02/02 Open Thread - World Wetlands Day

```
Elkhorn Slough designated "Wetland of International Importance"
```

~~ Elkhorn Slough

February 2 is World Wetlands Day, marking the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat on February 2, 1971. The convention was all about conservation and sustainable use of so called "Ramsar sites" or, more simply "wetlands". Wetlands day was established to raise awareness about the value of wetlands for humanity and the planet.

Wetlands play an important role in earths ecology, filtering water, providing coastal and riparian floodplains and flood mitigation zones, fish, mammal, amphibian, bird, plant and other habitats and nurseries and more. Something my cursory look into Wetlands Day did not turn up was any reference to mangroves which are a very important and integral part of many coastal wetlands, providing all of the other wetlands habitat benefits plus ad added layer of erosion, storm surge and tsunami protection and control. As a fan of and frequent visitor to wetlands of all types, I feel conpelled to toss in a plug for the Mangrove Action Project; https://mangroveactionproject.org/

The Picture above is of Elkhorn Slough, one of 2,531 wetlands recognized as being of international importance. If you ever get out to California's Monterey Bay, you'll find the estuary at Moss Landing, 19 miles north of the town of Monterey. There are aquatic tours of the wetlands there and, as of this writing, it's also a good place to watch endangered southern sea otters (enhydra lutris lutris).

According to da wiki;

Elkhorn Slough is a 7-mile-long (11 km)[2][3] tidal slough and estuary on Monterey Bay in Monterey County, California. It is California's second largest estuary and the United States' first estuarine sanctuary.[4] The community of Moss Landing and the Moss Landing Power Plant are located at the mouth of the slough on the bay. The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and Elkhorn Slough State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) are in the area.

Elkhorn Slough harbors the largest tract of tidal salt marsh in California outside the San Francisco Bay and provides much-needed habitat for hundreds of species of plants and animals, including more than 340 species of birds. It has been designated as a protected Ramsar site since 2018 >BR?

Naked Capitalism today features this piece:

Iran War? A Look at Boundary Conditions Says Trump Will TACO With Intent to Strike Later; Israel Terrorism Set to Continue

Some observations about this piece:

1) And most importantly -- the main observation of this piece appears to be that the people who are really in charge of US foreign policy would like to have a full-scale war against Iran but, you know, consequences. And then there's this "the window of opportunity may have already closed" metaphor:

The most likely course is for some sort of sham negotiations to allow the US to climb down for now and for Trump to depict the mere fact of talks as a win and a proof of US domination. But don’t expect the US to relent. But as Greg Stoker pointed out, the Israeli minister of defense was in Washington last week to hand over the strike packages. Israel has not given up on Project Iran. The hawks most assuredly have not.

But it may turn out that the window for Israel and the US to subdue Iran has passed, permanently. The US is not what it once was, militarily, while Iran has survived the US attacks and is getting more help from Russia and even China.

But what about the window of opportunity for the US to strike Iran, causing blowback that destroys the US economy and Israel's infrastructure? Maybe this attack Iran thing is a mere suicide mission? The pattern seems to be: destroy America, blame the woke people. On the other hand, a suicide mission might put an end to their valuable pleasure time killing people in Minnesota, Syria, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and southern Lebanon.

2) Rumor floats on Facebook that the DoJ released some more Epstein files because they are controlled by Mossad, and because the ruling class in Israel, controllers of Mossad, are pissed that there's no war yet in Iran. "Start the damn war or we will release more files." Is there any truth to any of this? And why did they release more files, anyway?

3) The nice liberals with big egos, self-proclaimed saviors of planet Earth, should be watched carefully this week. Have they given up on flying the banners of true liberation by which they, and they alone, can free the struggling masses of Ukraine and Iran from those evil oppressors Putin and Khamenei? And have they stopped celebrating Trump's win over that ostensibly evil dictator Nicolas Maduro? Or have they recognized yet that all of their sales pitches amount to "Omigod capitalist on capitalist violence -- ya gotta get involved!"?

opportunity and such rests on a very tenuous premise. Cost-benefit analysis is all well and good except that that both the costs and benefits are projected values and outcomes. In the US, the underlying data upon which such projections are based invariably includes a large dose of propaganda, mythology and other ideological content that does not map very well on reality.

I don't have any way to quantify or even estimate the accuracy of facebook info, but one reason why they might have released more files is the fact that they are required by law to do so and to have, in fact, already done so. This latest release very likely allows them to allege full compliance regardless of whether it is all of them or not.

Cassiodorus's picture

@enhydra lutris But one should be able to trace any cost-benefit analysis (for instance, the ones being generated by the US about the costs and benefits of attacking Iran) back to an insane actor (for instance, Mileikowski) who wants the action to happen.

As regards the Epstein files, it would be quite a surprise if it were revealed that the peoples in question actually felt themselves constrained by any law.

You'd be surprised at how well old houses hold up to quakes, at least old school wood frame types. The 2 by framed units are flexible and able to give so they just do some hula-hula and develop cracks in the plaster, stucco, sheetrock and such but maintain integrity at the framing level. Ours was built in '52 and made it this far up here in shake city.

And so are mangroves. All FL is is a sandbar peninsula. We actually have healthy enviro grassroots groups. They sprang up as opposition to the out-of-control corruption of the real estate and construction industries. It's been a Battle Royale, and you have to know where to go to get accurate news reports on them. Grassroots enviros have helped save the manatees, protect mangroves, save a lot of the seashore critters, including sea turtles. Worldwide climate change crisis has really added fuel to the fire. sent out an email blast to all employees this morning, with an attached PDF stating the company's new policy towards the use of AI, and a requirement that it be printed, signed, and returned to HR by the close of business Wednesday. Period.

Interesting. It basically bans all use of generative AI, and specifically prohibits the upload of any corporate intellectual property whatsoever to any LLM that might decide to just keep it, like using it for training. Which they all do.

About time. I wonder who fucked up badly enough to make them get off the dime about this exposure? Now, I'm just waiting for them to realize that Microsoft Copilot is always slurping up everything that you do, in any case. That'll make their eyes roll right back in their heads.

I signed mine, because I will never voluntarily use AI for anything- not even for cleaning the cheese out from under my toenails. Ahh, the joys of having sold my soul to them for a few pieces of silver...

...and the associated wetlands.

I frequented the wetlands on the south shore of LI as child. I didn't know anything about the environment, I just loved being there. Unfortunately, a lot of them were filled in by land developers. They were also subject to pollution.

When I moved to Florida, I loved being in Jacksonville, because of the extensive waterways and wetlands. I bought a small outboard, and went to the wetlands to fish virtually every chance I got. I followed this pattern more or less all of my adult life. It didn't matter if I didn't catch a single fish, I loved seeing the wildlife, and spending time in such beautiful places. In and around the St. John's River, Nassau River, and the Intercoastal. At one time or another I explored the wetlands on the coast from Fernandina to New Smyrna Beach. I spent a fair amount of time in the wetlands in and around Clearwater on the other coast.

When I think about it, I always felt free and at home while I was in those settings. I still live near the coast but don't get out as often. I'll have to make a point of getting over near the intercoastal waterway soon.

Thanks for the OT EL!
