OT WE 15 JUL ~ Journey to Tibet

~
OIP-3234339831.jpg
Home of Mount Everest the highest point on earth.
~

Bounded by Turkestan, Mongolia, China, Burma, India, Bhutan and Nepal the 'roof of the world' averages an
elevation of 14,800 feet. That's almost 3 miles high. Peopled by majority Tibetans there are also Lhoba,
Sherpa and Han Chinese populations. Buddhism is the dominant religion.

People_of_Tibet13-e1413532346833-2498541115.jpg

Tibet is governed as an autonomous region of China. Farming supports many of the people, although
tourism and mountaineering add to the economy. The language is Tibeto-Burman, a subset of Sino-
Tibetan. Buddhism is the dominant religion.

Another tidbit on Tibet are the long horns used by the
Tibetan monks for ceremonial purposes. Imagine that sound
bouncing around the mountains. Locally called dungchen ( དུང་ཆེན།) meaning big conch.

Talk about getting high...Everest is the max on Earth.

Lookout Mountain is a mere hill, but at one time the Appalachians were as large as the Himalaya.

Everything changes...

Working on straightening up the barn today. Hope all is well. Thanks for the OT!

Might be Nepal, and ought to have an “h” in it, but it’s close enough for country music… (;-)

considering the theme. How high are you?
Must be at least 5000'. I'm about 300' above
MSL here. Not exactly high ground.

@QMS

GPS tells me that I'm at 6250ft elevation above MSL. I'm south of Denver proper, on the northern slope of the Palmer Divide (the little east-west spine of the Rockies that sticks out of the Front Range onto the plains, separating Denver and Colorado Springs). Makes for some very interesting weather, at times, at least when it isn't just being a desert... It also is a great place to live to best train for Olympic-caliber drinking: when I get to sea level, I'm good to go.

Just got back from an appointment with my now-former retinal specialist- his office was close enough that I could just walk to it. Unexpectedly, he just fired me. So, time to move on to another provider, one who actually is willing to engage on trying to work towards any possible improvement, however marginal, rather than simply telling me "Sucks, but you're blind, get over it". Didn't even bother doing the angiogram to see if the blood flow past the clot has improved- just kept me sitting for an hour and a half, and then delivered the "get off my lawn" message. Not a fan of the medical profession at the moment.

And to think that they wonder why folks like me get bitter and prickly. Why, indeed! Gotta admit, I'm more than a little pissy right now.

@usefewersyllables your dr. had no concern for your serious condition other than to direct you to just deal with it.
It is getting harder and harder to trust a dr.
May you find one that wants to help you.

Are difficult to find anymore. I don't even try.
Just had my annual Medicare exam, the pre-check in
took longer than the office visit. Of course, all of the 'offers'
for tests and follow-ups I refused (and vaxxes). Not playing
that game anymore. Better things to do with my life.

Good luck.

videos. Great music. Haven't really checked any news except Guardian today, so little to contribute.

From yesterday, A participation trophy statue for Trump: https://boingboing.net/2026/07/13/giant-participation-trophy-appears-on-...

A reference point, fwiw

the 'roof of the world' averages an
elevation of 14,800 feet.

Mount Whitney's summit, the highest point in the contiguous US, is at 14,505 feet. So, the average over there is higher than Whitney. There are only 15 widely recognized "fourteeners" in California, Shasta, White, and 13 in the Sierra Nevada range.

Did a mountain pass thru the Rockies at about 10,000.
It was plenty high enough for me. The panoramic view
was incredible. Soaring eagles and mountain goats as company.
Oh, and the damn Marmots tried to steal my shoes.

Cheers!

gate on White mountain at 11,683 (summit is 14,252). Highest that I'm sure of is Papallacta pass in the Ecuadorean Andes, actually a bit above that because we hiked a bit further up to one of the antennas to look for some birds and they are at 13,123' on up to 14,300', but I'm pretty sure we didn't hike an additional 1000 feet beyond the first antenna. That's as far as I know we got, but we were "birding the andes" so our main concern wasn't the altitude.

other treats to be had up there, as well. Took some family members on the cog railway to the top of Pikes Peak to see the view, years back. The Chamber of Commerce says that that is 14,115ft, and I believe them.

The day was solidly overcast, but the cloud bottoms were well above us, even at that altitude. We got off the railway and were walking towards the visitor's center, and my sister-in-law said "Oh, that's neat", and I turned to look at her- and her hair was standing straight out on end... I grabbed my wife's hand, and yelled "RUN!", as I dragged her towards the visitor's center. About 30 seconds after we got safely inside, we had the damndest dry lightning storm, with probably 15 or 20 strikes on the (many!) lightning rods they have on the roof of the building. It was a great, and very noisy, show to *not* be a part of...

They know how to do lightning protection up there- they take many, many strikes per year, and even so, the visitor's center burns down periodically. (;-) The panoramic view was nice, once the storm passed and the overcast started to break up. But we didn't dawdle looking at it until we were safely ensconced away on one of the cog railway cars: at least those are grounded by the rails.

The pictures in this retrospective article are well-known, from California's Moro Rock in 1975. When playing at altitude, be safe up there and keep a strong weather eye out, even on a fairly clear-looking day!

That is a beautiful picture of the mountain!
I am giving travel tips to the County Judge who is taking a short trip to Dublin to watch a g'son play an exhibition football game there.
Tips, so far include staying in safe areas, and get help at the hotel front desk on areas to avoid; take a travel umbrella and rain jacket with a hood; take a sip of Guinness before you order one and pubs will usually give you a sample; book a Celtic music/dance show (a la Lord of the Dance); look for trees to appear in highway esplanades that we here would remove (they are believed to be homes of the Little People); and dirt mounds in fields, believed to have housed The little People; prepare to eat potatoes at every meal.
Thanks for the OT, friend!

but then again, I'm about half Irish by lineage.
My g'mother was from Scotland and so insisted
we were Scottish. Named us kids all after clans and
famous figures. Mother (mostly English heritage)
basically copped the attitude - whatever. Tried to
keep peace in the family. Didn't work out so well.

@QMS a fun trip, but if you dig down into history, as I did, it can get extremely depressing. A massacre here, one there, sort of tour.
The judge is just doing the fun trip thing for a few days.
My paternal grandfather became the favorite town drunk, with folks sending him free beers as he told stories about escaping Ireland by hiding on a ship headed to NYC when he was 11 yrs old. He did participate in the Oklahoma Land Rush, but his Irish blood was actually English highlander blood. I guess it wasn't as funny to be English?

@QMS I found this map www.map.airquality.com about six years ago when we had unbreathable ashy wildfire air for several weeks. Use two fingers to zoom in and out. Your air quality isn’t great right now but the air around the Great Lakes looks horrible.

Wonderful song to wake up to! Thanks for the intro to a new artist. I had only listened to Alan before. I'll remember this song.

I found a Mandarin version of some of the lyrics. Not sure of its accuracy. Then I used the google translator, and tried to interpret it myself, as an amateur.

You look forward to yourself and your family, never growing old; you gaze up awaiting the moonrise, with the eyes and ears of an old man; there sown its universe; heart boundless, yet fleeting and ephemeral.
