Friday Night Photos Floating Museum-Tools Of War Edition

Happy Friday everyone. Welcome to Friday Night Photos your once a week escape from the day to day insanity of the world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music or whatever else you find of interest that helps tune out the madness.

Not only is an aircraft carrier a floating city it is also a mobile military airfield carrying 70-75 aircraft. Due to the limited space, navy aircraft have to be able to fold their wings or rotor blades in order to fit as many aircraft onboard as the limited space will allow. The different types of aircraft include attack aircraft, fighter aircraft, anti submarine aircraft, airborne early warning radar aircraft, and transport aircraft.

Aircraft are shown in chronological order during the Midways active duty from the mid 1940s to the early 1990s.

During flight operations the first aircraft to leave the flight deck is a rescue helicopter that will circle the ship and is ready to rescue any aviators that may end up in the drink during the launch and recovery cycle. After that the rest of the aircraft in the cycle are launched. Approx. 2 hours later the aircraft in the next cycle are launched. Once they have been launched the aircraft from the first cycle are recovered. The number of cycles and the time of day or night they begin and end varies from day to day.

Thanks so much, SP! I haven't seen our airwing aircraft in so many years. We used to call A-6s tadpoles. Fortunately for the pilots and shipmates it was peacetime. Unfortunately, for the pilots and others it was still quite dangerous. We had A-7s too.

We had Vigilantes with us. Lost one. Lost two A-7s cold cats off the pointy end. Two tadpoles in a midair in the stack. Lost another A-7 bombing smoke. One F-4 lost. 9 deaths, some survived. Lost 2 more A-7s ashore ops, both fatal. Who's counting?

I heard sea stories always begin "no s..t," is that true?

Great pics! I even liked seeing the hangar bay and ready room. I didn't fly, not aircrew.

First song I ever heard in Korea, no lie, Rainy Yongdong Bridge in Yongdong the first night. I read some army soldiers got arrested in an Itaewon brawl this week, go figure. Like nothing's changed in how many years?

"Pull up, Pull up! Wave off, wave off!"

@soryang
The A-6 always reminded me of a dragonfly. We lost one on launch when both engines flamed out right as they fired the catapult. The plane went into the drink and broke up before the crew could punch out. Neither were found.
I was on the Constellation from 77-81. It was all F-14s, A-6s and A-7s at that time. No more F-4s. I was ships company assigned to AIMD repairing yellow gear.
Thanks for the song. The bridge in the background looks a little like the Golden Gate bridge.

@janis b
is a nick name for the equipment used to support and maintain the aircraft when it's on the ground. It's actually known as ground support equipment. See the next to last photo in the second set of photos. In the photo from left to right is a nitrogen cart, aircraft hydraulic jack, tow tractor, and an a/c unit.

Yes, it doesn't look like that suspension bridge on the set in the video. There's a photo at the link.

Janis, you're really making me laugh tonight, in a good way. But I have had people express skepticism.

There is the art of war, I guess. Your photos exhibit the engineering ingenuity and X factor in form involved, so I guess you can consider it an art? I wish though it was all only contained in museums with accompanying images of its destruction, for the purpose of documenting the horror as well.

You can see in your photo of the cockpit (I wonder where that word comes from), the inspiration for sci-fi films and fiction, most of which probably comes from the author’s very keen observation of nature and man, and the talent to reflect it. I haven't read or seen much of that style, but what I have seen always amazes me by how the current is already present in the past.

On that cheery note, I wish you all, and the world a better future. At least we know and share with people who care. Enjoy the weekend all.

It would be nice if we could all learn to get along and not have a need for the tools of destruction.

@janis b
We get morning fog around here quite often. It usually burns off around mid morning. In the right setting it can make a great photo. Nice shot of Venus and Jupiter. I saw on line recently where they were going to be in close proximity.

jets is uncanny and brilliant. I really was fascinated just looking at how they folded the aircraft to fit them onboard the carriers. All that brainpower being wasted on something as stupid as war. I didn’t have time to comment last week, Sp. I read the diary and just shook my head at how enormous the ships were. I recall eating lunch at one of the outdoor cafes at Port Canaveral. There was a modern submarine docked nearby. This is the Space Coast so we’re talking serious military security. This was pre barfo Elon Musk and Maggot brained (tRump). The sub was partially submerged, but I have to tell you, it was huge. Anywho, thanks to you and jb for the visuals. Thanks also soryang for the Korean music video though I know zilch with the language. Smile Hope you all are nowhere near the bad weather, and staying cool. Endless Summer is here with a vengeance. Everyone take good care. Rec’d!!

@orlbucfan
Sadly, man has been wasting brain power on war in one form or another for most of our history.
That sub might have looked huge by itself, but put it next to an aircraft carrier and it won't look so huge. Weathers has been nice here in the lower left. Except for yesterday and today with temps in the mid to low 90s, the last few weeks the temps have been in the low to mid 80s.
