"The League of Women Voters is withdrawing its sponsorship of the presidential debate scheduled for mid-October because the demands of the two campaign organizations would perpetrate a fraud on the American voter," League President Nancy M. Neuman said today.
"It has become clear to us that the candidates' organizations aim to add debates to their list of campaign-trail charades devoid of substance, spontaneity and honest answers to tough questions," Neuman said. "The League has no intention of becoming an accessory to the hoodwinking of the American public."
Why does everyone continue to believe that this is a serious endeavor? That these debates are created to enlighten and inform the American people?
This is, quite clearly, a reality TV show designed to make money and serve the corporate sponsors.
Big Corporate & the Oligarchs love it when self governance gets a black eye. No faith in government, and no-content government is good for their freedom to profit and bottom line.
The viewing public is the product being sold. We are not the customers of the corporate media, we are the product. That old business adage of "the Customer is Always Right"? They ain't talking about us.
The customers of the corporate media are big giant corporate advertisers -- those are the cats that are always right.
When is the last time you've ever heard "the Product is Always Right"? The idea that "the Product HAS Rights" is not even on the corporate media's radar.
We're being played, completely, and I really wish people would wake the fuck up.

and calls out Bush and Dukakis, although it certainly could apply to today's debates.
I admire the LWV for sticking to their principles; OTOH,
the CPD took over without missing a beat and the charade went on. I wish the LWV would hold a debate on their terms and include all major candidates (i.e., those on enough state ballots that they could conceivably win enough electoral votes) and if the mainstream candidates don't show up, go ahead with exposure for the rest and publicize the fact that the main two would not agree to a substantive discussion.
I do think people understand that these "debates" are show over substance. Will anyone be discussing issues today that were addressed last night? Or discussing style as if they'd watched the Kardashians?

All the MSM should, but you're right, they wouldn't.
Unless the LWV has some clout behind the scenes. I'm sure the mainstream candidates apply pressure that they won't get their debates if they air the LWV's. OTOH, if we could convince the MSM that we are fascinated by the third party candidates, they would air it if they were convinced the ratings would be better than those for the mainstream. It would be a tough sell. We'd need a huge petition.

The orchestration of it all is so way over the top, it's the neoliberal/neocon elitist 1%er's of NYC, DC, LA, Silicon Valley that live in this bubble wrapped induced world. The rest of us the "flyover country" basket of losers, deplorables etc.etc. are merely what they claim to be consumers of this shit, as it's all meant for our consumption.
The WH correspondents dinner could be seen as a confirmation of this.
And maybe just maybe the aiding and abetting of all this BS is all just another corporate media fallacy that the people are awakening to.
