Moving Closer to War

BY PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

The Obama regime, wallowing in hubris and arrogance, has recklessly escalated the Ukrainian crisis into a crisis with Russia. Whether intentionally or stupidly, Washington’s propagandistic lies are driving the crisis to war. Unwilling to listen to any more of Washington’s senseless threats, Moscow no longer accepts telephone calls from Obama and US top officials.

The crisis in Ukraine originated with Washington’s overthrow of the elected democratic government and its replacement with Washington’s hand-chosen stooges. The stooges proceeded to act in word and deed against the populations in the former Russian territories that Soviet Communist Party leaders had attached to Ukraine. The consequence of this foolish policy is agitation on the part of the Russian speaking populations to return to Russia.  Crimea has already rejoined Russia, and eastern Ukraine and other parts of southern Ukraine are likely to follow.

Instead of realizing its mistake, the Obama regime has encouraged the stooges Washington installed in Kiev to use violence against those in the Russian-speaking areas who are agitating for referendums so that they can vote their return to Russia. The Obama regime has encouraged violence despite President Putin’s clear statement that the Russian military will not occupy Ukraine unless violence is used against the protesters.

We can safely conclude that Washington either does not listen when spoken to or Washington desires violence.

As Washington and NATO are not positioned at this time to move significant military forces into Ukraine with which to confront the Russian military, why is the Obama regime trying to provoke action by the Russian military?  A possible answer is that Washington’s plan to evict Russia from its Black Sea naval base having gone awry, Washington’s fallback plan is to sacrifice Ukraine to a Russian invasion so that Washington can demonize Russia and force a large increase in NATO military spending and deployments.

In other words, the fallback prize is a new cold war and trillions of dollars more in profits for Washington’s military/security complex...

Washington also demands that Russia renege on the reunification with Crimea and hand Crimea over to Washington so that the original plan of evicting Russia from its Black Sea naval base can go forward.

In other words, Washington’s demand is that Russia put Humpty Dumpty back together again and hand him over to Washington...

The presstitute Western media and Washington’s European puppet states are supporting this unrealistic demand. Consequently, Russian leaders have lost all confidence in the word and intentions of the West, and this is how wars start...

Washington’s arrogance is unprecedented and is capable of driving the world to destruction.  Where is Europe’s sense of self-preservation?  Why hasn’t Europe issued arrest warrants for every member of the Obama regime? Without the cover provided by Europe and the presstitute media, Washington would not be able to drive the world to war.

@on the cusp ...and how did it get there?

I recall, years ago now, seeing a headline on their sidebar there about "The Coming Corporate Takeover of Progressivism" (not verbatim), and now I am kicking myself for not at least bookmarking it at the time.

@The Liberal Moonbat sent them to the asylum. They fixated on Russiagate, then Jan 6, then a vaccine crusade, now, Putin is Satan. I can't stomach going there, so can't say if it is completely goofy, or mostly goofy.

@on the cusp Obama's fake 'change you can believe in' administration was mostly responsible for this nightmare in the Ukraine. Kerry took over for her. She is scary as hell and a psycho to boot. Seems their trying to rehabilitate the evil witch and drag her back on stage for another go. Obama like most presidents was a figurehead, a talented one at that. As someone who fell for his hopey changey bs and worked for him in the primary until his FISA vote I gotta say what a lying dick. Saw plenty of evidence later like his snarky talk to the Third Way and other asshole so called Democratic nasty org's.

When Hillary was appointed Sec of State I really saw the handwriting on the wall. I cared what was on her computer in the bathroom. Anyway any President is just a joke. As is the concept that this is in any way a democracy. None of them are worthy of support. At this point politics are totally useless. Maybe they always were. But hey I love this world and think perhaps if this evil country falls apart it might be a good thing for both nature and humans. I still vote cause I vainly hope primarying might work. lol.

@shaharazade give that witch a thought!
I will vote against our local sheriff. Not a single race from city to federal has any effect on my life except the sheriff. They all work for their donors. Except the sheriff, and sometimes, a sheriff can prove me wrong.

@The Liberal Moonbat

but that doesn’t explain why so many of the people who post to the site changed so much. Paul Street used to be very good, but maybe Trump derangement and Russia Russia broke his mind. That happened to quite a few writers who I used to follow. It’s the power of propaganda on minds. Sad though.

However St. Claire still does great work.

After the USSR broke up Clinton helped Yeltsin get elected president so that he would open the country to privatization and let Russian and foreign oligarchs steal everything that wasn’t nailed down. Putin put a stop to their actions and the neocons never forgave him for it.

But now they are trying to not only do it again, but make sure that the European poodles don’t make deals with Russia and cut the neocons out of becoming their own countries.

Michael Hudson has been writing about this and his recent essay goes even further.

Let’s jump straight into the fray. Hudson begins with an analysis of the “take the money and run” ethos, complete with de-industrialization, as 90 percent of US corporate revenue is “used to share buybacks and dividend payouts to support company stock prices.”

That represents the apex of “Finance Capitalism’s” political strategy: to “capture the public sector and shift monetary and banking power” to Wall Street, the City of London and other western financial centers.

The whole Global South will easily recognize the imperial modus operandi:

“The strategy of US military and financial imperialism is to install client oligarchies and dictatorships, and arm-twist allies to join the fight against designated adversaries by subsidizing not only the empire’s costs of war-making (“defense”) but even the imperial nation’s domestic spending programs.”

This is the antithesis of the multipolar world advocated by Russia and China.

In short, our current Cold War 2.0 “is basically being waged by US-centered finance capitalism backing rentier oligarchies against nations seeking to build up more widespread self-reliance and domestic prosperity.”

Hudson presciently reminds us of Aristotle, who would say that it is in the interest of financiers to wield their power against society at large: “The financial class historically has been the major beneficiary of empires by acting as collection agents.”

So inevitably the major imperial leverage over the world, a true “strategy of underdevelopment,” had to be financial: instrumentalizing IMF pressure to “turn public infrastructure into privatized monopolies, and reversing 20th century pro-labor reforms” via those notorious ‘conditionalities’ for loans.

Worth a full read.

After Obama’s brutal coup in Ukraine and Russia took possession of Crimea they were hit with lots of sanctions that hurt Russia’s economy and that was when they started making the things that the sanctions forbade and started working with China on a monetary system that bypassed the dollar. And then Biden’s puppet masters stole $300 billion from Russia just after they stole $800 billion from Afghanistan and that was the last straw for not only Russia, but China and many other countries. This will eventually crash the dollar and good lord I hope I’m dead by then.

Kim dot com also has a nightmarish essay on how high our debt is and how it’s unsustainable and what could happen when it crashes.

I wonder what Obama’s goals were when he overthrew the Ukraine president. Was this plan in his thoughts when he did it or are the Biden neocons just taking advantage of Russia’s actions? I think he did or it was cooked up just after Russia started building NS2 so Germany could get cheaper gas from them.

Yeah thanks for posting this article. I doubt counter punch would post it today because it seems to have sold out after the former owner died. I haven’t looked at it in months and rarely read much of it. Russia Russia sure did a job on people’s brains.

His clear, objective voice is severely missed. Meanwhile, John McCain teamed up with Obama in 2016 to meet with the Azov leaders in Ukraine to plot war with Russia. He promised that the US and NATO would arm and train Ukraine Nazis to beat Russia, which after all was "just a gas station masquerading as a country". Russia, after being finally fed up with thousands of ethnic Russians being murdered in the Donbas, took the bait this year. The problem for Obama's and Biden's plan is that Russia is phenomenally strong, economically and militarily. Ukraine is being ground to bits, the realization of which is just coming to the forefront. Russia will take back all of the parts of Ukraine that are historically and culturally part of Russia and leave a runt Ukraine under Russia's control. Meanwhile, and very sadly, tens of thousands of young Ukrainian men will be killed and even more wounded. Imperial America is a global nightmare for the world. Are there any American politicians that can come to their senses, or is the propaganda and greed way too strong?

Capitalism has always been the rule of the people by the oligarchs. You only have two choices, eliminate them or restrict their power.

That's because Hillary Clinton was supposed to be elected to her righteous throne in 2016. This war would have started in 2018, and was delayed only because Trump did not have the extreme hatred of Russia and the insatiable thirst for war as the mainstream political class of the US. Eventually he gave in to Russophobia but stopped short of a proxy war. Not a problem for either Clinton or Obama or Biden. There's not much positive that I can say about the Republican party, but the Democrat party is dead to me.

that my close friends and family, who receive their news of foreign affairs and current events from NPR and PBS news, do not know about the civil war in Ukraine, do not know about Azov and other Nazi armed groups in Ukraine, have never heard Victoria Nuland's phone call with Geoff Pyatt, and have never seen photographs or video of slaughtered children in Ukraine during the 8 year war, I have to asked why the purposeful, constant, failure to report this news isn't a war crime.
