Alternative news

In response to a recent diary in which the integrity and ideology of Der Spiegel was raised, I would suggest the following site as another viewpoint, a site the ideology of which is hard to miss. Sometimes, the site proposes a different viewpoint, coming from a Marxist analytical tradition. It is not the only one out there, but my time is limited.
One aspect of this site is that news is reported from several countries, including Germany, France, and Turkey, the latter at present morphing into a totalitarian state.
I would be happy to hear about other alternative press outlets.
Peace and love be with you, reader.

Thanks for the link...
The less US MSM news I hear the better.

It's a good site, especially
considering that they are Trots and refer to others using Marxian analysis as "Stalinists." If your ignore the sectarian squabbles, there is a lot of accurate news that doesn't get reported very often.
SocialistWorkers.org is a site that is very good on labor struggles that go unreported in the USA and around the world.

My issue with WSWS.org
The remain with their feet encased like concrete in 1930s verbiage, which tells me that they don't know how to spread their ideas without the usual phrases. Some of their most basic concepts involve practices that too many of today's citizens don't experience anymore.
Let's take "worker solidarity" just for starters. I happen to be a unionized workers, and am active in the activities of my Local. Less then 10% of the membership can be bothered to alter their daily schedules long enough to attend a monthly meeting, yet they bitch loudly when they feel the union isn't representing them.
WSWS.org does cover labor news better than the corporate media, but they need to update their language to cover what is over what they believe should be. They might reach more people without those concrete boots they insist on wearing to the pool.

I agree with your statements concerning outdated speech.
I also agree with you that workers with a union contract too often do not want to involve themselves with the work of the union. They seem not to appreciate the struggle it took to get organized and jump through all the hoops to negotiate the contract. Or, if they were involved in the formation and then recognition of their union, they seem to feel their work is done when they pay their dues. In my experience, the work never lets up because management is after either a decertification or a marginalization of the union.

Unless a union member has
an issue to bring before the union there's no point in going to a meeting (other than the "social experience" of meeting the Leadership and other rank and file regulars). My dad went 6 or 7 times a year, mostly, I believe, for the cheap pizza. In my 14 years plus I never went. If an issue came up I did what my supervisers asked, but told them I would be getting with the union to sort it out the next day.

To me, the main point about attending
union meetings is to keep those whom you elected honest and on your side. A packed union hall month after month tells the officers that the rank and file are watching and we'd better work on their behalf, steer clear of socializing with management, and shun business unionism.
Just a union member filling a seat is a positive thing for the local's effectiveness. Asking questions of officers is even better.

I use a wide range of sources, but
some of the best alternates to mainstream media are the publications from journalism schools which still use the Code of Ethics. A short list:
Columbia Journalism Review
The Center for Investigative Reporting: Reveal News
Investigative Reporting Workshop
The Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism
Local colleges and universities may also have journalism departments that report on issues affecting their state and communities. The following is a good example:

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.--Aristotle
If there is no struggle there is no progress.--Frederick Douglass
thanks, Aardvark,
I saw this site a couple of times, but didn't stay long enough to make a decision if I should go over there regularly.
Others have said that they are stuck in the language of the years long by-gone. I wonder if the site can attract young readers. Most socialists I have watched on conferences seem to be from a generation in their seventies and older.
BTW, I have no skin in defending Der Spiegel other than I don't like throwing a whole publication under the bus for a couple of authors. If I were to do this I would end up not reading any print press media at all, I guess.

actually Aardvark, you are right, it would be
an alternative news site to use. Saw the article collection on the front page and found it not at all "stuck in the past". I will try them out. I mixed the site up with something else, I vaguely remember being a US socialist paper. Sorry for that.
