08/31 Open Thread - Eat Outside Day
Your eyes are fine, it's supposed to look like that, it's a Renoir
On this date in 1795, the British seized Trincomalee from the Dutch, ostebsibly to keep it away from the French. This is a favorite excuse of imperialist nations. The Brits also bombarded Copenhagen in 1087 ostensibly to keep the Danish-Norwegian fleet out of French hands and attacked a French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir in 1940 allegedly to keep the Italians and Germans from getting it.
Whatever, just remember to stay drunk
“Be always drunken.
Nothing else matters:
that is the only question.
If you would not feel
the horrible burden of Time
weighing on your shoulders
and crushing you to the earth,
be drunken continually.Drunken with what?
With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you will.
But be drunken.And if sometimes,
on the stairs of a palace,
or on the green side of a ditch,
or in the dreary solitude of your own room,
you should awaken
and the drunkenness be half or wholly slipped away from you,
ask of the wind,
or of the wave,
or of the star,
or of the bird,
or of the clock,
of whatever flies,
or sighs,
or rocks,
or sings,
or speaks,
ask what hour it is;
and the wind,
wave,
star,
bird,
clock will answer you:
"It is the hour to be drunken!”
-- Charles Baudelaire, Paris Spleen
Do, however, remember to stay away from boats while you're at it. Failure to do so would put you on Rimbaud's turf, not Baudelaire's.
On this day in history:

1957 – The Federation of Malaya gained its independence from the UK.
1962 – Trinidad and Tobago became independent.
2016 – Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff was removed from office.

Like the Baudelaire poem you presented
.
We eat outdoors most days this time of year
so it is easy to observe this holiday. Also, cook out -
weather allowing. What kind of name is Big Tiny?
Are you being affected by the Plaskett wildfires?
Thanks for the OT!

Good morning Cap'n Q. glad you liked the poem.
It's nice you get to eat outdoors a lot, lately it's been a bit too hot here, though we still get to cook outdoors a goodly amount.
The Plaskett fires are roughly 166 highway miles away, but thanks to the configuration of the CA coast, they are well east of us as well and the fires magnify the onshore breezes so we get nothing here.

Good morning...
It is going to be too hot to eat outside today. Would be a good day to cook outside though.
Staying drunk might work for some, but I wouldn't advise it. Now, staying drunk on poetry would be okay. Drunk on virtue is a puzzle. None the less enjoyed the poem.
Thanks for the OT and all the music!

Good morning Lookout. Eating outdoors is very weather
dependent, cooking outside is a bit less so. Being drunk all the time possibly leaves one homebound, which is not overly practical, but it is a catchy poem all the same.

Good morning, el!
We can't eat outside in this heat, but some lower temperatures are coming in a couple of days due to t-storms. The tropical storm gives us a high likelihood of rain for 6 straight days. The excuse for not eating outside then will be to avoid getting struck by lightning.
I have to head to work to round up unfinished cases and get them over and done, so I won't have to work anymore. The last furlong of The Belmont.
Have a great day, friend!

Good morning otc, both heat and wet can put the kibosh
on outdoor activities, especially eating. Hope that your T-storms aren't too bad. Sorry about the work, but it is good that you're getting done with it.
