The war news this morning features the Whiner in Chief threatening to huff and puff and blow the lights out in Iran. The goofy Iranians refuse to follow the script and insist on fucking with the world economy, rather than laying down and dying as President Trump wants them to.
Now they’ve really gone and done it! They made the whiner in chief whine yet again. How dare they!

-- it's not over because, among other reasons, the Trump administration has destroyed all basis for negotiation. Trump's successors will have to declare for themselves the unconditional surrender Trump demanded from Iran.
Compare and contrast with what is going on in Ukraine right now. Ukraine had a whole bunch of armies. They're down to their last one. All the US has left now, however, is bombing. The concept of war being applied in both instances, however, is the boiling frog syndrome -- the idea is that a slow dismantling of military might in both instances will eventually "boil the US Empire frog," as it were.
In the Operation Epstein Fury instance, however, the US/ Israel has chosen to accelerate the boiling process dramatically in hopes that it will jump out of the pot. But it cannot jump out of the pot, however, at least not yet. Note the ridiculous measures taken by the Trump administration in hopes of saving things for itself. Sanctions on Russian oil have been temporarily lifted. They are now trying to extort trillions from the Gulf states as -- that's right -- protection money.

In that Iran was at one of it's weakest points, Russia busy elsewhere etc. But to what end?
So far I see no achievable goals. The leadership was easily replaceable. Not easy to have a popular uprising against a govt that is more than willing to shoot. And there is a very large military whose only job is to keep the population in line. Where as most of our warmongers can't imagine beyond a year, Trump couldn't imagine beyond a week.
If the country turned into multi party democracy overnight they have still been bombed to smithereens and it will take a lot to rebuild.

Refreshingly clear, stating the obvious, he tends to make sense consistently, which shouldn't be difficult. But our politicians go to such lengths to dissuade, to evade, to talk in parables that don't make sense, that's it's always refreshing to hear someone say something obvious. We're so used to hearing lies, we're surprised when we hear the simple truth.

I started this thread because it seemed to me that Trump is trying to bluff his way out of this absurd pickle he and his "advisors" have put the world in. The Iranians seem to be ready to call Trump's bluff, no matter how many chips he puts on the table.
Why isn't it over already? Trump and his numbskull cabinet members keep crowing over how they have already succeeded in breaking the ability of Iran to make trouble -- yet Iran continues to make trouble for Trump. So it is not over and Trump and his supporters are just shameless liars. That is why the war continues for no rational reason.
Somebody has to back down, or global chaos comes next.

So the answer to your initial question must come in 2 parts: either we'll be paying for it, also in perpetuity, or the cockroaches (who will eventually crawl out from under the fused silica glass that remains of our cities after the nuclear exchange) will.
As to "how long do we let them get away with this?", I suppose that the only answer is "as long as it takes". I do not see any change in course without violence, to a greater or lesser extent; and I abhor violence. Voting, unfortunately, doesn't seem to put a dent in it.

Well, the way I see it,
the initial prompt radiation will produce massive death among our existing cockroaches. However, some will survive, and the longer-lasting isotopes such as 137Cs, 241Am, 90Sr, and so on will increase the rate of mutations among the survivors for the first thousand years or so. So I'd say 1-5 million years or so for the surviving, mutated cockroaches to develop written language, then city and regional government, and only then find out the bill we ran up is still due. Perhaps then their historian-cockroaches will take it upon themselves to educate our desiccated skeletal remains on the topic. Depending on the breaks, of course.
But that probably wasn't the answer you were looking for. (;-)
All kidding aside: if the current situation hasn't done it yet, then it will clearly take a great dying, massive financial collapse, or perhaps ballistic planetary depopulation to pry the limited attention possessed by Joe and Mary Sixpack away from the teevee for long enough for them to realize that the water has indeed begun to boil. If the current state of affairs hasn't proven to be enough, then I honestly do not know what will, or whether that is even possible.

This is exactly right. We can't get there without a complete Cultural Revolution. As a society, our instincts and sense of morality have become utterly depraved. The US shocks the world with its violence and injustice. Usians are lost. Their brains are damaged by lies and propaganda.
Cultural Revolutions are really tough to go through. But the alternative is even more bleak.

As far as getting off petroleum/coal, you can bet I'm 100% behind it. Ny younger sis already has solar power. I would, too, 'cept for my age. My house is small, has been totally renovated for cheaper energy, and is debt-free. Its value is the land, not the building. As far as being alive goes, the last 24 years have been 50-50, bittersweet for me. If thermonuclear war breaks out, my location will be a prime target as I live in the Space Coast region of the country.
