Friday Night Photos Safari Park Edition
Happy Friday everyone. Welcome to Friday Night Photos your once a week escape from the day to day insanity of the world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music or whatever else you find of interest that helps tune out the madness.
Hooray! We've managed to make it through another week without the whole world completely imploding. Keeping my fingers crossed that smarter heads prevail and that holds for a lot longer.
Locally it's been a week of early morning fog and hot sunny afternoon's here in the lower left. I've had the windows open at night to keep the house cool. Normally I don't have to do that until May or June. If the last few weeks are any indication it's going so be a blazing hot summer.
Some old familiar faces and some new friends from my last few visits to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
Flying Fox. Southeast Asia, Australia, East Africa

Tree Kangaroo. Eastern Papua, New Guinea

Southern White Rhino. Grasslands and savannahs of Southern Africa

Southern Gerenuk. Southern Somalia to Tanzania

Female Lowland Nyala. Southeastern Africa
Red River Hog. Rain forests of West & Central Africa

Red-flanked Duiker. Savana woodlands of West & Central Africa

Your certainly are lucky to be situated where you live in order
to provide us with various images on a weekly basis.
BTW
I watched a baseball game with the Padres yesterday and the weather looked pretty good.
Hi, humphrey
I love living in San Diego, but it does come at a cost with some of the highest real estate, utilities, and gas prices in the nation.
The weather was nice yesterday. The Padres, not so much. Got their butts kicked 8-2. At home no less.

Also too...The San Diego Zoo Safari Park must be huge in order
provide a habitat for the animals that your excellent images showed us.
The SDZSP
encompasses 1800 acres located in San Diego's north county. They do an excellent job of providing as natural environments as possible for the animals.

Hi, Q
Love the goat. I could use a few of them to eat all the weeds on the hillside in my backyard.

ETA: Sorry for this off-topic posting to the photo-feature essay, I mistook it for an open thread. Those are some amazing closeups of zoo animals.
Hi, lotlizard
No problem posting this here or apology needed. As my opening paragraph always says, post anything you find of interest that helps tune out the madness and I certainly found this interesting and a nice break from the madness. More content like this in the future will always be welcome.

Two tiger myths
The band Lee Nal-chi does a performance of Tiger Comes Down with the Ambiguous Dance Company in a Modern folk fusion performance. I assuming that it comes from the myth of a sea turtle that called a rabbit down the mountain, for a deceptive purpose. He erroneously called the rabbit 虎 "Ho" (tiger) instead of 兔 "Do" (rabbit). As a result the sleek, powerful, tiger came down the mountain inspiring mortal fear in the turtle. Ah, found the video with English subs is still up:
이날치(LEENALCHI) - 범 내려온다(Tiger is coming) Kor-Eng sub
I was looking for an explanation of the original myth, which I had read once or twice before in a book of Korean myths among the books I had lost in a flood despite my best efforts to save them. A family member gifted me a series of Korean and Chinese myth collections (readers for language learners) upon hearing this. This tiger myth below in one of the books I thought was apropos.
The story goes a rabbit is confronted by a hungry tiger. The "clever rabbit" proposes to bake a tteok (sweet rice) cake for the tiger and that the tiger should eat him after that. The tiger agrees. The rabbit heats a white stone over a fire, representing it as the sweet treat. The tiger attempts to consume the "cake" burning his mouth badly and writhes in pain unable to eat anything more.
Your tiger looks familiar SP, that is, I thought maybe I had seen it once before in your pics.
The unrelated fables seem to hold a message for someone. Did someone call the tiger down on himself? Or has a tiger being "twicked" by a rabbit once more?
Thanks for the beautiful animal pics SP!

Hi, soryang
Love the Leenalche tune (it's on my Spotify playlist). Interesting that Korea would have a myth about tigers since to my knowledge there are no tigers in Korea.
I have posted other tiger photos in the past. The one I posted this week I shot on March 2nd this year.
Here's a live sound stage version of Tiger is coming I really like.

Yes that's a good one
She said something about the tiger coming down from the mountain, when someone cooked chicken and carp soup (attracted by the smell).
I've read accounts of the demise of the Siberian tiger on the Korean peninsula before, this recent account is a wonderful glimpse into that history. It has gotten remarkably few views but it's outstanding! The subs are pretty good except for "sable" when they mean lynx. I really enjoyed this.
ENG SUB] The Forgotten Tigers Of Korea And The Tragedy Of Their Extinction
They were hunted down to extinction during the Japanese colonial period. After they were wiped out, leopard and lynx would serve as the object of the hunt.

Tigers and leopards as well
Watching the documentary of the extinction of the Siberian tigers in South Korea reminded me of leopards that used to be there as well. Jo Yong Pil sang a very unconventional song about a Kilimanjaro leopard. While looking for the lyrics I came across this somewhat recent article about the songwriter and her composer husband and their work with the iconic South Korean singer superstar.

Hi Q!
Been away this afternoon working on my better half's mc plan options. It's a confusing mess. More corporate jiggery pokery. Luckily, we had two competent advisors. My brain is broken now.

Greetings from the land of Endless Summer--BAH HUMBUG!
Love the pics, comments, and links. This and NCTim's Diaries (plus Professor Joe's) are what attracted me to c99 initially. Now, I'm pretty much a Regular. LOL.
