They have decided we're going to keep it

This is a bone-chiller video. I was a scientist, until Federal funding disappeared. I may actually have some plasmid DNA in my freezer, but not this.

the Spanish Flu Virus. They were digging up bodies in the native villages in Alaska thinking that those who died of the flu in 1918-19 could still harbor the virus under the frozen conditions in the arctic.

My first though was, why the hell would you want to "find" this virus? The only answer to me was they wanted to see if they could weaponize it. After all, during WWI, it was certainly a game changer. Young, health people dropping dead in a few days. It ravaged the world. What a good little virus!

mainly it is to see how the virus has mutated, what made it so deadly, and how we acquired immunities to it.

Some of our armed forces overseas are still variolized. Our children are not. Feel safer now? It's out there. Millions of dollars spent every year predicting the influenza strains and coming up with a vaccine. yearly. Flu. There are enough DNA sequences of viruses online to grab bits and synthesize in a medium-cost lab. Tick. Tick.

What a fiasco that turned out to be. They were warning everyone to get vaccinated predicting the sky was going to fall! Nothing - crickets.

Now we have had the EBOLA scare - O MY GOD! It if everywhere it is going to get you!!!!! Nothing - crickets....

Now we have ZIKA!!! How scary is that. Everyone is going to get it and if you are pregnant you will have children with small heads. That should scare the crap out of everyone. Now we are going to spend BILLIONS on zika. To do what? It is just another scare tactic to funnel money to Big Pharma to pretend they are creating vaccines against this stuff.

It is all BS.

My cousin Don was one of the people tested in an aids study because he apparently carries a gene that a small percentage of the population has. It first came to his attention when he realized he had not gotten aids even though everyone around him died of it. He appears to be immune.

It apparently comes from having an ancestor who contracted and survived the bubonic plauge. I have the gene as well I was one of the relations tested to narrow down the ancestral line that was passing it down.

I think it very likely that other diseases may create the same effect. My grandfather was a survivor of the Spanish flu. Neither my mother or I have ever had any flu considering I have worked in the germ ridden public all my life that is very unlikely without some form of inherited immunity.

Again it would be a tiny percentage of people possibly not large enough to be seen on the radar.

But, well, don’t worry, right? Weaponized pathogens from U.S. research centers like Fort Detrick could never be put to malicious use—what’s that? Anthrax? (rolls eyes and scoffs) What anthrax? When?

NY Times: Errol Morris 'Demon in the freezer'

Indiewire write-up: Errol Morris’ New Short Documentary ‘A Demon in the Freezer’ Reveals Smallpox Concerns — Watch

Morris delves into the ongoing debate over smallpox, which has been considered eradicated for decades now. Stocks of the virus remain for research purposes, but many believe these last remaining samples should be destroyed lest they end up in the wrong hands and/or end up being used as a biological weapon. [...]

Food for thought indeed, let's reduce the weapon making capabilities that's what I say. Thanks riverlover.

In addition to his Lyme disease herbal treatment book, he has books on antibiotics and antiviral herbs.

In general, I'm a big believer in herbal treatments for things, because herbs work synergistically, and don't cause antibiotic resistance to develop in microbes - because each herbal treatment has slightly differing levels of each constituent. They also don't poison our environment, and cause fish to change sexes...

I know a lot of people don't think herbal medicine works, but after all, the bulk of our pharmaceuticals are nothing more than one extracted element from a successful herbal remedy.

These two books are in my permanent library, and I highly recommend all his books:

ring things with different attachments. Patentable because its a Cl vs a Zn or O2 addition. It matters for patents.

But even so, most - though not all - originate from some initial plant substance already in nature (or did at one point, though they keep moving further away from the original), which is then "modified" and patented, and which can no longer be assimilated by the environment.

Listening to reggae here, back from introducing the pup to the 1/3 acre enclosure. She can stick her head through the fence holes. Very exciting and weird for her. I am getting a good leash hand, as she adjusts. Dog flapper doors are still a no-deal.

seems like a productive topic to pursue for the Resilience series and library. Think herbals and natural medicinals were addressed in an early essay?

Go for the basics. I worked with a molecular clone of the virus FIV derived from a Pallas cat. It would propagate in bacteria, and the resulting plasmid (13KB of retroviral DNA) could infect cells, not domestic cats. Blood products from FIV-infected domestic cats could infect other domestic cats. I had an attenuated retrovirus in DNA form. And a Patent. Which did not translate into a commercial vaccine, but worked as a diagnostic for different felines who carried the retrovirus. Zoo cats. Similar terminal symptoms to AIDS.

One of the accessory genes on this sequenced virus is called vif (viral infectivity factor, no art in the name). I could modify cell lines to express the vif protein without viral promoter control. It actually made those cell lines slightly more resistant to putting out new virus particles. Much work for nothing good at the end. And thus ended my life in science. And my income. I was paid by US taxpayers through my working career, I want to thank you all. It was a good run.

Some of us, like me, don't have video capability. It would be really sweet of you if you would include a short synopsis in the essay so we know what it's about. Thanks!
