My personal response to Barbara Boxer's claim that the youth are voting for Bernie due to the "grandfather effect"
Once again, Barbara Boxer has come out to patronize the youth by saying that Bernie's tapped into their votes because he reminds them of their grandfathers. (). I wanted to share the response I posted on facebook because this touches on a subject that is deeply important to me. I'm toying with the ideal of maybe expanding this and submitting it to a site like Medium (hey, maybe it could actually go viral and change a few minds). But without further ado, here is my facebook post:
---
So anyone who has seen my facebook page in the last 6 months knows that I'm really passionate about this election, but I wanted to share some really, really personal familial history and thoughts that I wrote today in regards to Barbara Boxer patronizingly saying that young voters are voting for Bernie because he reminds them of their grandfathers.
In my case, Barbara’s not technically wrong, although her logic is wrong. My maternal Grandfather grew up dirt poor; he came to this country in the 30s with nothing. He was proud to serve America in World War II and he was proud to be a socialist during the 1950s despite the fact that the government would often stop by his places of work and often succeed at getting him fired (and he was still proud to be an American even after that). My Grandfather never, ever, ever, ever stopped fighting for his political beliefs even when the cost was heavy or the going was tough. Most importantly, the bottom line was that the overarching belief that my Grandfather was fighting for was that everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or lack of, nationality and near anything else you can think of, should be fairly and equally.
I see this same drive in Bernie Sanders. I see it when I look at pictures of him getting arrested fighting for civil rights in the 60s, I see it when I read about him Bernie expanding housing protections for transgender citizens of Burlington in the 80s, and I see it now when Bernie talks about trying to break our cycle or military regime change, changing our criminal justice system and protecting our environment. I see it in nearly all of Bernie's policies because it's his underlying core belief. Yes, Bernie Sanders reminds me of my grandfather and that’s one of the many reasons I’ve voting for him. But this sentiment isn’t borne out of familial love, but rather over a shared commitment to equality and the passion and nerve to keep fighting even when the road is the long and dark. I would fight for any candidate that I think truly shares these qualities because these are the qualities we need far more of in our government, the White House and our everyday lives!
That said, after all that, Bernie actually reminds me more of my mother, but that’s a whole nother post!
---
Please give me any feedback on whether you think it would be worth it to expand it a little and try putting in on a site like Medium. If I expanded it, I would talk more about my mom and her similarities to Bernie and lightly touch more some of the areas where I take issue with Clinton due to the fact that I don't see the same underlying commitment to helping others as a primary (or secondary...or tertiary....) motivation. If possible, I would also include a nice picture that of my mom and I in Bernie's official Los Angeles office that we took just before canvassing Mother's Day weekend)!

I wonder if Senator Boxer
I wonder if Senator Boxer would talk down to those voters who support Hillary because she reminds them of their mothers, grandmothers, daughters...
And young women support Sanders
because they want to get laid by BernieBros.
It's a pattern.
Ha.
I liked my gramps more than my grandma, so I am voting for Trump. Wait, there are other issues? I guess you can alienate voters when you retire, but it is not clear to me how this helps HRC, which I assume is the reason for a remark so stupid it is offensive.
Why the concerted effort by leading Democrats to alienate voters and help Trump? I just don't understand cutting off the nose to spite the face. I will still grudgingly vote for HRC, but I think others will be alienated and support Darth Trump instead.
smh
Peace out, tmp.
I will never vote for her.
'Well, I've wrestled with reality for thirty five years, Doctor, and I’m happy to state I finally won out over it." Elwood P. Dowd "
Because they actually believe that people will
just not bother to vote. They are fine with people disenfranchising themselves. Their tunnel vision only allows them to see that some people will not vote for HRC, not that they might actually vote for Trump to stop her.

Great post! But Boxer as usual is idiotic.
Remember when "the youth" just liked Obama because he was young and hip?
Now, they apparently love Bernie for the exact opposite reason, because he's old and not hip like their grandpas - right.
They can never believe our young people might just be basing their support and their votes on legitimate reasons like policy - and it's incredibly insulting.
Psst, Barbara - the youth also read stuff, so insulting them isn't a super good way to bring them over to your side.
Bingo! My kids talk about policies
If they were choosing a candidate who reminded them of the only grandfather figure they have, it'd be the loud, abrasive racist one. He's not as cocky, but just as embarrassing in public!
No Ms. Barb, our youth actually know more about Bernie's policies (and your Queen's - so be afraid) than most people in my generation and probably yours. They get it from YouTube, mostly directly from the candidates' own mouths - the same place my son learned to play bass guitar, and to tie a neck tie. So, try again.
My, she certainly is insulting - she thinks we're awfully stupid
And frivolous. Young people couldn't care about the issues (not that I'm young, actually). They must have some foolish, trivial reason - certainly not character, integrity, or policies.
You make a very good point, talking about your grandfather's character. Probably that would just go right over her head, though. I'm not sure she could grasp the concept. It isn't money or looks.
Nope. It's because he reminds me of a Rabbi.
He doesn't talk down to me or act like he's BETTER than me. He doesn't condescend when he disagrees, he merely educates respectfully.
He doesn't tell me what I can read or listen to, like SOME Senators I can mention, Ms. Boxer...
And he's funny as hell, but his humor makes me think.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Jewish-oriented Humanism!
It's the core philosophy of many Rabbis and Bernie. It's also the underlying principle that drove my grandfather, and one that I aspire to orient myself towards as well!
the wisdom of 'The Fathers"
Very similar to the phrase in "The Little Prince"
Don't believe everything you think.

Well even if
it were true so what I don't have a problem with grandfathers being one myself. My grandfather was one of the best persons I ever knew,he taught me most of my better qualities honesty, loyalty being respectful and a few more and he practiced what he preached. Yes Bernie does remind me of my grandfather and that's a good thing!
Wow. The party leadership is off the rails
This is insanity, someone needs to tell them to get a grip. They're treating the entire Millennial generation as if they're a bunch of Tea Party fanatics. Way to go to build the Dem base for future elections!
They're going to have to accept the cold hard truth that this generation of voters is much more liberal and much better educated and connected. These voters are the future Dem Party, if it is to continue. Their values are the same ones Boxer, Clinton, et al used to espouse before they sold out.
If they can't get over this hurdle and allow Millenial voters into the Dem Party, it really has no future. There's already one Republican Party, no room for a second one.
"If you can't eat their food, drink their booze, take their money and then vote against them you've got no business being in Congress."
And
young women support Bernie so they can meet boys.
And there's a special place in hell for women who support Sanders.
And now we have boxer and her words of wisdom. These sorry asses just can't keep their mouths shut. They need to slither back into the septic tank...
BernieOrBust...
Gramps remembers when democrats
were democrats, not just socially tolerant Rockefeller republicans.
Yeah no-Rockefeller Republicans tried to be responsible stewards
of the commons. What we have now are neolibs that are ready to sell off every molecule of the common good for the profit of their paymasters.
Issues, Barbarba, Issues
Tell us why your careless conniving candidate is better than Bernie on the issues. Tell us about your daughter's marriage to HRC's brother, and their child, your grandson whom I'm sure you love as much as I love my grandson. I've never heard you speak of your familial relationship to HRC when you go commando on Bernie. Or don't you want reminders of HRC's brothers?
Great essay, Dyherwolf. And yes, of course, include more about your mother! Thank you for sharing.

For boxer it's personal.. !!
She has been planning HRCs coronation for 3 years
Starting with that "letter" urging HRC to run (gimme a break)
The letter we always hear that Elizabeth warren signed
boxer organized that letter Event... 3 years ago
And it was supposed to be smooth sailing after that
BUT... BERNIE HAPPENED (Smile)
And Boxer has been pissssssssssssssed ever since.
Kind of entertaining to watch
Gooooo BERNIE
shake them windows
Rattle them doors
Orwell was an optimist
It's all in the family, Boxer's daughter is married to Hillary's
brother.
And there it is in a nutshell. eom

World War II maybe has something to do with it
The fighting for fairness and never betraying one's conscience, for both your grandfather and Bernie. It was a war against atrocity. The soldiers saw it and Bernie's father's family was wiped out by it. I wonder if Barbara Boxer is fighting for her conscience or for her ego.
Beware the bullshit factories.
Actually, my Grandfather held these views before WW II,
but given WW II was extremely important since both he and my Grandmother had family killed in the Holocaust (in fact, my Grandmother may have potentially been the last surviving member in her immediate family as my mom said she very, very rarely spoke of any of her family members in a way that would even imply that some might still be living).
One thing certainly clear,
youngers do not look at Hillary as a mother or abuela.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Ew, Hillary as a mom
Seems like she'd be an overbearing control freak, and mean.
I saw it decades ago towards Bill lol. It was some sort of musical presentation, and the prez was all smiles and tapping his foot, wiggling like it was all he could do not to get up and dance. Stone woman sat straight backed, with almost a scowl on her face. I suppose it could have had something to do with Monica, but it still struck me as she's the mean Mommy Dearest, and he's a giant child.
my grandfather fought in World War I
and was a sheriff in Texas for over two decades. He used to say, "You can burn me for a fool, but you won't get no ashes." So, yeah, Bernie does remind me of him. Not a perfect human and not trying to pretend to be anything he wasn't, but he did believe in putting the bad guys in jail. He hated corruption, too - the thought of doing an investigation, all that hard work, and then watch a crooked judge let someone off infuriated him.
Oh, he also said (excuse me but I actually wrote a book about him) - his deputies all remember him saying "You can tell the truth a thousand times and it is always the same. But you can't tell a lie the same way twice."
katherine, please
May I have the name of the book about your grandfather? I would like to read it. I love biographies about real people, normal good people.
It is available at Amazon but message me for a copy
It is called "No Ashes" - for that quote, which in my small town, every single person associated with him. I self-published and have a few boxes of copies. It is a quick read(I tried to write so the people with little education who gave me hours of interviews could follow it.)
I had read over fifty years of my hometown newspaper, studying crimes when that awful dragging death of James Byrd happened in my hometown. I kept thinking CNN should have called me because I probably knew more about crime in that county that any other living person.
Now THAT would make a great piece
an inside view of that crime-I can see that published in the Atlantic. You really should write it, why depend on outside "journalists" to ask you for the truth?
What the hell?
Why does every establishment Democrat have to come up with such stupid rationales for why people support Bernie? They see everything through the lens of identity politics. "Oh, you must support Bernie because he reminds you of your grandfather." "Young women support Bernie because that's where the boys are." "Millennials support Bernie because they haven't done their homework and it's fun to protest." "You need to support Hillary because she's a woman and you are, too." It's such ridiculous bullshit.
We're literally telling them why we don't support Hillary or the status quo, and they refuse to believe us. It's liberal values and principles, stupid. It's the economy, stupid. It's income inequality, stupid. It's the destruction of the middle class, stupid. It's unnecessary wars, stupid. Democrats insist on constructing these simplistic fantasies built on stereotypical ideas about the electorate that fit into their established worldview. If they even spent a second in self-reflection and questioning their own assumptions, they'd get it. It's not rocket science.
... give us a li'l Grampa history, here --
When Cicero had finished speaking, the people said “How well he spoke”.
When Demosthenes had finished speaking, the people said “Let us march”.
My cousin shared a beautiful picture with me when I posted this
on facebook. It's an almost 100 year picture of my Grandpa, her grandmother (my Grandpa's sister) and my great grandparents (who I had never seen pictures of before). So now I'm especially glad that I shared this; my mom is going to flip tomorrow when I show her the picture when we go canvassing for Bernie!
I love my grandfather.
But Bernie is NOT my grandfather. My gramps was a Eisenhower republican which today is probably classified as right of center. Plus a proud Teamster. But no. Still not Bernie. Boxer has done wonderful work but her Shillin for Hil is clouding her judgment on this one.
"Eisenhower Republican"? "Proud Teamster"? Hell, he's waaay
to the left of Hillary
Eisenhower tried to warn us
About the MIC. He was wise in many ways and we as a people were not listening.
My chidren's ggrandfather landed on Ellis Island
just another poor Jewish man from what is probably now Slovakia. And no one else near-related ever made it out. All gone. Lost history. It was not discussed en famille except as a statement of presumed fact.
