Smore open thread

Good morning everyone.
Overcast and a cool 60 degrees this morning. Bracing for our first big rain tomorrow, and then a couple of days with showers. It should help with the wildfires around the PNW and start greening things up a bit.
A serious burn ban this season, even small campfires are prohibited. I hope this doesn't become a regular thing every summer.
What is a camping trip without a campfire?
Aside from the ambience of sitting around a fire with hot dogs or marshmallows on a stick, how are we to introduce our kids to the power and danger of open pit fires with out a place to have one? Turning on the gas fireplace is not the same as gathering up kindling and building a fire. It is a valuable skill that is a rite of passage and could some day save your life. Think Survivor, the show.
Maybe it's the Cub Scout in me.
E2 is going in for her back surgery today, scheduled for 2 pm, so I will probably be hosting in spurts from the waiting room.
It will keep the worry factor down a little.
She needs this pain to go away. But she is more afraid of becoming addicted to the pain meds. So much so she will only take a half pill maybe once a day when the pain gets really unbearable.
I understand her concern as addiction to painkillers is widespread and a serious danger to public health. But so is constant pain that makes you pale and lose weight excessively. That's not good either.
Surgeon says it's just a routine procedure and she should be up and about and simi painfree in a week.
Yay!
But I'm now solely responsible for the harvest from this point on.
It's ok though, half has already been picked and either cooked and processed or given away.
So let's open this thread up for comments. I will be at the keyboard for a few hours this morning.

Hey, good morning & good luck to e2, may it all go smoothly
and successfully. Have laid out a serious schedule for myself myself which includes almost no internet time and I'm already behind, so
be well and have a good one

E2 and I both
thank you for the well wishes.
I understand your intent to limit screen time. I hope that includes the boob tube (does anyone still use that term?) as there is nothing of value on there. Just brain rot.
I find surfing the net rewarding and educational. If I stay on history articles and future subjects, like the new space telescope that just went up.
A lifetime of learning is what blows my dress up. Or maybe I should say kilt, even though I don't own one.
Thanks for the post and well wishes to you also.

Good morning, e1
Best wishes for e2's surgery. Pain pill addiction is dreadful. My Mom was addicted before Drs. even knew the pills were addictive and classified as controlled substances. If you overdose and don't die, you come away with serious brain damage. I hope she gets surgical relief and maybe tries DMSO topically. There is a lot of info out there that it is a viable therapy for spinal injury. It is inexpensive, has no bad side effects, so nothing ventured, nothing gained. Who knows anymore?
JtC's biopsy results not only found him cancer free, but negative for the presence of cells that tend to turn cancerous over time.
Now, does he have any excuse not to wash the dishes?
Opinions, anyone?
Keep us posted on the surgery, friend.

E2 has an old friend
who is addicted to hydrocodone and refuses to acknowledge it. He and I are the same age, but the physical and mental differences are stark. He is declining fast.
I think this is influencing her fear of pain pills and addiction.
I think it also fuels my concern re: extreme weight loss, he from drug addiction, she from excruciating pain.
They both have a road to recovery and she is taking it (surgery). He needs intervention and treatment.
Great news on the biopsy results, mixed feelings on the dishwashing.
Thanks for the good news and post.

Low sinks. I'm an age shrunken 6'4", now about 6'3"
with 60's back injuries. Too much time in or at architectural standard sink, especially 50's era standards, gets my lower back quite cranks, but I do it anyway because it's part of the agreement here.
be well, both of ya, and have a good one

Best of luck with
the surgery! Rooting for you both...
FWIW, I did the bulk of the pain management for both of my knee replacements and my recent hernia surgery with CBD, and/or CBD/THC edibles (20mg/2.5mg)- thanks to living here in CO. For some, those can work better (and with fewer side effects) than any opioid. Opioids don't work very well for me, as I have an inherited genetic issue with metabolizing them. So I stop taking them as soon as I get out of the hospital, in favor of my carefully-curated edibles. But everyone's mileage will certainly vary.
Moved forward from last night's thread. Has anyone else experienced this latest annoyance? Apparently, some numb-nuts very recently published a list of old-people email addresses on the dark web (presumably with the thought that we old folks are more easily scammed), and I'm in it. I have now received over 100 phishing and/or social-engineering-virus-payload messages in the last month or so, usually claiming to be American Express, Chase, or Paypal, often with the From: forged to be from my email address, and generally in very broken English. Sometimes 6 or 7 a day. Ungodly.
The enshittification of email has taken another massive step downward. I'm definitely not a fan of all the script-kiddies who think that this sort of activity suddenly makes them 3l33t HaX0rs or some such foolishness...
It's nothing compared to the DDOS attacks of which C99 has long been a victim, of course- thanks to JtC for all his efforts in combatting those. But this is a true sudden uptick in spamesque (and often dangerous) dreck.
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
I get similar emails daily.
Worse, I am in some Medicare scam network. I get calls on my cell phone and at the office insisting I confirm if I have Part A and B. Other seniors I know have tried to report their calls to the cops. Only seniors are being called.
I would take a club to whoever sold my info to these scammers.

Yeah, those are definite phishing attacks
I'm starting to suspect it could be part of an effort by ideological opponents to flame us by doxing our info to third parties. Remember that little country in the middle east that we are gifting 3.8 billion dollars a year to and said country is instituting a PR program reaching into the millions to make us like them again?
Or it could be our own taxpayer funded agencies throwing a wrench into our personal lives.
We already know they are watching us like hawks.
Like data centers and flock cameras, it's only going to get worse.
Will be checking out the CBD and the DMSO (h/t to on the cusp).
Thanks for stopping by.
