://youtu.be/TNaXDXIkbS0]
This is nothing short of criminal negligence and gross dereliction of duty causing a massive amount of unnecessary death!
C99, my refuge from an insane world. #ForceTheVote
a bit off topic,
but i know we all get your gist and your reasoning.
I will leave this here too
This is how Pelosi will do away with Trump's request for more money.
Bernie voted for another inadequate bill. Gee who'd a thunk it?
your take may be prophetic,
but here's the Shiny Brand we're discussing:
but i reckon she and nancy don't talk much, eh?/s
AOC needs a smack with the clue stick
If, that is, there's anything left of the idealistic crusader we once believed she was. If she hasn't been totally consumed by the Congressional Blob.
And if she has...The People voted her in, The People can vote her out.
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
yes, she does.
we used to call it 'with an ugly stick' as kids, though. i'm fortunate not to have bought into her brand, but then i paid close attention to two or three of her constituent detractors on twitter.
OTOH, many 'progressives' at other sites are still deluded about her, and i suppose it's partially die to the fact that she's had two documentaries made of her life, 3 action hero comics, on the cover of Rolling Stone w/ pelosi and omar and ?, and finally the cover story of Vanity Fair. that was an epic puff piece she couldn't have paid for. seriously. but she's being groomed to run for Prez as soon as she can, as the VF 'story' showed.

so thank you for the cliffs Notes version.
This video is so poignant
Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ~ President John F. Kennedy
I am too much of an outsider, but to me the
promised $2,000.00 stimulus check just seems to be a matter to make those, who suffer the most, believe that those, who don't suffer, care for them. It's kabuki theater to me.
https://www.euronews.com/live
you're only too correct;
and IF they pass a stand-alone bill, a one-off 2 grand check is still pathetic as can be. it's still a big Fuck You to those of us in such dire need, and dying of the Plutocrat's gravy spills.
a commenter at wsws.org had mentioned Trump's gambit, and said it was just to schmooze The People before his coup. but really, b at MoA has some links to the fact that he's asked for it for months, and that it was joe biden who'd blocked it.
what a #ShitHole government we're trying to survive.
AOC's own actions belie her claim
1) AOC claims to have voted against the CARES Act which passed on a voice vote.
2) Audio tapes of said voice vote do not appear to have a female voice as part of the Nays.
3) AOC refuses to withhold her vote for Pelosi as Speaker in order to get a floor vote on Jayapal's Medicare for All bill.
4) AOC votes for the latest pork laden monstrosity of a "COVID stimulus" bill which provides even less relief to the people than the awful CARES Act that she claims to have opposed.
Methinks AOC doth protest too much and she did vote for the CARES Act.

They all knew they were voting on $600 even if they
didn’t read it as they say. But how is it possible that congress passes bios that they have no idea what is in them? Now we know why Pelosi said that they had to pass the ACA to see what was in it. Now we know why.
your #2 is fascinating;
i hadn't known there was such a tape. i ♥ your Twitter handle, and response to dr. fishbones!
clearly, as per martina navratilova, she's demagoguing the CARES act, tells how how get your 1200 bucks, acceding to rapinoe's 'you're one of the architects of the bill' while AOC smiles that big grin in assent.

yeah, wait until you see what IS in the $1.7 trillion (?) omnibus bill. on edit: $1.4 trillion. the 900 Billion covid relief was passed separately.
many thanks, GulfGal. i agree whole-heartedly.
Just to be clear
IMHO, there should never be a voice vote on any legislation, particularly one that involves the expenditure of public funds. Every Representative should be on record as to how they voted so that their own constituents know.
Edit to add. Thanks, re my sig line.

Unless I am dreaming,

it seems that

what i'd meant was:
Nancy D-Bring on the Guillotines ; )
I heard it twice.

cliff notes, anyone?

I am so fed up right now. I will never vote for another Democrat at any level again.

More games
Read the whole thing.
BS, Nancy. You never wanted it to pass because if you did you would have included the amount up front. You said it was a good bill even though it was not. But of course people are only blaming the GOP for this when it was Pelosi who passed on the bill that had more money and retroactive that people desperately need. You guys are playing games with people's lives! It cruel beyond words. It is a crime against humanity and the world is seeing America for what it truly is. People owe $5,000 on back rent. How much on mortgages? As Saager talks about here, the people will get screwed while landlords and banks get bailed out again. His China bashing is old. We did not get infected from China, but Italy. Let's talk about that.
It wasn't China who decided that he would ignore the recommendations from scientists on how to handle the vaccine. Looks like China did a lot of good things once they figured it out. His blaming China give Trump a pass. And governors and everyone else involved in herd immunity. Wake up Saagar.
Thank you for expanding on my comment

Omar is now in favor of bringing the bill up for a vote
Then she linked some website that was something like health care access something. I’ll try to find the tweet. It’s a doozy.
It’s all games and they go on regardless of who gets hurt. Or how many.
I called Omar out on it

AOC again shows that she’s progressive
ATA girl. Show Pelosi that you know how to play ball for the capitalists.
oh, my;
and it's straight out of the H.R. 133 Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 that she hadn't had time to read:
https://savetibet.org/us-congress-expands-tibet-support-programs-in-2021...
"A bill that will upgrade US support for Tibet and penalize Chinese officials for interfering in Tibetan religious practices to appoint the next Dalai Lama has now been introduced in both chambers of Congress. The bipartisan Tibetan Policy and Support Act was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Marco Rubio and in the House by Rep. James McGovern.
Among other things, the new bill will sanction Chinese officials for trying to interfere in the Dalai Lama’s succession and will prevent China from opening a new consulate in the US until a US consulate is allowed in Lhasa."
and the dalai lama's speech of gratitude was glorious, even just by way of a scan. i went to see him decades ago when he'd come to boulder, co, and was delighted that he smoked cigarettes! 'to be more of the earth' or close, he'd laughed.
Merry Christmas if you can. we're trying here...
on edit: oopsie; her missive was dated july 6; my mistake. still...same shit, different month.
holy hell, and FWIW:
a good gig, if you can get it.

lol!
or french?
too tired not to shorthand;
apologies, but see this addition at the bottom. partisan gamesmanship.
snoopy was right ,and i haven't read her new additions yet.
I said I'd be back for good news!
All the panicky VBNMW people and their calmer. more leader-like relatives the Nice Liberals with Big Egos were like: "Trump's a FASCIST! He's a DICTATOR!" And I was like: no, Trump's a lazy asshole with more than a few screws loose. Why the persistent mischaracterization? Couldn't you all focus upon Congress? Did any of you pay the least bit of attention to what was in the CARES Act? Well that was then.
Later, after the election, Congress tried to pass a bill with no stimulus. You likey? say the Democrats. Bernie Sanders went public: "No bill without a stimulus." Then they offered a $1200 stimulus which, due in part to the Biden administration's penchant for austerity, got cut to $600. That passed. Remember here we're still talking about bills each of which contains a few warehouses of pork shoveled into the super-rich class's asset portfolios before they can gamble everything away in the various asset markets. And who, WHO dares to give Congress its comeuppance for this crap? Donald Trump!
Okay that was fun. Back to writing the book! Has anyone here read Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "Herland"?
The ruling classes need an extra party to make the rest of us feel as if we participate in democracy. That's what the Democrats are for. They make the US more durable than the Soviet Union was.
@Cassiodorus well, I tried to make it
L-bleeping-L,
you said it right, then. (i did pay attention to the CARES act, though, as would many of us who are aware of the Plutocrat's Eternal Corporate Shenanigans.
glad you poked your head out for Good News; fancy writing another book!
What I hear is "do something, anything".
Jimmy Dore has resonated because he in the end is demanding somebody anybody with any power to do something. Even if it is something "performative" which could ignite a people's revolt. Jimmy is right that people in mass are at the desperate end. And that the young progressive reps need to step up as there is nobody else.
And as I read twitter, etc, there is no stomach for a fight as people die in the hundreds of thousands. This is total class war, and the Squad has retreated into IdPolitics.
my apologies, amigo.
i'd responded to you hours ago, but no matter how many times i refresh the page, it's gone. i must have pressed preview instead...or something.
at any rate: well said, and i particularly admire this:

Let’s just put it this way
No one who is a threat to the establishment gets the kind of launch AOC did, with fawning magazine pieces and a Netflix doc, etc. I hate to say it, but that was my clue she wasn’t going to be the crusader people expected her to be (and I still hoped she might be and that I was wrong.)
The part about this whole dust up that I think has been the most depressing is the number of people running interference on behalf of AOC. If the criticism was unfair, I would understand but Dore and others have been very careful to have examples for what they are taking her to task on. I don’t know if people are blinded by the hype or if they are so desperate to believe anyone is on their side.
Idolizing a politician is like believing the stripper really likes you.
Both I think
....but I think more the latter.
“ …and when we destroy nature, we diminish our capacity to sense the divine,and understand who God is, and what our own potential is and duties are as human beings.- RFK jr. 8/26/2024
well thought, well said.
my rule of thumb is that too many (most?) heroes turn out to have feet of clay, so: Buyer Beware. from alxeis tsipras to jeremy corbyn (re: assange), crikey, see: Obomba!
and yes, jimmy dore has a large stage, her other detractors...not so much.
iirc, it was caitlyn johnstone who'd said of greta thunberg: 'those who the elites praise non-stop...deserve further scrutiny' (or close that).
I have thought the same things
But I always question whose permission AOC got when she does call out dem leadership or is in anyway critical of Pelosi like she was in the Intercept interview when she called for new leadership. BTW Saagar did a video on the age of the leaders in congress. All of them except Schumer are older than Biden who will be the oldest pres ever when he takes office. And we have seen that Joe ain't all there. Neither is Pelosi, "Good Morning. Good Sunday Morning."
Schumer spent 18 years in the house before he moved to the senate. He has been in congress since the 80's. A lifetime of sucking off the government teat has made Chuck a powerful and rich man. Pelosi a rich woman and the rest of them? Even Bernie marches to the defense industry's tune when he continues voting for the F-35 and other defense budgets. Seems to me he has towed the MICC line on foreign policy which has always been the glaring problem with him. Sorry, little tangent rant, but when AOC calls someone out, I bet she has gotten permission to do it. She keeps nailing the GOP for all that's wrong with the current bill, but she won't call out Pelosi for killing the one before the election that had retroactive unemployment in it as well as other good things.
Today Pelosi brought the bill up using unanimous consent which everyone knew it would only take 1 republican to block it. Apparently they come back on the 28th to vote in person.
good reminder:
under the dore video above a commenter recalled:
so your take was a profound prophecy, although pelosi went from stand-alone recorded vote bill to 'R's blocked unanimous consent' pretty damned lickety-split. a partisan set-up one has to think.
early this a.m. this title on the msn homepage had read:
'Democrats want rushed vote on trump’s $2000 coronavirus aid checks', in which pelosi had promised ‘by recorded vote’.
now it reads: ‘Coronavirus aid at risk as U.S. lawmakers block Trump's changes’:
Pelosi Statement on House Republicans Blocking Unanimous Consent Request to Increase Economic Impact Payments, December 24, 2020
https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/122420
the ‘unrelated defense policy bill:
Pelosi Statement on President Trump Veto of National Defense Authorization Act
December 23, 2020, https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/122320-0
so...pelosi went from stand-alone bill w/ recorded votes to...R's block unanimous consent?
this is the Rush, or is it partisan politics once again?
Partisan politics. It's ALWAYS partisan politics.
PeLOUSY and the Do Not Cares would gladly see half the population die, if it means putting a hurt on Trump.
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
my cynical guess...
is that pelosi asked an R rep to demand unanimous consent.
p.s. did you by chance watch the DORE video on the subject i'd posted upthread? i'm unable to watch videos as my new normal/s, but just now...even more so.
